Oh, I'm being followed by a moonshadow,
    Moonshadow, moonshadow
Leapin and hopping on a moonshadow,
    Moonshadow, moonshadow

And if I ever lose my hands,
lose my plough, lose my land,
Oh if I ever lose my hands,
Oh if... I won't have to work no more.

And if I ever lose my eyes,
if my colours all run dry,
Yes if I ever lose my eyes,
Oh if... I won't have to cry no more.

Yes  I'm being followed by a moonshadow,
    Moonshadow, moonshadow
Leapin and hopping on a moonshadow,
    Moonshadow, moonshadow

And if I ever lose my legs,
    I won't moan, and I won't beg,
Yes if I ever lose my legs,
Oh if... I won't have to walk no more.

And if I ever lose my mouth,
all my teeth, north and south,
Yes if I ever lose my mouth,
Oh if... I won't have to talk...

Did it take long to find me ?
    I asked the faithful light.
Did it take long to find me ?
And are you gonna stay the night ?

Alchemists and chirurgeons can, and do, transplant and merge parts of animals as well as people. Some chimerical beasts are useful, such as the elephant/camel/iguana hybrid, able to survive long periods of heat or cold without water, used to pull caravans across the barren Murdered Land. Some are more whimsical, such as the goat/chicken hybrid that lays cheese omelettes. Some are beasts of war or guarding, as ferocious as they are bizarre. And some of them just make people go "Wut?"

But these are not the fauna of Etterskell. First, there are many kinds of them, so they could not be a singular gift; and second, though they were made using her gifts, Etterskell did not make them, sanction their creation, or, in some cases, admit that They even heard of them.

Etterskell did give one special creature to the Chimney as Their special gift. They noticed that some people were not exactly ethical in how they obtained parts for transplantation. Well, Aziza, as God of Philosophy, had to explain why ikidnapping people to break them up for spare parts was unethical, but Etterskell eventually understood eventually. Nagus Sterling then explained people's motivation as an issue of supply and demand: More people wanting replacement limbs, organs, and bodies than people willing to donate.

So Etterskell created the Organ Tree. It's both flora and fauna, sort of: a short, rather squat tree that grows body parts. Left alone, the trees grow spare eyes (nestled within protective flowers), and humanoid arms suitable for humans, dwarves, elves, or satyrs. (Not sure about genii. Shape's right, but I'm not sure genii are made of conventional flesh and blood.) Inside the hollow trunk grow a selection of hearts, lungs, livers, kidneys, and other viscera. Alchemical treatment can prompt an organ tree to grow other spare parts, or parts for other species, sapient and otherwise. For instance, Etterskell made a special subdwarf variety just for Strangecharm's talking mice. The variety bred for wisps is actually quite common, but generally overlooked. Anyway, the tree does much to fulfill the demand for transplantation parts -- though not for entire, intact bodies.

Just don't be too picky about getting parts that match the appearance of the rest of your body.

Organ trees reproduce through their arms. The arms are easily pulled from the trunk and can then scuttle on their fingers for about half an hour, if they aren't promptly attached to a suitable body. An accidental error in Etterskell's design means that if an arm is left unattended, it crawls off to find a body and can attach itself without a chirurgeon's guidance. It is best to keep your organ tree fenced, or nearby people might wake up with a sudden extra arm grafted on just anywhere. Because ripe arms sometimes drop off of their own volition and go wandering.

If a free arm can't find a body, it works its shoulder into the ground. It eventually grows into a new tree. Praise be to Etterkell for Their generosity!

“The alchemist Doctor Valzain said you could help me,” Rhodri said. “I’ve never felt… right in my body. As a man. For years now, I’ve felt like I ought to be a woman. I asked Doctor Valzain in there was a potion that could change me. He said no — well, that he didn’t know of one — but you might do it through chirurgery. Is that possible? You could alter my body to make me a woman?”

“Mm, yes and no,” the chirurgeon said. “Modifying the body you have would be a long and rather complicated series of operations.” She steepled her fingers. “The more expeditious way might be to transfer your mind into a woman’s body. Easiest, of course, if I can find a woman who would like to occupy your body in return.” She looked back and forth quickly and said, a bit more loudly, “My practice uses only volunteers. Though,” her voice dropped lower, “The ease of finding a volunteer depends on how much you’re willing to pay.” Further discussion ensued.

As they rose to say goodbye, the chirurgeon added, “Also keep in mind that finding a transplant volunteer depends on how, er, picky you are about species. Does it matter to you to stay a dwarf?”

