That's up to everyone else. I throw in a few every time I do a roundup, about enough to replace the ones I screen out for various reasons, but the bulk of the new names come from other contributors. As soon as death tribble gives up trying to talk me into replacing names I've already rejected, he'll start throwing new ones. Hopefully, that will spur others into a fresh spate of creativity.

Onward to 10K.

Kittyhawk--"a flying wet brick with a Jedi mind trick" (a PC water elementalist with a number of other apparently unrelated powers, including feline affinity, flight, a little mind control and general strength and toughness)

Hideous Key--mentalist with a nightmare face

Hidden Dragon--martial artist with invisibility

Catalyst Lass--speeds up different processes, everything from chemical reactions to good ideas

Here's a few more:

Ahriman (Persian Deity. Personificaton of darkness. Basically the Persian Satan)

Mithra (Persian god of light/war; also known as Mithras)

Lamashtu (Mesopotamian disease demon/goddess)

Guererra Sagrada (Sacred Warrior in Mexican)

Too General/Nebulous or Specific Part 3

Dave,

Thanks for including Double Cross. As for trying to talk you out of ones that have been rejected, Hah ! some wish. I have a few more batches of these again. Then I have a new list

Would you find it helpful for a full list of the ones who appeared in the Palladium books and the GURPS books ?

Elk

Elusive Butterfly

Entrance (hypnotise)

F.A.S.T.

Fellow Traveller

Fighter

Fire & Ice

Firefighter

Flash Dog

Flash Harry

Forestal

Fuss

Gang Boss

Giant Frog

Good Samaritan

Gooner (fan of Arsenal Football club)

Grandee

Greasepaint

Grebe

Grey Nurse

Grey Ray

Hero

Heroine

Hill

Himeki

Hottentot (African native. Cf King Solomon's Mines)

Housecarl (Saxon/Norman infantry)

Illustrator

Impostor

Impressionist

Industrial Espionage

Couple of these might be too generic like Fighter, Hero and Heroine.

I have no idea what F.A.S.T. stood for. But for a speedster it might be appropriate.

Fellow Traveller is the name of a paranormal aiding Communists in America. Even today.

Flash Harry is an English name used to imply that someone is a bit of a show off and maybe tied to something not quite legal.

The Hottentot tribe are resiliant to heat but not cold as the book King Solomon's mines prove.

Imposter is like the Chameleon in Spiderman. You may noty know that this is who you are dealing with.

Do you really want to give me tool to reject more names? :)

I'm already familiar with most of the characters appearing in GURPS supplements, though as I said, I credit almost any claim of originality, so I'm rejecting those names only if they are particularly distinctive (e.g. Argurous Astraph and La Fusionne) or submitted along with too many other names from the the same publication (making it a lot less likely that any of them are original).

I don't own any of Palladium's Heroes Unlimited line, partly because I disapprove of Siembieda's litigous history, and partly because I like a little quality in my RPG supplements. If this lack of IP pollution means I allow too many name copies directly from HU products, Kevin can flippin' sue me.

death tribble again

Fighter/Hero/Heroine: Yeah, I hate these. Fighter sounds dumb, and Hero or Heroine are honorifics given by others in response to your actions.

F.A.S.T.: I yanked all the acronyms with no extended version provided unless it was obvious or something came quickly to mind.

Fellow Traveller: Decent euphemism, lousy super name.

Flash Harry: See Fellow Traveller.

Hottentot: History aside, it sounds dumb.

Imposter: OK, I'll put this one back in.

Came up with a few which don't seem to be on the list. Hopefully some of them are interesting enough to make it.

Aleph-Null/Aleph-One

Carver

Crafter/Craftsman (, The/, Hell's/of Dreams/etc..)

Divinity

Downdraft

Evermore

Mender

Moratorium

Ordinance (related to law)

Ordnance (As in Explosive Ordnance Disposal)

Pellucid (means "clear")

Perjury/Perjurer

Skipjack

Stonemason

Suborn/Suborner

Thrall

These seem likely to have been suggested and possibly rejected, but I thought I'd throw them out there anyways.

General Mayhem

Major Havoc (maybe with his Dogs of War)

Too General/Nebulous or Specific Part 4

Dave,

Here are the latest batch.

Ingenious

Ingenuity

Ingenuous

Intellectual

Jericho Siren (what Stuka's had on their undercarraige)

Judo

Kleptomaniac

Kung Fu

Last Exit

Lawrencium

Lawyer

Lemur

Lemurian, The

Lightning Conductor

Liquidiser

Liverbird (symbol of Liverpool)

Lizard Lord

Loge

Lolita

Loot

Looter

Lord Chief Justice

Lovable Rogue

Mafia

Manxman

Master of Disguise

Melting Man

Mess, The

Military Action

Military Intelligence

Military Mindset

The list has Intelligence and Intelligensia but not Intellectual. Again suitable for brainy characters or those with mental powers.

