What's the latest on this?  I'm about to play my first online Hero game, and would love to know if I should do this or Roll20.

As mentioned above there is an unofficial Hero Module for Foundry. Works pretty good. I would recommend it before Roll20, but then again, I only tried the Roll20 one once and it was an early version, but I didn't like it as much as the Foundry one. YMMV.

I'll try out a couple of combat encounters using it and see how everyone fares with it then! My worry is that some of the group are new to Hero (and TTRPGs in general), and without the automation found in a more developed Foundry system, may struggle.

    Guess we'll find out. Thanks!

YMMV, but my son's group used the aforementioned module for the first time and for their very first playtest of Hero, and found it helpful and easy to use.

I'm so freaking excited...  Are you willing to comment on how the first basic objective will compare with the Roll20 script?

For info, we rely on 2 aspects at roll20 in our game group:  Combat turn tracker and the Power "attack buttons" which draw from character sheet modifiers.

On the latter, for Hero Vets and Newbies alike, it keeps everyone in the flow instead of pausing all the time to do math. The secret to a great Hero System module in my eyes is making OCV/DCV modifiers easy and intuitive for players to manipulate.  The guy who designed the Roll20 script and character sheet did a decent job of it.

And no joke, the Roll20 script has been VITAL for letting me bring in players who are new to Hero System.  As GM i say "Let them play first, learn later."  With the roll20 scripts, takes me 5 minutes to teach how to click the modifier option buttons and how to pick an attack on their powers page which I've prepared before hand - then we're gaming.  They pick up the math and logic along the way.  If your new FoundryVTT module meets or exceeds in this area of making it less daunting for newbies, then we could see some growth in the number Hero System gamers.

I can tell you that I introduced my son's entire gaming group to Hero using an earlier iteration of this, and they were able to start using it on their own after only a couple sessions to learn the mechanics, so I'm sure with the newer version it should meet your needs given that they had only ever played D&D.

The full version will allow you to import a Hero Designer export file

During our playtesting of the module one thing that we kept wishing for was that it would bring in the character portrait as portrait in Foundry. Is that something that you add by any chance? I'm thinking probably not since it is a separate file, but it would be awesome if he can pull it just like when you run an Export from HD.

I have a telekinetic character and he is one of the most versatile characters on the team.  This character is a 3-trick pony.

Would you mind sharing your character? I understand if you don't want to, but it might be good for my son's friend to see what a well-designed telekinetic looks like in Hero. Actually, the whole group would probably benefit from it. I've shared a few myself, but seeing one from someone unaffiliated with the group might show less bias and get through to them.

Initially, I wasn’t impressed. But as I read through it a couple of times, it feels like the player has a definite concept in mind. Yes, there are some over-lapping powers. But if the character is “wasting” some points to bring an idea to life, then .. I am all for it!

Personally, I like that the player is thinking about powers that help teammates. I also like that they are putting points into a PK skill.

Using ‘Unified Power’ on everything makes damaging the focus a bigger problem (6E p381) and makes all the powers more susceptible to Drain and Suppress (6E p397). However, this may make sense considering the character concept.

Three Dependents and a Hunted seem a bit much. One or two, or even all three familiy members, are likely to appear every game session. And if every player has an Infrequent Hunted, then nearly every game session would be devoted to someone’s hunter. Unless they all are hunted by CORP.

What’s the OIF on PK Burst and PK Missile?

Yeah, he definitely has an idea in mind for the character.

The problem, for me at least, is that I think he's trying to do too much to help the team.

Yup. The Unified Power susceptibility was pointed out a couple times to him.

Whoa! I hadn't seen the OIF when I was initially looking at it. Good catch! My guess is that that is objects that may be around that the character grabs and throws at the target.

I do not think you can give things in a multipower unified power, since the multipower already has that as a part of its build and structure to begin with.

Also I would never, ever allow someone to have a 167-point power (which is what the multipower is)

And yeah it looks like a mix of 5th and 6th, unless its just the format being used for the print out.

Along with others, I recommend pulling several of those powers out of the Multipower and having them stand alone, and simplifying the list because there's a lot of stuff you'll never use or will very rarely use.  This feels like a character with 5 years experience, not a starting character.  This is one of my complaints with giving players 400 points to build a character with.

I was thinking the same thing, but adding Unified Power isn't "illegal" per the book. It actually states that you can use it in an MP. But the sense is that you shouldn't unless you have a solid reason to do so.

I'm in agreement with you on the power. Initially the player created it as three separate MPs (offense, defense, and movement), and then after some of the issues were pointed out, he changed it to one giant MP and added all the points together.

It is just the format. Ignore the format. The format is a lie. ;)

Also agree on the overall size and especially the point of it looking like an experienced character. And that's why my son dropped it to 350 points. Maybe he needs to drop it farther.

Looks like a mixture of 5e and 6e. Is that intentional?

Are you referring to "Disadvantages" as the title rather than "Complications"? That's just because of the Export Format that I happened to use. The character, as far as I know was all built in with a 6e template. The points were reduced to 350 and 65 because my son wanted to have a slightly lower powered group.

  9. This isn't my character, this is a character created by someone in my son's gaming group. They are just getting started with Champions and are creating their first characters. I feel there are some real problems with this character, but I want to get your far more experienced opinion of the character. And feel free to not hold back on the problems you see. I want to try to make sure the player doesn't end up ruining the experience for themselves or for others at the table.

  10. We had our second session yesterday. They are sold on Hero and will be giving it a more thorough run now. They were extremely impressed by all the stuff they could do. A big surprise came when I asked Squirrel Girl to make a Smell PER roll, and they were amazed that was a thing. LOL

One important take away was that if you aren't using a VTT that fully supports Hero you are going to waste a great deal of time. I'm hopeful that the developer for the Foundry Hero Module will be able to get it working 100%. Other than that one, I think the only options are Roll20 and MapTool. Never played with Roll20 so not sure how integrated it is. Used MapTool a bunch, but admittedly it can be difficult for me users to get up to speed with it.

I should have looked closer, but I assumed there's be no character sheet for Squirrel Girl, because she's a joke character with enough plot armor to wrap a battleship. But that sheet is actually a pretty good template for a starting superhero.

Yup. It worked well. I'm in the process of recreating the HDC file though because the one on Surbrook is corrupted and won't load. Ran into a weird talent though: "7pts. Beast Speech: Only Squirrels (-1)" No clue what that talent is supposed to be. I thought maybe Universal Translator, but the points don't work and the talent doesn't have a roll. Any ideas?

  12. The game went well! Unfortunately, we lost about 2 hours trying to get Foundry to cooperate and get things set up, but they enjoyed the game, and were pleasantly surprised by how flexible Hero was compared to D&D, and they were able to do stuff without having to come up with crazy house rules and such. We are going to finish next Saturday, so I have a week to try to get Foundry to work better - if I can. Just wanted to give all of you a huge THANK YOU! for the scenario and character recommendations and such. It really helped a lot.