Gender dysphoria happens in the Sharded World — no surprise that in a world defined by breakage and imperfect repairs, selves and bodies don’t always match. But complete and final solutions are also possible through alchemical chirurgery.

Cultural attitudes to such transformations vary too widely to offer any generalization.

Some people also feel they are the wrong species: the human who wants to be a dwarf, the elf who wants to be a satyr, and so on. Or for more sinister purposes, the shade or K-rac C'ho C'o who wants to move among other folk completely unsuspected. Even stranger transferences are possible, as the widely told but possibly apocryphal story of the river that fell in love with the elf who bathed in it.

A few people, however, want truly extravagant changes to their bodies that follow no plan ordained by the Gods. They want four arms, or an animal’s head, fur and claws, or wings with which to fly. These dreams too are possible of fulfillment. And these are the folk of Etterskell. The God did not create them; they create themselves, and few are alike.

Some are beautiful. Some are horrible. Many are just plain weird. All they have in common is a strong will to change themselves. One does not embark on such metamorphoses lightly. It must be conceded, though, that a majority of them started as human.

    Sapient Race: The Chimerae

ADDENDUM: The Chimerae are a real pain in the butt for the crusaders who see Murder’s folk. The K-rac C'ho C'o don’t all look alike. If you encounter some strange-looking person, therefore, is it a Chimera — or is it one of Evil’s spawn that can spin a convincing story about their personal odyssey of body modification?

I was going to post Etterskell's Sentient Race tonight, but I suddenly realized what the Interference should be from the God of Parts and Wholes. It's a big one.

    Interference: Hypostases and Composit Deities.

Gods, too, are separable into parts. A god can separate part of itself as a lesser deity that expresses some aspect of its nature and power. The word for this in theology is a hypostasis. This doe not actually diminish the progenitor god; rather, it lets the god act in multiple places at once, focus on particular aspects without distraction, and perhaps hustle for worshipers who are interested in one aspect of the god but not others.

For instance, Etterskell spins of their aspect as inventor and patron of alchemy as the God Azoth. Alchemists prefer to deal with Azoth since they can ask for Azoth's aid with less risk of also attracting Etterskell's aspect of Accidents. (Though there is also the hypostasis Serendip, God of Fortunate Accidents.) Nagus Sterling can spin off hypostases for all the modes of making profit, from prospecting to loan-sharking. Crax can have subsidiary gods for all the methods and motives for murder, such as a God of Poison and a God of Killing in a Jealous Rage.

A concept for a hypostasis might fit under multiple deities. For instance, both Clarkent Kal and Ceass have an interest in Weapons. They could try to divvy up the concepts further, so the God of Heroes spins off a subsidiary God of Legendary Weapons while the God of Strife projects a God of Utilitarian Weapons. (And Crax covers Implements of Murder.) Or they can merge their hypostases in a composite deity, sharing in the prayers received. (Nagus Sterling can help you work out the contractual details, for a fee.)

As God of Parts and Wholes, Etterskell claims final authority over which hypostases and composite deities are possible. Not once, however, has the Master/Mistress of Multiplicity ever forbidden a hypostasis or a composite, seeming pleased merely at the multiplication of deities.

    Dean Shomshak

    (P. S.: The Egyptians were big on both hypostases and composite deities as, for instance, the Hellenistic god Serapis, a composite of the god Osiris and the divine bull Apis, who was in turn an aspect of the Nile-god Hapi. Also the creator-god Ptah to make a triad, though in an earlier form the death-god was Seker instead of Osiris, and hey, let's make Serapis solar like Ra. And the Mister Potato-Head approach to deity could get much more complicated than this. See below for an illustration of the god Bes mixed up with several other gods, including a little figure percheon his head. If it was good enough for the Egyptians, it should be good enough for us.)

Sorry, no flash fiction here. Let’s get to the point.

Because of the Big Oops, all things can be separated into parts and those parts can be reassembled into new wholes. That includes living creatures – and that goes far beyond chopping up plants and animals and reassembling them into dinner. (Though cooks seeking a new recipe might be prudent to send Etterskell a prayer.) Using alchemy, you can remove parts from one living creature and graft it, still living, to another living creature. Including between people.

Wild Card Secondary Domain/Gift to Civilization: Transplant Surgery

Through these arts, chirurgeons save many lives and make whole the maimed. Severed limbs can be replaced; the blind made to see; those doomed to death from organ damage receive a new chance at life. Praise be to Etterskell for the gift of fungible flesh!

