  1. Re: The Super Darwin Awards Can I help that it was what the DM ruled? (Most versions of D&D have been open to interpretation, though each successive release does help clarify things.) Heck, I might even have the details mussed, that was some 14 or 16 years ago.
  2. Re: List of Professions Package Deals used to be how most professions were noted in game terms, I could probably dig through my book pile and see if there are any useful ones in there that haven't been covered yet. (Which reminds me, I need to look at the compiled list again.)
  3. Re: Letter to yourself Halo: Would probably try to warn her younger self to make sure she's using a safety harness while up on the scafold during the up-coming tomb exploration in Egypt. With luck, she'd end up as a supra who still has the use of her legs. Leopardess: Wouldn't actually try telling herself to avoid the initial accident that gave her her powers. But she probably would try to tell herself not to teleport while holding the Orb of Power from the Overstreet Museum. Bloodbird: Would probably write & discard several letters to different versions of herself. [OOC: A lot of major plot elements have gone by over the years.] She would probably try to warn herself so that her roommate Alica isn't killed by Weasel in 1994. (Most other characters haven't been played much—if at all—so answers for them are somewhat lacking.)
  4. Re: The Super Darwin Awards Here's another one from the long ago... AD&D 2nd ed., one of the arcane spellcasters uses the Wraithform spell upon himself. No problem so far, and it does make it a lot harder for the critters to chew him up. Then the party's cleric turns undead, rolling really well. Really, really well... and gets a "D" result... Suddenly the party is missing an arcane spellcaster...
  5. Re: A Thread for Random Musings Looking at the post time above, that was a "bump in the night." Oh yeah, and I declare that I'm dodging (I expect thrown objects in response to corny lines).
  6. Re: A Simple rule about 5th edition material in long running campaigns I'm often finding bits & pieces from previous versions of the game that I consider to still be useful. (That's easy to do, if you're like me in that your Hero System collection is nearing the point of gravitational collapse...)
  7. Re: Story telling skills: Next scene Dr. Destroyer
  8. Re: Help me flesh out a kernal of a setting idea It was published by Antarctic Press for awhile, I'm not sure what happened to the series after that. From what I can find the last issue was produced in 1996.
  9. Re: Most common super hero jobs The Superheroes Book from the expanded Superworld has a short list along these lines, it includes: Agent (FBI, CIA, KGB, etc.) Criminal Doctor Journalist Lawyer Martial Artist Military Pilot Playboy Policeman Salesman Scientist Student
  10. Re: A Thread for Random Musings "She seemed at once, some penanced lady elf, Some demon's mistress, or the demon's self..." —Apollonius of Tyana as quoted by Dr. Petrie in The Hand of Fu Manchu
  11. Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? Red Dwarf: Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers (abridged)
  12. Re: Rail gun damage? It makes the very big ships truely frightening, a 1 petaton hull (300 pts) gets a +60 BODY scale modifier against anything smaller than itself. If we put a ship-scale gauss rifle in one of these monsters, we get: • 1-Petaton Scale Gauss Rifle: 2d6+60 RKA (average 67 BODY) = (after rounding) 19d6 RKA = 1 gigaton of explosives = 4 exawatts energy output (4 quintillion watts). (Woof) So, I think Arthur had the right idea about what to do when faced with these: "Why don't we turn on this Improbability Drive thing?"
  13. Re: Story telling skills: Next scene Dr. Destroyer "Sssshhhhh...hush now, children, and listen as I spin my tale. I will tell you of heroes, villains, and the true story of a city's demise. The day had begun like many another before..." With the vanguard of those called "heroes" scattered about him, Dr. Destroyer returned to making the final checks and adjustments on his latest superweapon. The weapon was intact, the next wave of heroes wouldn't arrive for at least a minute, it was time. An alert signal from a sensor destroid cut in on an emergency channel. "Warning. Warning. Anomalous energy detected." Dr. Destroyer paused, then directed his attention to the data coming in from the unit that had sounded the alert. "Analyze and identify energy field." "Stand by," said the destroid. "Anomaly center located, ten meters from your position. Bearing one eight zero degrees relative your position." Dr. Destroyer placed the machine on fail-safe stand by, and turned to face the place described by the sensory unit. Focusing his attention, sensors, and multiple weapons upon the point in space indicated, Dr. Destroyer waited for the destroid to complete its analysis. "Energy type identified. Incoming spacial and/or temporal transmigration beam. Danger. Danger. Local space-time integrity fluctuations detected." A light like that in the heart of star appeared a few inches above the street. A guardian destroid moving into position was caught in the flood of energy and was instantly destroyed. Several identical points appeared within the next few seconds, the flood of radio-frequency energy blocking out all signals from the sensory destroid. From each line of blazing ultra-bright light stepped a figure clad in technologic armor. Dr. Destroyer watched, planning his response as each figure completed its forward movement and the reality-warping line of light behind each of them disappeared. Each armored suit was disturbingly similar to his own, and yet each was different. "Now, to head-off a few questions and help you keep the story straight, I'll add a few notes as we go..." "Who dares attempt to usurp my place as the foremost being upon the Earth?" asked an indignant Dr. Destroyer (1981). "You are very much mistaken," said Dr. Destroyer (1985). "Only I, Destroyer, am fit to rule this world...this universe." Dr. Destroyer (1989a) made a dismissive gesture and turned to address the armor-clad figure that stood in the center of the impromptu circle. "If you are, as my calculations indicate, another version of myself, then you will know why I—we—have come here." Prof. Preserver said nothing, concentrating upon how best to destroy the superweapon while incurring the least risk to innocent civilians who had not yet been able to flee the city. "Indeed," added Dr. Destroyer (1985b). "You, of this reality, have insisted upon making yourself a threat to my own dominion." "There should be no dissension, we—I—should ensure that all of these lesser beings never again question Destroyer's right to reign throughout the multiverse." said Dr. Destroyer (1990). Dr. Destroyer (2002) laughed, the sound triggering the trans-dimensional temporal neutralizer. Bolts of energy flashed out of the machine, forcing the still-healing weak spots in local space-time open again. Each blast of energy created a temporal feedback loop within the each of the other continui, bringing about the cataclysmic ends of no less than six universes. "The rest of you should have remembered," said Dr. Destroyer, who doffed his helmet, pushed his left hand through his gray hair twice, smiled, and then donned his helmet once more. "You really are you own worst enemy." He turned his attention away from the clouds of wind-wafted ash that had formerly been other versions of himself and watched calmly as the next wave of heroes began their doomed assault. "Nay, that is not the proper tale, thou hast told it wrong, Andrew." "Ah-ah, it isn't your turn, Beuford. When it's your turn you can tell it your way." replied Merry Andrew.
