Background/History: An exceptionally strong and vigorous athlete in his youth, John Proudstar’s mutant abilities first manifested when he wrestled a charging bison to save a young girl. Proudstar became dissatisfied with the seemingly complacent lives led by his tribespeople on the Apache Indian reservation in Camp Verde, Arizona, and he sought to prove he was a warrior in the tradition of his ancestors.

Eventually, Proudstar lied about his age to join the United Stated Marines. Attaining the rank of corporal, he earned a number of medals, including one for rescuing the pilot of a helicopter downed by a thunderstorm during which he witnessed what he believed to be a great bird of lightning in the sky.

After his tour of duty was completed, Proudstar returned to the reservation and was soon approached by ex-newspaper reporter Michael Whitecloud for help in investigating a series of mysterious cancer diagnoses, including Proudstar’s mother. The pair uncovered illegal experiments performed by Doctor Edwin Martynec, himself a mutant who could transform into a hybrid coyote creature. Proudstar battled Martynec before he escaped after setting off an explosion that destroyed his laboratory.

Later, Professor Charles Xavier, founder of the team of superhuman mutant adventurers known as the X-Men, recruited Proudstar as a member of the second generation of X-Men, giving him the codename Thunderbird. Soon after, the new X-Men opposed Count Nefaria, who had taken over the North American Air Defense (NORAD) command center in Cheyenne Mountain in an international extortion scheme. Defeated by the X-Men, Nefaria attempted to escape in a small aircraft, but Thunderbird jumped onto the plane as it took off. He then pulled the canopy to the cockpit off, pulled Nefaria out and lept to safety. Since that time John has been an almost constant member of the X-Men.

Re: Thunderbird Questions

They got him pretty much right' date=' he was second fiddle to all the other x-men. I think he was created all along to get killed.[/quote']

The New X-men creators are on record that the idea was to have one character die early on to shake readers up - anything can happen; characters can die. In hindsight, Thunderbird was the obvious choice for a couple of reasons.

First, as pointed out, he was a second fiddle to someone else in all of his abilities. Even his "bad attitude" personality was second fiddle to Wolverine. Second, he was the US character. The New X-Men was created as a nod to non-US Marvel fans (which is why Wolverine was a Canadian), so the US character was the odd man out.

To power set, he should have some decent ground speed and strength - he was shown as capable of easily catching up to a running bison, then tosssing it to the ground Rodeo-style.

Re: Thunderbird Questions

You do realize James is John's younger brother Warpath, right?

No kidding. The John and James writeups are right next to each other. James, as you noted later, has Ex Agility as the ony difference. The source named was from around 1990 or so. Edit: I did intend to put the agility difference for James and John up, but forgot.

At present James is bigger, stronger and tougher than John ever was. He also has much more powerful enhanced senses, can fly and dual wields vibranium knives that are balanced for throwing.

Good to know.

That said, I believe John's MSH game stats were pretty much the same as what you listed, though he had a EX (20) for Agility (or at least, in one of the books he did).

That said, what was your point? Just being snarky? The only relevence to the thread in your post was to the upgrades on the current version of James. You could've just posted those. Obviously, any FASERIP stats are out of date, I was just providing same since another poster above me mentioned them.

Re: Thunderbird Questions

Hmm. Well, I just reread the few scant appearances John had in the early days.

In Giant Size X-men #1, he catches and wrestles a bison/buffalo to the ground in one grab & toss. Later on Krakoa, he gets snared by one of the mutant plants and yanks it out of the ground in one swift move. The plant is the size of a medium tree, both in bulk and root system. After that he's just kinda there, storywise.

#94 has him burned by a "low-intensity" laser in the Danger Room. He's hurt but it's just a scratch really. He's walking around on it like it's no problem a moment later.

#95 is (obviously) not a good issue for him. He gets his butt handed to him by Gort the Gorilla-Man, who is definitely stronger than him. He's then slammed into Banshee and knocked out by the impact. Huh, woulda thought he'd be a little more resilient than that. When the two wake up later, they spot Count Nefaria escaping in a Harrier. T-bird jumps onto it while it takes off, climbs the length of the plane as Nefaria is flying away and proceeds to smash a couple holes in the cockpit without much difficulty. Apparently the plot keeps him from hauling Count Sterotype out of the cockpit at this point and the plane crashes and explodes. End of Thunderbird's short career as an X-man.

Frankly, he's much more impressive in flashbacks and alternate world stories.

As a minor note, Nefaria is later said to have teleported himself to safety from said crash and later gets ionic powers and kicks collective Avengers rear.

Now ask yourselves why he didn't just teleport away in the first place.

Re: Thunderbird Questions

Let me get this straight: Warpath is stronger, faster, tougher, and has better senses than ever, and he flies now? Sounds like he needs to change his name back to Thunderbird. And he uses vibranium knives? WTF does he need knives for? He needs to drop the knives and adopt a new, more heroic, iconic persona.

Re: Thunderbird Questions

In one of my alternate MU games that I ran MANY years ago (using TSR's old Marvel Super Heroes game), Thunderbird didn't become an X-man, since he already had a steady superhero gig.

He was that worlds Captain America :)

Details, please! I can't be the only one who'd like to see the story behind this.

He's been superhero strong and tough for a while now -- at least since he came back at the tail end of New Mutants/early X-Force. He was that teams "brick," and they just kept making him bigger and bigger and bigger. They'd occasionally remember his speed and senses, but for the most part he was just the super strong guy that did the normal comic book super strong guy stuff.

The flight and the knives are both pretty new (and uncalled for, really, if you ask me). I know he got the knives as a gift from Storm after she married Black Panther (and, for reasons unknown, decided to send him, and only him as far as I know, a ridiculously expensive gift).

Re: Thunderbird Questions

That I recall, Warpath's flight ability happened when Warren Ellis was writing the book. There'd been this "6 months later" event involving the aftermath of the High Evolutionary deciding to suppress mutant powers and the X-men having to go stop him on his space station.

Afterwards the X-men fought the Neo, which was a suddenly retconned-in race of immortal supermutants who had been decimated by the High Evolutionary's attempted cure. After a while no one talked about the Neo any more.

Gen-X had a storyline jump where Synch died, among other events.

X-Force, meanwhile, wound up working with Pete Wisdom and since he claimed all mutant's powers had rebooted in the wake of the HE's cure, that Warpath should be able to fly if he tried hard enough. This worked somehow.

Funny, Wisdom never tried to convince Cannonball that he had heat vision if he wanted or that Mirage could become superstrong.

Anyway that's not as annoying as how his superhuman senses developed. At one point, he and the rest of X-force encountered Mimic who, upon duplicating Warpath's powers, started screaming about how hard it was to control these newly enhanced senses he'd acquired. Warpath was confused as he'd seemingly never noticed them until just then. Yeesh.