The only limit to what can be transplanted is the skill of the chirurgeon and alchemist. Chirurgeons of great skill can transplant brains. Or minds. Or parts of minds. Such possibilities can, it must be granted, get a little oogy.

But most gods, and their folowers, have an interest in transplantation. Some possibilities:

Alitheon: The techniques of transplantation require great learning. Followers ofAlitheon may also seek to supply guidance in how, and why, these techniques are used.

    * Aziza: The ability to separate and recombine parts of minds, of selves, raises interesting questions about the nature of identity for Aziza’s philosophers to ponder.

    * Ceass: Those who struggle can repair the damage taken in their battles. Or rebuild themselves to struggle and strive more effectively.

    * Clarkent Kal: Ditto the crusaders of the God of Heroes. Though there is the darker temptation to “part out” condemned criminals as a way to redress the damage they have done to others…

    * Crax: Indeed, some people in need of transplants might not inquire too closely where a lifesaving part comes from. Murder can be useful! And the option of moving minds between bodies might create whole new kinds of murder.

    * Fitz: Likely curses transplant chirurgery, for the neglected of society — the “disposable people” — are the easiest and most frequent victims of organlegging. Sorry, Fitz; but Etterskell knew that introducing transplantation would have multiple consequences.

    * Masque: You mean I can change my appearance completely? Even usurp a trusted person’s identity? Yes, please.

    * Mister Rancor: Oh, the things you could do to an enemy who has fallen into your power…

    * Nadiya BrightBringer: In principle, at least, any harm short of death can be fixed, a hope for those who suffer and a reward for resilience. And speaking of resilience… you can change yourself to better survive your circumstances. Or hope to become the person — or creature — of your dreams.

    * Nagus Sterling: Did someone mention organlegging? That sounds profitable. And mind transfer? That sounds even more profitable. How much would people pay to become young again? (‘How much would you have to pay someone to become old in return’ is not a question asked very often.)

    * Oeneous: Yes, some people might want new, improved, or just different, ah, “equipment.” Feed your fetish!

    * Strangecharm: Fixing a broken or malformed body may be a small thing to the world at large, but can be enormous to the individual. Can the arts be used for the “little people” of the world, as well as the rich and powerful?

    * Thoal Anni’in: Umm… Sorry, I got nothin’.

    This is only the beginning.

    Geography: Cracks

    Smack Track
    Avoid the Crack
Or you might not be coming back

    Flap Strap
    You passed the Gap
A careless step became a trap

    Fizz Whiz
    The world a quiz
The Was or Will-Be now the Is

    Bread Fled
    A spinning head
They say that you are long long dead

    Torn Corn
    So forlorn
A thousand years before you’re born

    Pell Mell
    Etterskell
The world was broken when it fell

    Mime Chime
    The Cracks in Time
Stay away — and heed the rhyme!

    — Children’s play-song

When Etterskell broke the nascent World, Thoal Anai’in welded it back together as the Chimney. But he couldn’t fix it perfectly. He left Cracks.

These can look like ordinary crevices… until you step on them or lean on them. Then they may open and you fall through. You’re still in the same part of the Chimney, but you’re in the past or future. Years and years. Maybe centuries.

People have found ways to open the Cracks deliberately, but there’s no way to control their destination. A given Crack always leads to the same relative time, such as “57 years ago,” or “302 years in the future” — and if you can open it again on the other side, you can go back. But no one can know until somebody goes. Moreover, Cracks never last long. Fall through a Crack — not long to get back, the saying goes. The Crack may seal in days, hours, or maybe it seals right after you went through and you’re screwed.

A person would have to be brave, foolish, or desperate to go through a Crack deliberately. That doesn’t mean people haven’t found uses for Cracks. The easiest use is the nastiest: Shove someone you don’t like through a Crack and whee, they’re almost certainly gone forever! Though the God of Heroes may have something to say about that…

There are no Cracks in the Murdered Land. Not anymore. Mortals do not know whether this was a direct consequence of the Great Slaying or a separate, willed act by the God of Murder.

Finally, Gods cannot go through Cracks. Gods are too big. Best guesses are that the attempt would simultaneously kill the God and shatter the World. Fortunately, there is no God of Suicide as far as anyone knows.

Nagus Sterling and Alitheon were, ah "discussing" whether learning should be commodified or free to all. They tried to stay civil so as not to place themselves too much under the influence of their sibling Mister Rancor. Both made cogent points.