  14. Re: Help me flesh out a kernal of a setting idea I've a fair number of Albedo Anthropomorphics issues, and a copy of the RPG based on it. It is one of the more realistic sci-fi universes where space combat is concerned; battles can take weeks to set up and tend to be over in seconds. When the comics begin is some 200 years after the initial Awakening on Arras Chanka... All 163 of the races began on a single world, the planet Arras Chanka, and all at the same time. There is no archaeological evidence of anything like a pre-history (as Nyrath noted), nor are there any meaningful genetic links between any of the intelligent species. This brought about the development of space flight technologies (fusion propulsion and a Traveller-style jump drive). There have been three periods of colonization, the first two being launched from Arras Chanka (which moved colonies out to a 100 LY radius) and the third from various established colony worlds (which brings the total area of known-space out to some 200 LY).

  16. Re: Rail gun damage? "What's on second?" At tkdguy's suggestion, I'll post something that I'd previously put on my blog page, concerning rules for scaling weapon damages up for Star Hero spacecraft. I was originally planning some conversion work between Hero System and another game that had built-in scaling rules. While taking another look at Star Hero for 5th ed., I found that the book does contain a rule for scaling weapons up to ship sizes. So, I put together a small example based upon this thread, which created the following: The equivalent weapons could be designed by GMs and players if they wish. The example weapon would then be built as a 6d6 RKA (plus the Armor Piercing, I'd left that out as it was a constant for gauss weapons). Those who don't like the idea of applying the scale modifier in play can still use it to design ship weapons of the appropriate size. Now if I'm lucky, folks might actually find this useful...
  17. Re: Songs that inspire(d) you to make a Champions Character Hmmm...some Dio tracks would probably work for this idea too... Sunset Superman at the very least.
  18. Re: Songs that inspire(d) you to make a Champions Character Usually, I do this the other-way-'round, building the character and then finding a theme tune for it. I did build a Martial Artist from Jethro Tull's Black Satin Dancer, though. And way back when (not quite far enough back to trigger the Hero System's Psyche Exclusion Principle regarding time travel, though ), I based some scenarios around songs. A travelling vampire Champions adventure from The Doors's Peace Frog in particular.
  19. Re: Next scene: Foxbat... Wow, crickets and tumbleweeds...in December...where'd everyone go? [echo] [echo]
  20. Re: Robots, Robots for Sale! I never did get to add that supplement to my personal inventory. Aside from U.S. v. Lizard-Thing cited above, I usually build law-related campaign points from the following: The Superhero and the Legal System by Tom Steubing, from Adventurers Club #12, pages 8-22. The Hero and the Law by Aaron Allston, et al., from Champions 4th Edition, pages S47 & S48. Vigilanties and the Law by Kevin Siembieda, from Heroes Unlimted 1st Edition, page 149 (mostly the Crime and Maximum Penalties table). Law by Steve Perrin, et al., from Superworld Gamemaster's Book, pages 12-15. And probably some other obscure bits & pieces from some more obscure superhero games that I forget just now. P.S. Oh yes, and the section Law by Aaron Allston & Steve Long from Champions 5th Edition, pages 31 & 32.
  21. Re: Robots, Robots for Sale! It was in an old issue of White Dwarf Magazine, and I'm no longer sure which one. My personal copy of that issue is one of the things I've not dug out of storage yet, so I'm working from a copy I made for one of my GM notebooks awhile back. The issue originally appeared some 20+ years ago, and back then each page was only marked with the page number and magazine name. I've wondered myself if there's a chance this could be reprinted somewhere, it is well worthwhile and well done. It covers the effects upon the superbeing-community of the Second (The right to keep and bear arms), Eigth (Prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment), Thirteenth (Prohibition against slavery), and Fourteenth (Due process of law and equal protection under the law) Amendments to the Constitution. The "Triplie-A Act" (Android, Artificial Intelligence, and Alien Life Form) is a subsection of the part covering the 14th Amendment.
  22. Re: What would your character do #56? Ooooo... I think, as that would create a universe much like our own, the only appropriate reply I can make is: (In my best "Mr. Gumby" voice...) "My brain hurts!"
  23. Re: List of Professions Archaeologist Required: PS: Archaeologist, KS: Archeology, KS: (specific field's) History Recommended: AK: (specific field's) Country, KS: (specific field's) Culture, KS: (specific field's) Theology, Language(s): (ancient and modern for specific field's country) Related: KS: Library Research, Conversation (for getting information from the locals), Persuasion (for helping in funding the next dig) Notes: Contacts (other academics/archaeologists), Passport I came up with something like this while updating on of my oldest characters (I've had to update her three times now, going from 2nd ed. to 5th.) so I thought I might as well offer a version here.