With Judo and Kung Fu, if you are filtering out martial arts you have Hwarang at 2207 currently. But if you are excluding these on the same sort of grounds that you exclude the gun ones then fair enough.

Lawrencium was on the list but then removed. It is the heaviest known element and is radio active. A character sheet for Lawrencium is actually on the Superhero Images thread. Member of the Chemical compound Mk 3. I'll post the page for you. It is on Page 11 of the thread and currently page 2 of the boards topics. Easiest to go to the last page and then jump back. I apologise if I am preaching to the converted. I will also try and post some more images to get the thread back on page 1.

Lemur is probably suitable as the resident hero of Madagascar.

We have a Lemurian Hawk, so The Lemurian could be included.

Lord Chief Justice is a judicial title over here in the same way that Supreme justice or Supreme Court Justice is in America.

Master of Disguise. If this is being excluded because of the awful film with Dana Carvey, fair enough. Also with imposter back in, it might be a moot point.

As for the last three, Military Action, Intelligence and Mindset, it occurred to me that these were good names for army based paranormals. Granted it sounds a trifle silly but instead of coming up with meaningless names the Army has names which do exactly what it says on the can. Intelligence and Mindset are mind powered and Action is capable of being anything the army needs. It could refer to a brick, a speedster or an all-rounder. On their own, the names could be applied to the list but with Military in fron it shows their affiliation. It also shows that the generals are quite capable of reversing a joke with deadly effect on their critics.

There will be a couple more of these yet. When the old board went down I was not able to see what ones had not been considered and adopted or rejected. So I had to start from scratch with the last ones I knew had been submitted. If this means that you are looking at those that have been rejected before, then my apologies. However I cannot overlook the possibility that you maybe missed some, overwrote one in error for example. You are only human. And as one of the few who have actually tried to proof read the entire list for you, I know myself how time consuming and tiring it can be. It is appreciated. There are some great names that have come up through this.

Intellectual does not sound as good as the others, and I do not feel it makes a worthy proper noun.

Many martial styles and guns were filtered out for not sounding like names. There's a rhythm and feel to a good super name. Hwarang has it; Judo and Kung Fu do not.
Lawrencium was on the list but then removed. It is the heaviest known element and is radio active. A character sheet for Lawrencium is actually on the Superhero Images thread. The properties of Lawrencium are indeed impressive, the word Lawrencium sounds dorky.
Lemur is probably suitable as the resident hero of Madagascar.
Lemur has about as much to recommend it as Chipmunk does, cute but hardly impressive.
We have a Lemurian Hawk, so The Lemurian could be included.
Nope, doesn't sound good. American Lotsastuff also works, but American doesn't.
Lord Chief Justice is a judicial title over here in the same way that Supreme justice or Supreme Court Justice is in America.
Supreme Justice sounds good and and carries connotations that Lord Chief Justice and Supreme Court Justice do not. Lord Justice sounds good though, so that's in.
Master of Disguise. If this is being excluded because of the awful film with Dana Carvey, fair enough. Also with imposter back in, it might be a moot point.
Skill-based epithet, yes. Good super name, no.

In each of these cases, adding Military to the beginning makes the name sound stupid. Modern militaries are very aware of the PR impact of their visible activities.

If you're working from an old roundup, then you're not catching anything I missed. I kept copies of all the roundups on my harddrive, and anything that disappeared from one roundup to the next was purposefully hacked. If you copied any submissions posted after the last roundup on the old boards, post those.

Too General/Nebulous or Specific Part 5

Dave,

Trouble is I don't know which ones are which now.

And the next.

Mind Crime

Mob Mentality

Molotov Cocktail

Needle (of Pins and Needles)

No 2

One Man Airforce

One Man Conspiracy

One Man Gang

One Man Navy

Opponent

Paper (partner of Scissors and Stone)

Paramilitary

Pelican

Picture Perfect

Piltdown Man

Pin (of Pins and Needles)

Pine Martin

Plain Jane

Plaintiff

Poetic Justice

Pongid

Possum

Praetorian Guard

President

Prime Suspect

Private Detective

Private Investigator

Professional Killer

Profit Motive

Prussic Acid

Mob Mentality is a Mafia employed emotion controller who specialises in stirring up crowds. Mind Crime similarly.

If Molotov Cocktail is not acceptable, is Molotov ?

Needle. Plenty of people fear Needles. Unless of course this name is copyright but if so I don't know who has it.

No 2. Numbers greater than this might sound ridiculous when applied to the genre, but 2 is referred to a lot in real life.

