Re: [Hooks] News articles that could be Pulp Adventures

A paper in the Dec 20 Astrophysical Journal Letters (which is a subscription-only rag, though you can get to the [incomprehensible] abstract here) reports evidence that the Carbonado diamonds, a form of diamond originally found in central Africa and subsequently found in a number of places on Earth, are of interstellar origin. That's more than just extraterrestrial; it's from outside the Solar System entirely.

If your campaign uses weird science, here's a hook for you.

Dumb question time: then how did the diamonds get here?

Solid bits in "dense" regions of space (where the radiation isn't nasty enough to evaporate whatever solids might form) are expected to stick together when they collide, which eventually makes crumbly rocks like carbonaceous chondrites. Most of the latter are remnants of the formation of the Solar System. Still, assuming some of those interstellar chunks get captured by the Solar System, then if they end up on orbits that are Earth-crossing, then they'll more likely than not end up falling to Earth as meteorites (the Earth is pretty efficient about sweeping up loose trash on orbits that cross its own). Diamonds are hard and tough enough to be able to survive passage through the atmosphere and impact, and then last a long time on Earth's surface, long after the rest of the meteorite has burned or eroded away and become unrecognizeable.

It seems that Carbonado diamonds are largely found in alluvial deposits, i.e., the meteorites have been broken down and the bits washed downstream. It's just that the diamonds are (uniquely) still identifiable after that's happened.

Why the Theta Ridiculans use them to power their ships and weapons of course ! The ones that have been found are the burnt out power stones that have been left behind. But what if there was one that still had some power left in it ?:eg:

I was checking out Reptoid pages for this thread, when I came across this gem:

LA Times January 29, 1934: Lizard People's Catacomb City Hunted

Engineer Sinks Shaft Under Fort Moore Hill to Find Maze of Tunnels and Priceless Treasures of Legendary Inhabitants

http://www.reptoids.com/Vault/Schufeltsearch.htm

Do we have any LA Herophiles, by any chance? :D

They are looking for the Reptoids city ? No good can come of this I tell you ! Call "The Empire Club" at once !

It'd tie in great with that 70,000 year old altar to the python god that someone found in Botswana some time back. Great fun of the Lemurian Reptoid-Icke's Black Aristocracy-Order of the Serpent variety!

Maltese Falcon Stolen From Restaurant

Wed Feb 14, 2007 12:18pm ET27

By Michael Kahn

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Where's Sam Spade when you need him?

Thieves have stolen a copy of the bird statue at the heart of "The Maltese Falcon" from the San Francisco restaurant used as a setting for the 1941 film classic starring Humphrey Bogart as the rough-and-tumble private detective.

The small, black figure was swiped over the weekend along with 20 vintage books, including copies of the 1930 Dashiell Hammett novel on which the film is based.

John Konstin, whose restaurant John's Grill bills itself as the "Home of the Maltese Falcon," said the thief broke into the case displaying the statue over the weekend. Konstin is offering a $25,000 reward for the replica's return.

While the statute is not the original movie prop, Konstin said he was offering such a big reward because this copy of the Maltese Falcon was signed by a cast member from the Bogart film.

"We want it back because of the historical and literary significance," Konstin said in a telephone interview. "It means a lot to us."

The novel is considered the most famous example of hard-boiled fiction and was a major influence on writers like Raymond Chandler. The movie helped define the film-noir tough-guy hero of the 1940s and 1950s. Continued...

Damn, beat me to it. :(

BTW, it is called a colossal squid, and is a separate genius from the giant squid.

But it's an effing big squid whatever it's called.

Oops, my bad. Here's an article that gives a better idea of just how colossal this bad boy really is-

BTW, that should be "genus", not "genius". :eg::P

Well, having made a correction, it was necessary to have a mistake in the post making the correction. This is a requirement.

From Annanova(?)

Dog-size rats take over power station

Rats the size of dogs which can even eat through concrete are threatening to plunge parts of Montenegro into darkness.

Workers at a hydroelectric power station on the River Piva say they are too scared to tackle rodents who are also gnawing their way through cables.

One worker told the local daily newspaper Vijesti: "They are horrific. Coming face to face with a rat the size of a small dog is terrifying. We're all too scared to go inside the power station.

"There are thousands of them and they have eaten through all the cables inside the dam walls and are burrowing lots of holes inside it. We are afraid the dam might collapse. We have no idea how to deal with them."

Local authorities are meeting to try and find a way to deal with the giant rats.

A spokesman said: "It's like something out of a James Herbert book, they are even eating through concrete."

Thread necromancy to raise ghosts? How appropriate.