Nagus grimaced. "I suppose Etterskell will make sure that both options end up happening. And more we didn't think of." Mention of their erratic sibling led them to attend to perceive Etterskell, though Qe was far distanct in the Chimney. Etterskell sat beside the body of awoman murdered by a jealous lover. Blood spattered and pooled on the gravel path where she lay. Qe had a pensive expression on qis face. Qe also seemed to have invented a new gender, but that was nothing strange.

"The deed is ugly," Etterskell said to her observers. "But the blood is pretty. So red. And the shapes. But it dries so soon, and isn't so bright anymore." Qe pondered. "But I think I can save it. Bright, bright red, without the need to cut people open." Qe picked a pebble from the path and a star from Alitheon's firmament. Qe pushed together the hardness of the stone, the redness of the blood and the brightness of the star. "There!" Pretty, and durable." Qis expression turned apologetic. "Oh. Alitheon. I should have asked first? Sorry,m sorry. You can name it, if you like."

Without hesitation, Alitheon said, "That's all right. It's a ruby. It has a trigonal crystal system."

Nagus Sterling coughed slightly and clasped his hands to stop his fingers twitching. "Yes. Very nice. Could I have it?" He tried to sound casual.

Etterskell shrugged and tossed him the jewel. "Sure, whatever." Qe was already thinking of other thing.

"Making new things is fun," qe said. "I liked putting parts together into new wholes." Qe paused. "More people could enjoy it too. Like mortals. So they can. Alitheon, could you work out the details? Have it all make sense, invent tools because mortals can't just will it and make it happen. Please?"

Alitheon blinked at the sprawling new possibilities woven into the world. A whole new science of separation and recombination, ready to be formalized in laws, procedures and recipes. Ooh. "I think I can manage," the God murmered. "No trouble."

"I'll help," Nagus Sterling added promptly. The commercial possibilities are enormous...

"Thank you, you're both such dears!" And Etterskell was gone.

Etterskell often works with other Gods to reify new possibilities. Conversely, iother Gods easily obtain Etterskell's help in any project to multiply and diversify the world. But anything the God does tends to be usable by many or even all Gods, not just one, which may prompt caution in recruiting the Maker of Multiplicity. Fellow Gods can ponder for themselves the uses they can find for...

That Interference had better explicitly include that time travel is impossible, because the Geography pick I was working on last night gave that possibility. Not controlled time travel, but time travel, through the... Cracks.

Given a formal Interference, they can lead somewhere else.

The God of Small Things has established that the world includes rocks, so I use rocks to explain Etterskell's next domain.

What is a rock made of? It may not be a homogeneous thing. Look closely enough, and you will see it is made of smaller parts: crystals of different minerals, or grains of clay or other sediment. The whole is made of parts, into which it may be divided.

All things in the world that Etterskell broke are made of such physically separable parts -- unless a God specifically acts to make them whole and indivisible in themselves. And those parts in turn can be divided into smaller parts. If there is a bottom, some irreducible quantum of matter, only the God of Small Things can say.

Living things, too, have parts. Even minds have parts: memories, passions, temperaments and other aspects of identity and character. People are made of bodies, minds and souls. Societies are made of individuals.

But there are other ways to divide an entity. A rock has a shape, a color or colors, a weight, a texture, and other properties.

Thus does the breakage of the Great Oops pervade the Sharded World.

    Secondary Domain: Parts and Wholes

Very abstract, I know, but laying the basis for later picks. Because all parts are separable, if you know the way to split them off, and all parts can be reassembled into other wholes, if you know how to force them back together.

The full implications of this csan only be explained once other Gods have contributed more details to the World.

No joy without a chance of sorrow
    Today does not ensure tomorrow
Trouble's sure, no need to borrow
    Because the world is broken.

    The foolish overcome the clever
The best-laid plans are certain, never
Your life a careless act can sever
    Because the world is broken.

But evil luck's no cause to grumble:
    Braggarts oft invite a tumble.
    Remember even gods can stumble!
    Your enemies can also fumble,
    Vaunting schemes a fallen jumble:
That's just the way all cookies crumble
    Because the world is broken.

No one escapes the power of chance,
    And sad or happy circumstance,
So grin and shrug as you advance
And claim your pratfall as your dance!
    Because the world is broken.

    --A Psalm to Etterskell

    Secondary Domain: Accidents

Etterskell didn't mean to break the world. It was an accident. That act made accidents a fundamental part of the new world, which no one can protect against completely.

This does not rule out the possibility of a God of Fate as at least a secondary domain. It may be that some accidents serve a greater plan. But it will take a God to make it so.

Has Thoal-Anni'in specifically taken action to make this cylinder a singular entity?