As regards the One Man names, One Man Army made it in I know but the others may have fallen foul of the genre filter One Man Conspiracy particularly. A significantly powerful flyer could easily qualify as One Man Airforce but One Man Navy is I admit stretching it. I have a vague feeling that One Man Gang might be copyright but cannot say for certain.

Paper, Scissors and Stone were all submitted but I never saw if they made it on the old boards.

Piltdown Man was a famous fraudulant attempt to fool people with the origin of man. Then an evil sorceror actually imbued it with life....

Pine Martin was included as Raccoon was in the original Enemies book. And if Raccoon could get in the Pine Martin which is related to Minks, Stoats etc, then why not ?

Poetic Justice is an ideal vigilante name. Either as a crusader or as someone fairly Punisher like.

If you don't like Profit Motive (which might be better as a team name), what about Prophet Motive ?

Some of the others might be too general again.

There are around 250 new ones after all of this.

One question. One of the German WW2 airplane companies was Blohm and Voss. Might sound ok as a team name and a company but looks daft to me as names for individuals. What do you think ?

Hold on a second there fella...

Batfink's "my wings are like a shield of steel" sidekick was called Karate! He made onto the telly so he can't be too bad!;)

If Kararte can make it why couldn't Kung Fu or Judo?

Mob Mentality just doesn't cut it for a good sound. Mentality is OK but is already on the list.

Mind Crime goes back on the list, but it strikes only as a name for a petty criminal who couldn't come up with something better.

If Molotov Cocktail is not acceptable, is Molotov?
OK, Molotov works.
Needle. Plenty of people fear Needles. Unless of course this name is copyright but if so I don't know who has it.
Hmmmnn... Dumb name, but just the right sort of dumb for a two-bit villain who thinks the name is intimidating. I'll put it back, but I'd never actually use it, because just about every group I've known would just call him Needle D**k.
No 2. Numbers greater than this might sound ridiculous when applied to the genre, but 2 is referred to a lot in real life.
Yeah... in reference to poop.

One Man Army made it beause it's an established and durable turn of phrase. The others just sound dumb.
Paper, Scissors and Stone were all submitted but I never saw if they made it on the old boards.
Rock and Stone stand by themselves. Scissors sounds like a Pulp mobster with an MO or a fetish and got chopped by the Genre filter. Paper works only as part of a gag combo.
Piltdown Man was a famous fraudulant attempt to fool people with the origin of man. Then an evil sorceror actually imbued it with life...
Sorry, Dumb Name filter.
Pine Martin was included as Raccoon was in the original Enemies book. And if Raccoon could get in the Pine Martin which is related to Minks, Stoats etc, then why not?
See my comments about Lemur and Chipmunk in a recent post.
Poetic Justice is an ideal vigilante name. Either as a crusader or as someone fairly Punisher like.
Justice is an ideal vigilante name. Poetic Justice is an ideal spoof name.
If you don't like Profit Motive (which might be better as a team name), what about Prophet Motive?
You're right, Profit Motive would make a good team name, but I don't think it makes a good individual super name. Prophet Motive would be good for spoof pulp or modern (e.g. Father JT Motive's weekly TV show Prophecy Hour) but still doesn't cut it as a super name.
There are around 250 new ones after all of this.
Bring 'em on. >cue SFX-chainsaw<
One question. One of the German WW2 airplane companies was Blohm and Voss. Might sound ok as a team name and a company but looks daft to me as names for individuals. What do you think ?
Agree that they would be daft super names. Disagree that together they make a team name.

Too General/Nebulous or Specific Part 6

Dave,

Here we go again

Public Enemy

Public Enemy No 1

Public Prosecutor

Public Relations

Public Spirit

Punch Drunk

Punishment (Crime's partner)

Purple Heart

Rabies

Red Badge

Red Cent

Red Deer

Redoubtable

Resolution

Rogue

Round Robin

Ryanna the Jungle Queen

Sacrifice

Sap

Science Assassin

Scholar

Scotsman

Second

Secure

Semi-Tough

Sense of Wonder

Sexton (member of the clergy)

Seyditlez (German warship)

Shangri La

Short Round

Some criminals would rejoice in declaring themselves the Public Enemy or Public Enemy No 1. The Press could declare them that as well. Granted it could fail on a too general term.

Of the other Public ones I think Public Spirit might be copyright having appeared in the Marshall Law comic.

The Public Prosecutor is more of a specific American vigilante due to what other countries call the lawyers for the Prosecution. And one who wants to tie himself more to the law might use Public Prosecutor rather than Prosecutor or Prosecution.

Rogue. If you disallowing D+D character types then Rogue would go. Regardless that it is also the name of the X-Man.

If Ryanna is dumped on name grounds, what about Jungle Queen ?

Second can either be used as the number o to do with time.

Shangri La is a hippy paranormal.

