What would your character do #88

After a difficult battle with a powerful psychic the team leader (or second in command if you're the leader) has been placed in a coma. While in the coma a disturbing discovery is made. The hero was a liar. They are actually a super intelligent child who have given themselves an adult persona and super powers through super science (or sorcery). Despite how long you thought you'd known them they've really only been a hero for the last 4 years. Any history they had before that they've fabricated via powerful mind alteration science (or spells) family members and other people from their "lives" are revealed to be nothing but andriods, synthoids, robots, holograms, illusions, etc.

They have singlehandedly executed a massive conspiracy of worldly proportions simply to lend credibility to their "super persona."

Regardless of this massive conspiracy the Hero has genuinely acted as you remember for the last 4 years and if you reveal their secret they'll never be able to be the same hero the world has known for all of these years.

What do you do?

Nova - "Who bothers ? He has shown his courage defending Earth and Justice for the last four years, and nobody was injured in setting up this elaborate cover. I say we should respect his desire to be known as the world has known him so far. We should investigate further, though, just to be sure this is not some elaborate deception from one of our enemies".

This one would be a little different by character:

Style: Things like this happen in the Mystic world. He'd withdraw to another dimension, possibly several dimensions away, and try to clear is own memories as much as possible. He'd then archive his mind in a hidden book in the Akashik Library and return to Earth. Protected as much as possible, he'd have a long talk with the leader. He would not reveal the secret, so long as the leader had in fact spent the last four years doing good.

AnimeGai: An emotionless AI less than a year old, this would just represent more faulty data in his memory. He'd correct the data, clearly flagging "real events" and "false events," and would only reveal the secret if directly ordered to by someone with the right command codes (in which case he would have no choice).

Flesh Gordon: "Rat on a buddy? Never! Heck, people lie to me all the time! Be honest with me from here on, eh?" Not bright enough to think much about this.

Indomitable Will: "Mind tricks! Deception! Lying to The People and using them as pawns in your twisted games!" Will might kill him then and there unless restrained.

Thirteen: Would realize that the false memories were behind some of the mistakes he'd made over the last four years. Would go through all Thirteen Steps to clear his head, then leave the team. He could never trust the leader again, but he could also never turn on someone who'd been a true ally for four years.

well, right now Metrogaurd doesn't really ahve a Leader, Athena is labled as Official, but she doesn't really Lead, and my character is kinda a "take charge" but anyway the response would be the same no matter who it was, especially considering another of the Heroes is only in High-school

Meteor Man's Secret Id (well this time, the first Meteor mand died saving the rest of the team and a few otehrs from a nuclear explosion) is a Psycologist for supers. he would probably be the first person to see that the thing was a charade, and so keep all the other team mebers away, and set up Barriers so they coudln'thear or see what was going on. he would wait till the hero recovered and then have a long talk with the Hero about whether he wants to continue his Charade, ask him if he wants the rest of the team to know, let him know that he has earned his place in the team regardless of his age. and bassically let him choose what he wants to do. this would all be done in a phyciatric like setting and M.M. would provide counsel to him, then would go with whatever the Hero decided, even if it meant not informing the rest of the team.

Mask of Justice: *I* point out to the GM that this violates my character's whole concept for not twigging on the moment he met the team leader. (The Mask sees things as they truly are, immune to mental illusions, etc. He doesn't have the rep Horus-Re does though.)

The Mask himself becomes extremely concerned; if the team leader could this easily fool his powers, who else could? His effectiveness as a crimefighter is in serious doubt.

Rock Bottom: Would have some serious *ew* issues, as he's been sexually attracted to Thunderfist. (Unrequited, naturally.) If the leader's Secret ID can be kept secret, Rock Bottom is good with that. Otherwise, he'll recommend the kid attend Venture Institute for a few years.

Calculus: This means that huge sections of Calculus' teen years are complete lies. Worse, it completely justifies his paranoia about the suspicious way the team got back together. He is *so* out of there.

Kira Midori: This means the team leader is a telepath of unprecedented power and subtlety, to have prevented Kira from having her telepathy, clairvoyance or precog spot anything wrong. She's not going to be happy with the deception, regardless of the motivation. At the very least she'd expect him to have a massive apology handy.

Talion: "Well, that explains why you were such a sucky leader. Except that all the things you did to my brain must have been feeding right back into you." Four years back would be the incident that gave the team their powers, so he'd believe that the kid was empowered then and used his powers to create an adult persona.

Wait a moment--I missed an important clue! The team has just been in combat with a powerful psychic. So this whole thing could simply be an elaborate Mental Illusion.

Once again, Mask of Justice really shouldn't be affected by this. Rock Bottom is a relatively new hero who hasn't faced many espers--it might take quite a long time to figure out. Calculus *should* know better, but the illusion hits some of his less pleasant buttons. Kira Midori is an experienced psychic herself, and would be the most likely to "roll to disbelieve" the moment the illusion turned fishy. Talion: Well, he has basically no mental defenses, but trapping him in a Mental Illusion means that the psychic is trapped inside it as well.

Kid Thursday would be surprised that no one else knew. 'He' truly believes that he knew all along but it wasn't important enough to mention. But then Kid Thursday is barking mad.

Paragon. Extensive questions in private once the coma lifts. He would also strongly urge that they "come out". At least to the extent of adopting a masked persona that's easier to maintain. He would even aid in faking the death of the high maintainence persona and the adoption of the 'new' team

Masque would be the one in the coma. Unless the team restrained her they would never see her again. Nobody gets that close to masque, ever. She'd even jump bodies and kill the old one if she had to. She's done it before.

Cannis: This would depend on whether the Team Leader in this case was Adam or Anteaus. Adam is the group's employer and mentor. While a powerful mutant in his own right he doesn't usually join the team in battle. Anteaus is the field leader.

If Adam, Cannis would be hurt and rather disturbed since they have developed a romantic relationship. She would, once he awakened, talk to him about the issue. She wouldn't tell anyone if he asked her not to and would most likely remain with the team. There might be a few trust issues for a while, but he's been a good employer, a good friend, his cause makes sense to her and he pays very well. Nevertheless its fair to say that the romance is not going to continue.

If Anteaus, she would be surprised and a little hurt that he'd keep it a secret from the pack. She would, after seeing to it that he was placed somewhere safe and after a little internal debate, notify Adam about what she had discovered and then do as he requested. Most likely, she would end up letting Anteaus know she knows the truth, and agreeing to keep his age secret from the world at large. Though she is going to insist that he tell Orb (the teammate he is dating) the truth. In the long run, it won't hurt the friendship all that badly.

Sailor Io: Is the team leader. There really isn't a second in command per se, but her reaction would be the same no matter which of her fellow scouts or knights it was. Since all of us are in high school, the "child" would probably be elementary school or middle school age.

Io will be very hurt that after everything the team has been through the senshi in question hasn't trusted the group enough to willingly tell them the truth. She will keep the secret until the teammate awakens and then they are going to have a long talk. She will strongly encourage the individual to share the truth with the entire team (and with their boyfriend/girlfriend if they have one). Ultimately, she will respect the person's wishes and keep their secret if that is what they insist on. She will still treat the person as a valued team member and they will still stay friends.
