  1. Re: Game of Thrones They're also based (quite loosely) on historical events. Perhaps more precisely, inspired by a historical milieu. I don't know how closely it follows it, because I don't know that particular era very well. History gives us some of the most depressing stories ever -- just see everyone who fought Edward I. Admittedly, I'm biased against him because of various historical novels I've read, but hey, the history is biased enough that any claim to know the motivations of people in that era are based more on bias than fact. ^_-
  2. Re: Growth: Height Only? Or dont' buy any power for the height, since all you're getting is the disadvantages. It's a physical limitation, not the power. Then you buy extra speed, and stretching for being able to kick people quite some distance away. Or buy that as a ranged attack instead of hand-to-hand if that's cheaper.

  4. Re: Order of the Stick Yeah. I think much more he's showing how alignment isn't a straitjacket. It's not 'nine personality types' -- it's general ordering of behaviour, but doesn't dictate actions or personality. Celia and Haley are probably both chaotic good, but you couldn't have two more different reactions to various things, including Belkar's casual killing.
  5. Re: Order of the Stick The original phrase is 'hang a lantern', it seems to have become 'hang a lampshade' in recent years. It has an entry on tv tropes, if you want a full explanation: short version: (From tv tropes):
  6. Re: "Matrix" Sentinel build? Probably have to be a form of possession, iwth major physical transform attached... perhaps even a mental and physical transform. the transform is bought to fade at a slow rate, but to end instantly when a) target dies, or the power is used on anyone else. All Agent Smith did is spend XP to buy off the limitations. ^_- (At least, I never saw any of his bodies turn back into people, though we may simply not have seen any of them die.)
  7. Re: Order of the Stick Just don't y'all forget about Dave Arneson in the meantime. ^_- Gygax might have had a LONGER relationship with D&D, and all props to the guy for what he did, but he wasn't the sole creator; the game didn't spring fully formed from his forehead.
  8. Re: Order of the Stick It's weird, the first I heard about Gygax's death was this comic! Made it really eerie.
  9. Re: What gives the "rightful" king the right?
  10. Re: What gives the "rightful" king the right? A summary of the show can be found here. It's a fun theory, at any rate. =)
  11. Re: What gives the "rightful" king the right? It works for the first Targaryens, no reason it can't again.
  12. Re: What gives the "rightful" king the right? There are still doubts about the English Monarchy's legitimacy, based on Henry VII's highly-questionable claim to the throne. According to certain research, the true British royals are currently living in outback Australia.
  13. Re: What gives the "rightful" king the right? I call arms dealer!
  14. Re: ST: How Not To Do Homages (Trivia) I guess two possibilities. Either the Vulcans had given up space tech, and humans reintroduced it to them, or it was before the Romulan connection had been established. ^_-
  15. Re: How to make an ice planet plausible Also keep in mind that the OP isn't trying to justify Hoth, in the SW Universe... he used it as an example of an ice planet, but I don't think he's asking exclusively about that one single example. =)
  16. Re: Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow Personally, I liked Gwynneth Paltrow -- she wasn't meant to be intensely likeable, but she was fun to watch. The film also wasn't 'on her side', with the amount she messed up (including one of the funniest moments, when she takes a picture of the log when she falls). Angeline Jolie was indeed amazing, but I think she was used just the right amount of time; every single moment she had on the screen was amazing. Any more time and she'd have had dull moments, which would have reduced her presence. I'm glad they resisted the urge to use her more!
  17. Re: Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow I like Death's Head, myself, for a bit of a poetic turn. =)
  18. Re: Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow 'Around the same time' being 'over a year apart'. ^_- I loved the film, myself. The pacing/editing was a little odd at times, but I thought it did manage to contribute to the weird flavour of the film. I'm not too familiar with pulp, myself, so I had no preconceptions it had to live up to. I liked the stuff it had, and the oddball nature, and how it kept entirely consistent to its tone, without dropping the mask once.
  19. Re: Order of the Stick It's rulesy, so be prepared. Expect to spend the first game going 'huh? What do I do here?" Refer to the 'quick-start' rules a lot (wherein Belkar makes a joke about the quick-start rules being 16 pages long). Have friends who like to backstab. XD It's fun! Can definitely see the Talisman influence.
  20. Re: Cool Guns for your Games Nice gun, but god, that reminded me how much I hate Futureweapons, and all of this new wave of documentary presenters who seem to have gotten their acting classes from porn movies.
  21. Re: Deep Medieval RPGing Abandonia ftw.
  22. Re: Block vs Dodge So martial block beats martial dodge when fighting a single opponent of higher skill than you. Cool. Or, yes, if you have OCV levels in whatever you're using.
