I'm a relative n00b here, but as someone who's had an on-line presence since well before the Great Renaming, I have a more ... cynical ... reserve about internet communities. I think it was mostly based around feelings of personal betrayal. My general personal feelings about such things are that I generally take people at face value. While I realize that this means that I'm very likely to believe things that people tell me that aren't true, I'm not overly concerned about it.
