  1. Re: The things I've learned playing a Speedster... If you buy up your defences and stick a Strength slot in your multipower you can call yourself Superman...
  2. Re: WWYCD: Illegal Worker Assault's not an American citizen either. Tweaking the question appropriately, I doubt he would care. He's not a Law and Order twinky.
  3. Re: Anyone have solutions for the Stun Lottery that a high dice Killing Attack create The problem is that you're not bulletproof. The Stun Lottery makes it very expensive to be bulletproof. Worse, it makes bulletproof characters excessively tough against other attacks. By "bulletproof", of course, I mean "doesn't take Body and can't be Stunned by a (single) bullet". The situation only becomes worse when you have characters that can bounce tank shells off their chests. Sure, that's easy to do, but they will end up lying flat on their backs afterwards far too often. I emphasised the "bulletproof" case because guns are the most common killing attacks most characters will encounter. Furthermore, they are most commonly encountered in the hands of mooks, not supervillains.
  4. Re: Things I learned playing a Thief Who? On topic: Magic User/Thieves and Illusionist/Thieves rock. Actually it was surprisingly hard for me to think of anything, even though the DnD character I played the longest and to the highest level was a thief. What I mostly learnt from that campaign was how to play a Magic User, both from watching other players and from my stint as GM. I also learnt that high level =/= Monty Haul. We earned our levels.

  6. Re: The things I've learned playing a Martial Artist Besides, Karate Kid was a really cool character. I was quite upset when he was killed off. It was a good story, though. Particularly when his wife killed the guy that did it... Best of all, though, Nemesis Kid, the guy that did it was his oldest opponent - someone who joined the LSH at the same time he did, but who was a spy. It was a character death done right. KK was, by definition, the best.
  7. Re: What I learned playing a fighter... A Lance and a Bow is better than just a Lance. Corollary: a Bow you can't use from horseback is useless.
  8. Re: What I Learned Playing a Mage.... Anyone can do damage. You can fly, change shape, turn invisible and read minds. And, of course, defend against other Mages...

  10. Re: Anyone have solutions for the Stun Lottery that a high dice Killing Attack creates? Don't use it. Use a flat rate, constant Stun modifier instead. It's described in the book. There was an article on the topic in Digital Hero too, IIRC. I've found that doing this gives a feel closer to the source material than the "standard" version.
  11. Re: What I learned playing a fighter... Armies are useful. They're the difference between a king and a wandering scumbag.

  13. Re: The Things I've Learned Playing A Mentalist You stole my joke... And my telepathy means that I know they really mean it!
  14. Re: Help! World of Edean Pantheon Burke? I like the connection in Greek myth between Aphrodite, Ares, Eris and Eros. See Helen of Troy for how that kind of thing works out.
  15. Re: So how does evil worship? Check out the ancient Chinese doctrine of "Legalism". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legalism_(philosophy) This is as good a "Lawful Evil" doctrine as any. It certainly worked for the First Emperor. In general, though, "evil" religions would be the religions of "the enemy". That is, if the Good Guys are in Upper Egypt, the patron god of Lower Egypt is likely to be identified as the god of evil. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sutekh Similarly, even other branches of the same religion can be seen as "evil". Heresies are always good fun. Are they evil, or are they right?! "Real" supernatural evil will often operate through conspiracies, often using "good" cults as a front. Once big-E Eeevil is out proud and fighting, you are usually in deep trouble.
  16. Re: The thing's I've learned playing a Brick... But LOTS of REC is better. Assault's original version had 60 STR, 4 SPD, 66 END and 24 REC. He never had any problems with END, for some reason. Come to think of it, he seldom had problems with STUN...
  17. Re: I can't wrap my head around a.... Assault looks mortified. He likes behaving like a Big Dumb Brick. It works for him, and has for years. I wouldn't really call him tactically inept though. He knows how to work with other people. It's just that ultimately he's a toe to toe slugger.
  18. Re: So the King is a Vampire You should take your own advice. --- More importantly, the "sympathetic vampire" seems to be a (primarily) modern reinterpretation of the legends. Frankly, it's rather creepy. To put it simply, if any of my characters ever ran into a sympathetic vampire in a game, they would stake it, and I would smile my widest smile at the GM... I do that kind of thing occasionally. WARNING: Game Anecdote! One such occasion occurred in a Runequest game. One of the other PCs was an heir whose inheritance had been stolen by his Evil Uncle. Eventually the GM set up a touching reconciliation scene. Unfortunately he forgot that my character was a Berserker...

  21. Re: So the King is a Vampire Vampires are demons. End of story. Heretics may have other opinions. That's OK, because it's OK to kill heretics and take their stuff too. Incidentally, what relevance does "Personally, I think that each and every living being is unique" have to do with the UnDEAD? If it's not obvious, my preferred fantasy settings lean towards Swords and Sorcery rather than what Michael Moorcock described as "Epic Pooh" (http://www.revolutionsf.com/article.html?id=953 ). This is, of course, the exact opposite of my inclinations in the Superheroic genre. There ya go.
  22. One for the GMs here: Assume you were going to run a campaign. You don't want to use a published setting, but you are too pressed for time and inspiration to develop something especially clever. What would you do? The most basic setting is, of course, "a dungeon and a nearby village", but that's lame even by my standards! What I was thinking was creating something like a bunch of oasis cities around the intersection of couple of major trade routes. This combines simplicity - there are only "a few places to go", with the potential for significant political intrigue, military conflict, empire-building and all the other good stuff you would want. The map itself wouldn't need to be anything special - basically a few squiggles showing the main roads and rivers, and a few dots marking the cities and other interesting places. Stick in a few hills and other interesting places, and you're good to go. The politics would be easy too. Just describe who rules each city. A couple of them could be subjects or client states of larger empires which are mainly off the edge of the map. You might want to describe a couple of nomadic groups too, but it shouldn't be necessary to go into much detail about them. Who cares about where they graze their flocks in any particular season? You really only need to know about their leadership, military potential and significant religious/magical sites... Anyway, that would be how I would deal with creating a setting in the least possible time. How would you approach it?
  23. Re: I can't wrap my head around a.... I'm not particularly into mentalists, mystics, power armour and gun bunnies. I prefer bricks, energy projectors, speedsters, martial artists and gadgeteers. In the latter case, gadgeteers that are also one of the other archetypes. In terms of origins, I tend to prefer aliens and Hidden Land types, with the occasional trained or intentionally enpowered character. I will play mutants or science accidents, but I tend to find them a bit generic. Mystical origins are definitely "meh", aside from certain flavours of Hidden Landers. Patriots are right out. Even if I was to play a character on a government payroll, they wouldn't be a Patriot. I prefer lighter characters to darker ones. Even if I was playing a Batman type, he wouldn't be Mr Angst. The character I am currently working on is a Speedster/Brick, who is basically a variation on Superboy. I'm trying to tweak the details of his origin to maintain the "epic" feel, without it being a straightforward copy of Superboy's origin. I also read a lot more DC than Marvel. I prefer the JLA, the Teen Titans and the Legion of Superheroes to the X-Men.
