As so many people post to the NGD from work, it just seemed appropriate, and funny.

Speaking of which, as someone was elsewhere talking about compiling a "history of NGD" or "history of the boards", this would be a landmark day. Perhaps in the future it will be a day of mourning. Maybe people should turn their avatars black?

I don't know why they called that show "The Avengers." Steed and Peel didn't seem to be very vengeful people.

The Board's Top Hits!
Maybe this could go in the "company questions" forum, but I'll leave it here to be safe.
It would be interesting, maybe even better than interesting, if the board had an automated "best items" thread, where every 24 hours it posted links to the 5 or so items that were repped most in the just-expired 24 hours. Ranking would be by number of reppings, not total rep points given (since that would skew the scale toward the gods' chosen), though the latter could be the second-order ranking number. Maybe break it into two lists, one for non-NGD posts and one for NGD items.
Probably this is board-guts software stuff that's out of your hands, but even if so, you might suggest it as a feature for the next generation.

Not just triggered by Enforcer84, but have been reminded of this from various directions - melancholy, but oh well...
Joy Division, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" -
When routine bites hard, and ambitions are low
And resentment rides high, but emotions won't grow
And we're changing our ways, taking different roads
Then love,
love will tear us apart
again --
Why is the bedroom so cold? You've turned away on your side
Is my timing that flawed - our respect run so dry?
Yet there's still this appeal that we've kept through our lives
Love,
love will tear us apart
again --
You cry out in your sleep - all my failings expose
There's a taste in my mouth, as desperation takes hold
Just that something so good just can't function no more
When love,
love will tear us apart
again --

To be fair, he was indicating that it was a "routine" and therefore a controlled behavior. Although Cancer's point is also valid. And Enforcer84 raises a valid point as well.

Pitch Guy (PG): "Yeah, the Howells! it'll be great! The Howells back in civilian life, that rascally Thurston and his lovey!"
NG: "Uh...yeah...the Howells...and the hook is?"
PG: "They fight crimes! They're detectives! You know, like the Thin Man and Mrs. Thin Man, except zanier!"
NG: "Yeah, zanier...no, I don't think so."
PG: "No?"
NG: "No, nyet, no way, beat it, get lost."
PG: "Wait! Wait! I have the best idea!"
NG: "Okayyyyy..."
PG: "They'll put on costumes and fight crime at night!"
NG: "Get outta my office!"

Re: A Thread for Random Musings
Every so often I sit down and watch a movie that I haven't seen yet, but that apparently everyone else has, and everyone raved about it. It was a hit at the box office, it was a hit with the critics, it may even have won awards (be it an Oscar or some horse-hockey "fan favorite" type award), and so on ad nauseum.
Well, I didn't like the movie and I can't help but wonder if that's just a matter of taste or, in my overwhelming arrogance, if everyone else was just fooled into thinking they were supposed to like it. It's the same with music, or television shows, or just about anything. Yeah, it's mostly about personal tastes, but what about those times when everyone but me likes something?
I mean, sometimes I know I'm the exception, but once in a while I feel like shouting, "WAKE UP!" to everyone I see.

zornwil reacted to James Gillen in Quote of the Week from my gaming group...
Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...
This Wednesday our group started its first game of the BUFFY RPG. My character is a Chicago detective who retired to this sleepy town near Lake Tahoe, California (unknowing that it became the next Hellmouth after Sunnydale was destroyed).
He sees a monster hunter chasing somebody who turns out to be a vampire. He gets involved in the fight and finds out that his 44 Magnum doesn't do much good against vamps. He's saved by a couple of supernaturally-powered monster hunters (other PCs) who tell him to leave their hunting grounds. No fool, my character complies.
Except that the other two characters later on end up in a fight between two OTHER PCs (the town Slayer and an expatriate Troll) and the GM decides that they're brawling it out right outside my house. So having learned from experience, I take my gun, lean out the window, and yell:
"Anybody who's immune to bullets, raise your hand!"

Re: what non-fiction books have you read? please rate it ...
Anatomy of Love by Helen Fisher.
Just finished this one for the second time, loved it, bored Zornwil to near-death talking about it at GenCon.
Fisher takes a look at mariage, adultery, and mating strategies from an evolutionary point of view, and supports her conclusions with well referenced hard data. If you want to know exactly how both the free-love and back-to-the-1950s crowd are wrong, this is the book for you.

You might. It actually has some neat little games that come with it and several multimedia files as well. The docs aren't too bad, and if you already have some experience are a pretty quick read.

Re: Musings on Random Musings
Actually I think he would have if given the chance. I once watched a documentary about the guy wherein his mother described how, in his early teens, he developed an obsession with a particular boardgame that was, in her words, "very complicated". Supposedly he only gave it up because he couldn't get anyone besides his mother to play, and there was no way she could beat him at it. From this I infer that he was probably a gamer born at the wrong time.
