Well, in my view Joss's songs were head and shoulders above the Flash songs. They were more clever (lyrically), more stylistically varied, and far more deeply integrated into the ongoing storyline of the show. There were also a whole lot more of them; an entire CD's worth, in fact.
 
Of the Buffy cast, at least half of those asked to sing had genuine singing talent. Nevertheless, the use of the non-singers among them made the episode feel more authentic, especially given that the events were actually happening to the characters; it was not just some dream sequence.
 
Once More, With Feeling remains the gold standard for "musical episodes", IMO. In fact, I watched it again last night after watching the Flash episode, just to see if it held up after more than 15 years, and it still does. Superbly.

If that was a "Musical Episode", then standards for musical episodes have really dropped precipitously over the years. The ratio of singing/dancing to spoken dialogue was about 10%/90%, unlike Once More, With Feeling which was the other way around. And this Flash episode didn't do much to advance plot or character development beyond helping two couples patch things up. Very disappointing.

I know Marvel wants to establish each Netflix series as the rookie season of each hero, showing us how they become the character we recognize from the comics, but it should be different for Danny. He spent 15 years becoming (and earning the title of) the Immortal Iron Fist before the show even begins. He should not be fighting like Daredevil in season one. He should already be an unstoppable fighting force, regardless of the fact that this is only the show's first season.

I know how you feel sinanju, I too am frustrated by the generally low quality of writing for nearly all superhero shows. The prevailing wisdom in Hollywood seems to be that the audience for these shows isn't discerning enough to notice or care, so why should they spend the money on finding good writers? It may even be true for the most part; after all, we here in these forums are a tiny, tiny minority, and spending money to raise the level of writing to impress us simply doesn't make any economic sense.
 
At least Supergirl has writing that isn't atrocious (unlike the other CW superhero shows), a terrific cast (especially its lead actress), and a generally cheerful and optimistic outlook.

I imagine it will be like all the times Thor was relieved of Mjolnir for plot purposes in the comics; it will be a very temporary and short-lived situation.

And yet this show still beats the snot out of everything on the CW, except for maybe Supergirl, which doesn't get pwned only by virtue of being so charming and cheerful (and, of course, having Melissa Benoist).

Dr. Doom, Galactus, Magneto, Ultron, the Sentinals, Doc Oc, the Kree, Dormammu, ..., I could go on. For me the Marvel villains are far more interesting than the DC villains.

I think the Chris Evans/Steve Rogers version of Capt. America will be retired in Phase 3. Whether that means he dies or not remains to be seen. But it is known that Chris Evans' contract expires after Phase 3, and that Sebastien Stan's contract is for something like 9 films total. Hence, speculation is that if there's to be a Capt. America in Phase 4 at all, it is the Winter Soldier (Bucky) who will most likely transition into becoming him. This is all speculation, of course, but it's the theory that seems to best fit the facts we have so far.
 
Re: Namor - I'd love to see the Submariner in the MCU too, but I don't think there'll be any movement towards that unless DC hits it really big with Momoa's Aquaman and Marvel suddenly feels the desperate need to compete in that space. Still, I really wish Marvel would pry the FF rights out of Fox's lukewarm hands post-haste.
