  1. Whether Japan would have invaded Australia is debatable (and has been debated). I also can't see them invading the coast of the U S A, they simply didn't have the manpower to take the country. What IS more possible is that they would have turned West with India as the glittering prize. Possibly the U S A could have been forced to negotiate with the Axis powers had Germany got the bomb first and Japan could have kept its Asian possessions while Germany controlled Europe and Africa, leading to a cold war between a Germanic Europe and a Japanese dominated Asia, with the Americas as a neutral (and Neutered) "third power" and trading partner for the two great powers.

I can't decide if Trump is genuinely cunning and sinister, or just oblivious to the implications of what he says and does. I mean, there's much evidence that he's not the genius he claims, but could a man who's lived so long and seen so much really be that thick?

It is a conundrum. But then again, if Trump IS that thick, how much thicker are the people who believe his lies ?

Has Trump had ANY successes at International Affairs? I'm trying not to let my scorn for the man blind me, but I don't see it. He has  offended our best allies, fractured organizations that help protect the free world,  affixed himself to Putin's tuckus via lips ignoring Russian cyberattacks that are this close to a cause for war, destroyed an Iranian deal that did like it might work while getting yanked around on a North Korea talk. He seems ready to throw a baby fit Mexico won't pay for a wall, and if we had any good will in Central America his separation of family units has dumped all over that.

Has he had ANY successes at International affairs, barring tawdry bedroom jokes?

I think that Trump's affairs have all been with Americans, but his wife is foreign born.

  4. Sorry, double post. Many dictators and would be dictators have loved people having big rallies and having them chanting their name. I expect Trump to go in for gaudy neomilitary uniforms next. I am sure he will  if he is reelected rather than impeached, try to change your constitution to make himself "President For Life"or Grand High Exalted Poobar or something.

Croatia through on penalties. Denmark are out.

Sweden better not let it get this far. It is unfair to L Marcus. But he has two days to wait.

Danb ! Oh well I still have England and Belgium to barrack for.

  6. I found Ellison's work to be a bit hit and miss. Some of his best regarded stories left me a but underwhelmed, while I like some of his less well known stuff. He DID have a tendency to shoot his mouth off before engaging his brain however (if some of the remarks I have seen credited to him are correct)..

Marked Cards edited by George R R Martin. The second of the Card Sharks trilogy, the characters from the first book are still at work but now Gregg Hartman is trying to stop them. Unfortunately certain people want more than bringing the Sharks into the light. They want blood. Features the return of the Jumpers.

You are further along with "Wild Cards" than I am. Last one I read was "Dealer's Choice", the last piece of The Rox Triad.

South-east Queensland is good in summer. Brisbane is humid, but doesn't usually reach the horrible temperatures Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Adelaide get.

Toowoomba, where I am, is usually a couple of degrees cooler than Brisbane, and far less humid. Unfortunately it sucks in winter. (No snow though, obviously.)

I bow to your superior knowledge. I haven't been to Queensland in some years and was simply thinking that the area above the tropics would be hot in summer.

Yup, we're done.  Only question is whether to wait and see how things shake out in November, or if I should start looking into moving now.  Any suggestions for countries with decent weather and healthcare?

Well I could suggest Australia to you. We have basic health care (paid for by a levy on our taxes) and you can always get private cover if you wish to pay for it. Most of the country has pretty good weather (it CAN get hot in summer, especially in Queensland and the "top end). You might have to get used to our sports however, we don't really have much Ice Hockey (although we are pretty good at field hockey) and our main forms of football are rather different to American Football, but we would welcome almost any migrants from the U S A.

  10. I recently got "The Blood And Thunder Guide To Pulp Fiction" by Ed Hulse. It seems to be geared towards the collector but has some useful appendices with a list of  "Notable Books About The Pulps",, "Small Press Publications Specialising In Pulp Reprints", and "Must Have Anthologies Of Pulp Fiction" (Murania press. 2013).

For hackneyed action movie scenes you hate.  Feel free to delve into other genres if you wish.  :)

I nominate - Desperate protagonist without gun knocks out mook with gun then...DOESN'T PICK UP GUN!

I have to agree with this one. You would think that the hero would at least dispose of the guns ammunition, just in case the mook regains conciousness and the hero needs to come back past him .
