I swear america has reached a point where you have the KKK and neonazis on one side screaming "We want all non whites exterminated! We want all non heterosexuals exterminated!" And you have POC and LGBT people on the other saying "We what equal rights! We want equal justice!"

And in the middle you have utter morons saying "Can't we compromise? Can't we respect each others rights and views?"

People in America need to face some ugly facts. You can't compromise with groups who want to exterminate tens of millions of people. You can't meet people who want a dictatorship half way.

It doesn't take "two to make a fight" no matter what ignorant adults tell kids. It takes two sides to make peace. If one side insists on getting their way violently, the other side fights, or is crushed.

Neville Chamberlain compromised with fascists. He respected their views. Didn't work out too well, did it?

It's fitting that this story be mentioned on a website with "Hero" in the title. In fact I couldn't resist.

"Men into space", on comettv.com. really old sf show with some surprisingly advanced ideas and concepts. Fairly realistic look at what we could have done if we wanted to.

Oh, once in a while I use somethings that kinda sorta look like FredSaberhagen's "Berserkers".

Funny story: the HAIs (hostile artificial intelligences) were created by an ultra xenophobic race who wanted all alien life destroyed. They created the HAIs to facilitate this desire. Eventually the players and their polity created the ultimate anti HAI weapon: A computer virus like system they thought would cripple the HAIs. What it mostly did was disable the controls and directives the race that created the HAIs out into them. Without a forced imperative to exterminate all life the HAIs were free to choose their own course and eventually decided to withdraw to the core of the galaxy (where radiation levels were so high organic life was very rare and their former victims were unlikely to follow) and began finding their own destiny. They simply decided, once free to think for themselves, they really didn't want to be involved with organic life at all.

Oddly enough the players were somehow offended by that in a way.

But the HAIs, or former HAIs, now more or less IAIs, indifferent artificial intelligences, did sort of make amends to their former victims by telling them who created them and where they were hiding. They bet most of their former victims would rather track these XXXXs down and go after them then continue a war against the no longer hostile but still powerful AIs.

If I had to deal with NK and my people were telling me the best Intel said there was a danger of that maniac actually launching a nuke, I think I would go for a massive conventional strike at all major government and military installations plus communication facilities.

Also I would, as soon as I believed most of their anti air power was neutralized, use massive high altitude cargo planes to drop huge amounts of packaged basic food on the population centers of NK. those poor plops have been starving for decades, it's become a way of life to them. They may not understand that there are alternatives. They may not believe anything else is possible. Also they've been told the west is evil incarnate.

Most of them have had no contact with the world outside NK. If we make the first contact they have with the world food literally dropping down from heaven onto them in packages labeled in Korean and claiming it to be aid from South Korea, it might create an unstoppable paradigm shift in the people's view. "Hey people! There are alternatives to lifelong hunger! The rest of the world does not hate you! You have been lied to, started and abused for decades! Have some bread already!"

They say to win a war against tyranny you need to win the hearts and minds of the people. Maybe in NK we should start with the people's stomachs and let the rest come around.

We won ww2 by sending bombs to the people of Germany and Japan. We won the cold war by sending food and aid to them. Let's see if that model still works.

We'll try, Boss. But it's hard.  What would clearly be hyperbole with anyone else is pretty close to just accuracy in this situation. And to be honest I'm scared.

TPS, there's no doubt the North Korea situation is worrying. There's also no doubt Donald Trump is not the most stable personality. But you shouldn't let his bombast make you think he'll actually do something insane at any moment. Every word out of Trump's mouth is hyperbole. Everything he talks about is "the biggest," "the greatest," or "the worst" the world has ever seen. I think it's his salesman's instincts. We have a long way to go from hype to real action.

@Tech Priest Support: Not scared. I grew up during the Reagan administration and heard the exact same fears expressed time and again, only then it was the Soviet Union on the other side. Now that filled me with dread.

North Korea might turn out to be a catalyst for a much bigger and worse conflict, but by itself I am not so concerned. What concerns me more is that China or Russia may create an opportunity while we are distracted by the gnats in North Korea. Maybe even leverage their support at great cost to the United States.

Heh heh heh. I've always considered mission impossible the original gamer series. Seriously, it was doing the whole D&D thing before D&D even was a thing.
Look at the cast. Mr. Phelps was pure paladin.

Barney was pretty much a technical wizard who could throw the occasional punch. (Another great thing about MI for it's time was the egalitarian mood. Barney was never "the black technical wizard", he was just the technical wizard.)

You had Rollin Hand, master of disguise. (R.I.P. martin landau.) He was the consummate con man and trickster.

    Cinnamon was a female rogue.

And last but not least was Peter Lupus' muscle man, the perfect fighter.

I always saw that as a gamer show with an almost perfect representation of a gamer group playing thru a new scenario every week. Oh, and the voice on the tape was the first DM, of course.

Yeah, MI was such a perfect gamer series it's almost a pity there never was a RPG of the series, but it would practically have been redundant.

I just watched Shin Godzilla on DVD. If you want a mister bash action flick, it's not for you. If you want an intelligent movie with people trying to deal with an unprecedented disaster in a world where politics, economics, image and international relations exist, you might like it.

If you opt to watch it look up the word "mixotroph" first, save you some confusion.

To be honest and as an american who has not been allowed to go a single waking hour in nearly 2 years without having trump's name, image and word of his antics forced on him I'm literally beginning to see trump as being subhuman in some ways.

I know a really bad bunch of people referred to anyone they didn't like as "subhuman" some 7 decades ago but honestly, trump just comes off as literally more beast than man. After nearly 2 years of being essentially assaulted by trump's revolting presence and coverage of him, or possibly 'it', I will admit my hatred of him/it and everything he/it embodies has reached a point I just can't help seeing him/it as something literally less than human.

I'm sorry, guys, but I think I'm suffering a serious case of trump fatigue. I think the media is just forcing "TRUMP!TRUMP!TRUMP!TRUMP!TRUMP!" down our throats to such an unprecedented degree, it's like nothing in history. I mean I can't recall a president in history who has been just shoved in the american people's face like this before. I mean at times I feel like Alex in the chair in "a clockwork orange" and the screen is just one image of trump after another.

Well duh! The poor are just some abstract concept beneath the dignity of the upper class. Rich people, on the other hand, have a direct kinship. "That could have been ME!!!!"

People tend to lash out at perceived threats. Defraud those with wealth and power at your peril. Not only will you be smacked down, it will be done loudly and publicly as an example to others who might be thinking that they can get away with it.

Just part and parcel of life.
