Cancer
Somehow I missed this recently: From the March 22 issue of Science (perspective at http://www.sciencemag.org/content/339/6126/1393.full , and technical report abstract at http://www.sciencemag.org/content/33.../1398.abstract ): Detection of Carbon Monoxide and Water Absorption Lines in an Exoplanet Atmosphere. The planet in question is HR 8799c, which has been imaged directly. The star is not solar type (it's earlier in type, A5 to F0, and it is very young, about 30 million years old, which means it is substantially more luminous and hotter). The star has four planets, all with masses 5 to 10 Jupiter masses, and of which are still quite hot (900 to 1200 K) from their recent (by astronomical timescales) formation. One of the planets shows spectroscopic features out at 2.0 to 2.3 microns in wavelength that strongly suggest the presence of CO (carbon monoxide) and water vapor in the atmospheres of two of the planets, planets b and c. Methane seems to be present in the spectrum of planet b as well, but that is a slippery claim and they don't push it. The CO and H2O in planet c is what they have investigated most. Currently these planets orbit between 15 and 70 AU from their star; the orbits are not well characterized.

Cancer
You can't buy naming rightsSure can't. The IAU has that authority by international agreement. Stern is off base here. Now, I suspect that the IAU will have to revisit the system of nomenclature for exoplanets, because the existing system is an extension of a system intended to apply to multiple star systems. Some of the orbits that have been found make for problems with that system. I can imagine a scheme wherein the discoverer gets the privilege of applying a unique name (sort of as exists for asteroids now), but then again, something else could be devised, too.
