Christopher R Taylor reacted to zslane in Agents Of SHIELD!
2010: The Year We Make Contact showed a moon being consumed by black monoliths and, ultimately, being turned into a second sun. 25 years and countless sci-fi movies and tv shows later and audiences can't be counted on to grasp the concept (and image of) a huge, inscrutable alien in armor, consuming a planet with massive alien technology? That's not just a tragic failure of faith in audiences, that's a profound failure of creative vision on the filmmakers' part.
But I guess Marvel hadn't yet shown the way when the FF films were made...

So Superman's storyline potential is nothing. The character has lasted 75 years thanks to the 'limited' potential of a feisty, investigative reporter who is also an on-and-off girlfriend.
I typed all that just so I could play it back in my head.
I'm not trying to be insulting...I'm just trying to comprehend the ability to actually think that while actually being a fan of the comic book genre. Please explain. For example, are you referring to the possibility that there just aren't any NEW interesting Superman stories to tell?

Renegade, a team brick. He's pretty simple and straight forward a character, although the build has 100 endurance, and he only has basic abilities that use any END (strength and movement) so I'm not sure what on earth they did it for. He's a superhero in the tradition of his dad, Captain Thunder who died passing on his powers to Renegade. Framed for murder, the Protectors took him in and gave him a new identity. His sheet doesn't list it but all the other members had flash defense in their contacts, so I added it to him as well.

And finally, Silverfist. Permanently trapped in a suit of alien design, he went from boxing champ to freak who can't stand people mocking him. This is one of my favorite character concept designs: the melee based energy projector. Not really a martial artist (although he has boxing), but a damage guy who fights hand-to-hand. He's built with 14- armor so when I did the coloring I wasn't 100% clear on if the armor covered him totally or just on his chest, head, hands, and feet.
Silverfist is my final Protectors build, and I'll either start doing Ninja Hero (if the copy I ordered shows up tomorrow) or maybe Kingdom of Chamipions. Tons of characters in that bad boy.

It's a shame because the character has all the same potential as Superman, in terms of storytelling, and the lead actress is an absolute gem. Those of us who were (rightfully) skeptical of CBS's vision for the show are watching that miscalcuation play itself out week by week. I don't put the entire blame on the writers because they are merely following a show bible that was conceptually flawed to begin with. It takes a degree of brilliance not generally found in Hollywood to take a flawed concept and make the writing transcend it. So I can't really fault the writing team for being unable to dig themselves out of an impossible situation like this.
For me the biggest issues are 1) tone, and 2) overly liberal use of the dumb stick. The first one forms the foundation for the show, and being stuck with a light, romcom tone doomed the show from the start, IMO. The second one is entirely the fault of the showrunner and the head writer (if they aren't already the same person) who is responsible for quality control of the storytelling and the dialogue. Most showrunners are overworked and given more responsibility than they can handle, which is why that role isn't for the faint of heart or the unequivocally brilliant.
I guess I've been spoiled by Agent Carter. That show sets the bar for what I expect, at the very minimum, from any non-grimdark series with a female action hero at its center.

I don't mind there being a really dark, grim, gritty superhero show or two, I just want them to be appropriate (i.e. Daredevil, not Superman) and I want them to be the exception. Variety and appropriate storytelling is the key, not one monolithic system.

Christopher R Taylor reacted to Andrew_A in Supergirl
Just to bring the thread back on topic (sort of), this is why I find Superman more relatable than Spider-Man. Both Superman and Spider-Man understand that "with great power comes great responsibility," but Pete acted, a lot of the time, like being Spider-Man and doing the right thing was a burdensome duty. Superman always accepted responsibility as a given, a sacred trust, and a privilege. He did the right thing for the most believable reason of all, because it was the right thing, same as any cop, fire fighter, or paramedic.

Christopher R Taylor reacted to bigbywolfe in Supergirl
Bringing up the super strength orgasm is just dumb at this point. That's not how it works in the comics, that's not how it has worked in any previous DC property movies or TV shows, and there is absolutely no reason to try to apply some stupid "real physics" to superhuman mating. It's a non-issue and acting like it is, or worse, like it should be, is just looking for something to complain about.
EDIT: having super sex be an issue in supergirl would be extremely off genre. She can hold a building up by one corner and it doesn't collapse but it's sex and no other misuse of super strength that breaks your suspension of disbelief? Seriously?

And that was when I paused the show and then clicked the close tab button. I will not be viewing this show anymore.
Seriously, the prize winning journalist who has apparently kept Clark's secret for so long just slips up like that?
The obvious love triangle being formed is passe at best. And worse yet, it is happening in half the time I predicted before. Does that make me an optimist or this show just that terrible?
Anyway, maybe in a year or so when this whole season is done I will pick back up from episode three, but I am not confident. Especially if this show doesn't even manage to get a second season.

This is mostly just a copout. The same copout that says just because a fantasy world has magic, there need be no internal logic to the world or magic itself. Which is utter nonsense. You are right, we can't analyse superspeed scientifically. However, the show wants to allow Barry to take advantage of a real physical phenomenon (terminal velocity) while simultaneously ignoring any real physical phenomenon that gets in the way of the plot or action scene. As a viewer, I don't allow writers to get that lazy without criticism.

And now, Nighthawk Nightwind, a sort of obvious Nightwing variant at least in appearance. By day, a martial arts instructor, by night, he fights to clean up the campaign city's Chinatown. He has a strange build on his weapons, its a sort of power pool of martial arts weapons, built as a KA with ranged and a variable special effect floating advantage, representing various weapons he takes on a patrol around town, but only one at a time. The damage is limited to the weapon, so a sword can do full damage but shuriken cannot. He also has kind of an iron fist ability to punch in a variety of sometimes extraordinary ways.
I broke my rule a bit and gave him a PS: Martial Arts instructor so he's at least fairly good at his day job.

The final bad guy for Champions Presents, the mad scientist "Master of Time." He has some really nasty abilities, like the power to send someone forward in time 1 minute - effectively out of combat completely. He can use it on himself as well, basically disappearing when things are going badly and showing up when everyone is off guard. But he's not much of a combatant despite being able to speed up time around himself and become insanely fast.
