While mainly geared for comic books - Nate Pei kos over at Blambot.com has some wonderful fonts for use.
Some are pay fonts and some are freebies, you just need to go through the store and get them.

I would love to see an app that would output a character sheet in a smudgy, old-school format:

PS: This sheet actually belongs to a poster here named culhwch, I think

Oh, yeah! And I still have the character sheet! Just like you, we started with the Champions box set. The character's name was Gospel Singer and had sonic powers built with an Elemental Control. He was kind of a weakling, as I was new to the concept of Character Disadvantages, so I didn't take enough to get the max points allowed (because...why gimp your hero????? ). I don't remember any of the other's characters other than one had a Hunted: Viper....and those dudes kept messing us up!

The first wave of role-playing design was its own Renaissance, marked by greatness of all kinds. If you were playing then, you'll remember. And if you weren't, you'd be amazed at what that wave held. One of them was Champions, the Super Role-Playing Game.

Hero Games is proud to present Champions Now, to be created by pioneering game designer Ron Edwards, author of Sorcerer and co-founder of The Forge. Ron will revisit the original three editions of first-generation Champions (1981 to 1988), recovering the power of this foundational era of superhero roleplaying.

To learn more, including reading a playtest document and watching videos, head over to Kickstarter. If you like what you see, please back our ambitious, fan-inclusive project.

With this announced, I thought it might be prudent to explain what Champions Now will – and won’t – be.

Is This The Hero System 7th Edition? No. This is exactly what it says it is: a version of Champions inspired by its earliest roots in 80’s gaming, yet updated for the 21st Century. Technically speaking, it’s not even a “Hero System” product, because Champions predates the Hero System as an independent game engine, which was born out of it.

Does It Replace The Hero System 6th Edition? No. Nor the fifth or fourth editions, either. Each of these versions of the Hero System has its own feel, style of play, storied history, and large number of support products. We still sell them, support them, and will continue to do so. (I’m personally still publishing Hero System 6E material.) If you like them, please continue to play them. We wouldn't ask you to do otherwise.

Is This First Edition Champions? No. Well, not exactly. A lot has happened in roleplaying game design and theory in the last forty years, and Champions Now will take this into account. Unusually for a version of Champions, Ron is placing a large focus on character play and development through play, but far less on mechanical character creation. This is his vision of Champions, informed by the important work done by himself and other small press game designers over the last decade. It isn’t simply a reprint or our version of an “OSR” game.

Why Ron Edwards? Besides being a Champions fan from way back, Ron is considered by many to be the father of the “indie” game movement of designers who self-publish their work, which often focus on collaborative storytelling and narration. He is also the author of numerous interesting essays on comic books and roleplaying games, some of which are going to find their way into the pages of Champions Now. You can read some of his work HERE.

What is your agenda here? Simple. We thought it would be interesting to see what Ron would do with the early versions of Champions that he loves, and he thought it would be interesting to spend time after the successful conclusion of the Kickstarter project including you - the backers - in what that will eventually mean. I can't answer any further because I don't know yet. You'll have to participate to find out.

This project is an extension of an export template I wrote a few months ago.  I had so much fun writing that template that I decided to develop a full app.

    Features
Import characters from Hero Designer using this export template Characteristics and Skills may be long pressed and a check will be made Dice rolling tools (3d6, Hit, Damage, and Free Form)  The H.E.R.O. tool generates random 250 point 5e supers (shout out to Cassandra for allowing me to use her original idea) Track statistics about your die rolls, including average values, distribution, total stun etc.
This is still very much a work in progress and I have plans to add more features as time goes on.  For now though I feel that it’s mature enough to release to the general public.

I did try to incorporate this sort of thing in the Fantasy Hero Basic PDF I did up for my home game.

For example I defined things like maces as being Armour Piercing against non-rigid armours.
For weapon speed I gave some weapons a Dex penalty/bonus for initiative purposes.

This thread is for everything you didn't like about it.

Spoilers:  You will fall asleep several times.  Damn this movie was long.  Lots of plot seeds they introduced and then did nothing with.  They could have trimmed at least an hour and lost nothing.

Here's my summary of the first session. Once we got the meta-plot introduced, the bulk of the night was spent with the PCs just getting to know one another and riffing off each other with minimal GM input.

Episode 1 – Rome: You have each been summoned to Rome to meet with Pope Sylvester II. His Holiness tells you they have been hearing troubling reports about a Khazar/Turk leader named Prince Kor, who has been uniting the steppes tribes in the area east of Byzantium and north of the Caspian Sea. Some claim Kor has mystical powers, and that his armies include many foul and monstrous creatures. The Pope confides he has received information from other sources indicating that Prince Kor may be more than he seems, and it’s possible he may in fact be the Antichrist foretold in the Book of Revelations. He needs people he can trust to journey east, investigate this Prince Kor, and report back if these fears are well founded or not.

Your journey is to be completely unofficial, but the Pope will support you with whatever resources you need. He introduces you to a trusted confidant, a merchant named Giordano Pironti, who will take you East to Constantinople, and can deliver messages back to Rome. If you need assistance or advice, His Holiness also says you can contact Arnulf, the Archbishop of Milan who is currently in Constantinople trying to arrange a bride for Emperor Otto III.

Afterwards, Tyri and Aeddan bond over drinks in a tavern, while Geralt holds vigil overnight asking God to bless your journey. Father Edmundo has some affairs to put in order before you leave. And Abida is invited to dinner at the estate of Gregory I, Count of Tusculum, who claims to be a friend of the Pope and is eager to support your mission if you’ll only tell him what it is…. Abida tells him little of substance, but he gives you some names of people you can contact in Constantinople if you need assistance.

The next day, you set sail on Pironti’s ship. A favorable wind takes you to the Isle of Rhodes in 10 days, where you put in for the night.

culhwch reacted to Steve Long in MYTHIC HERO: What Do *You* Want To See?
Oh yeah, absolutely -- 61 sample spells, to be precise. They're written up as one short descriptive paragraph and then one game info paragraph (rather than getting a "spell template" header like in HSG, for space reasons), but they're in there.

Currently I have completed sections on Australian Aborigine Magic, Finnish Magic, and Slavic (Russian) Magic (each with plenty of sample spells, of course!), and partially completed sections on Egyptian and Norse Magic. Several other mythoi, such as Ainu and Etruscan, have a paragraph or sidebar explaining briefly how magic works and giving vernacular terms for spellcasters and such, but no fully fleshed-out system or spells. And I expect to add to both counts going forward, since there are plenty of mythoi left (I have some books on Hawaiian magic that might yield a system, for example).

Once MH is published (with magic systems included), I am considering pulling out all the magic systems and creating a separate book of them, for those who are only interested in that sort of thing. Not sure I'd have enough material to fill a whole hardcopy book, but at the very least I could do it as a PDF. We'll see -- it's hard to make predictions when there's so much work left to do!

P.S.:  I left out the Chinese and Voodoo mythoi in this discussion, since both get effective coverage in HSG, so I just cross-reference that.

At last it can be revealed!

At last it can be revealed! I took advantage of some free time in ace artist Eric Lofgren's schedule earlier this year to get him to create a beautiful piece of art that I currently intend to use as the cover of Mythic Hero. He took my idea and executed it superbly.

I don't have a finished book. I don't have any specific idea for how I'll publish the book when it is finished. But man, do I have a kick-ass cover.