A few more to add to the list

Trueno Azul - Blue Thunder, spanish

Circuit - has the ability to turn his body into any conceivable electronic circuit that does not require mechanical parts

Cowgirl

Heartsong - a female adolescent telepath/empath

Roughneck - hometown hero of Bakersfield, CA

Redoubtable I'd change to Redoubt, becoming a slow-moving tough guy with a name akin to Fortress, Bastion or the like.

Round Robin is my favourite! Calls to mind a Bouncing Boy-type character.

Sap (which I think may have been one of mine originally) is used in the sense of drain or a thug's weapon, not the stuff that flows thru plants.

Scholar is perfectly serviceable. Reminds me of Savant in Alan Moore's WildCATS.

I like Shangri La even though it's a place name. You're right the character's gotta be a hippy.

The rest aren't much cop. I still like Science Assassin (another one of my babies) but it may be too weird for some tastes.

Yeah, Shangri La has to go back in.

Too General/Nebulous or Specific Part 7

Dave,

One more after this but there are less than 20 in it.

Sibyl

Silver Age

SLAD (Supreme Lord Admiral of Deneb)

SLED (Supreme Lord Executioner of Deneb)

Small Change

Sound of the Crowd

Southern Gentleman

Spearfish

Squire Go

St Lawrence

Stagger

Steeleye Span

Storvak

Suit, The

Super Criminal

Superhero

Superhuman

Supervillain

Syndicate

Termagent (British ship)

Testify

Thermocouple

Torc

Transporter

Trilobite

Turcopole (cavalry of the Crusades)

Turncoat

Undercover Operative

Underworld

The Sibyl was an Oracle in ancient Rome.

SLAD and SLED. You stated that you wanted acronyms to be fully set out. Whether you believe that these members of the military of Deneb, aliens from my campaign are worthy is your call.

Sound of the Crowd was sonic powered.

The Suit was power armour developed by the government.

Testify had mind control powers based on religon.

Thermocouple had heat and cold powers. Character sheet again in the Super Images thread.

Torc is an old term for a crown or a weapon which was like a tiara. Circular, it went around the head or on top of the head. Celtish I believe.

Transporter is the name of a criminal whose power is to get colleagues to a place. And that's all.

Trilobite is a fossil, so one coming back to life was the idea

Scrum

Dave,

You asked earlier in the thread about Scrum. But received no answer that I could see.

So here is one. Scrum is a term used in the sport Rugby, you know American Football without helmets, body armour, forward passing, TV timeouts, and downs. It refers to a point when the ball goes out of play. The referee calls for a scrum and 10 players on each side form a sort of tortoise in three ranks. Each side then links and pushes against the others while the ball is thrown into the scrum from one side. so you then have a pushing contest while the players try to hook the ball with their fet and pass it backwards out of their side of the scrum.

I like the idea of Scrum as a name. And just check the rules of Rugby if my explanation is insufficient. Good name for a strength based character who pushes instead of lifts.

Trilobite is a fossil, so one coming back to life was the idea

Sibyl - This one's a toughie, because most people know it simply as a woman's name, and cultural connotations largely point toward the famed split-personality patient. But I'm gonna pass it anyway, the alternate spelling individualizes it somewhat.

SLAD/SLED - Yes, you've provided the extended versions of these acronyms, but they end up being Genre Inappropriate. (Maybe this is just a nitpick, but why would aliens from another star system use an English-language acronym?)

Sound of the Crowd - Ironically, this one lacks the sound of a good super name. For the record, I really hate _____ of _____-type names for supers. They can make decent epithets, but I'm likely to reject them as primary names.

The Suit - As a proper noun, this one already has a place as a derogative nickname for corporate executives. I refer you to the comments I made earlier about PR-awareness in the military; the same applies to government.

Testify - Hey, this is a new one (I made a backup of the list before expurgating), and I like it.

Thermocouple - Another new one. Also good.

Torc - I dunno, no one calls themselves bracelet, hat, or necklace either. BTW, the torc was worn around the neck; a variant called an arm torc was worn, logically enough, around the upper arm. I am fairly certain that it was never used as a weapon as it was bent into shape around the wearer, so it didn't come off readily.

Transporter - I yanked that one because we already had Transport, which was WAY better.

Trilobite - It's a little tiny fossil of a bottom-feeding scavenger. I just don't see it.

From the remainder of your list, I like Stagger and pulled Steel Eye out of Steeleye Span.

Yeah, Scrum sounds like a decent name for a British super with athletic-style powers (fast, strong, durable) who likes to get a little rough. He'd have to stay in Britain, though. Anywhere else, he's end up changing his name, because he'd get tired of explaining it.

Too General/Nebulous or Specific Part 8

Dave,

Thanks. As for Scrum you really don't ask an American Footballer on the line how or why they use the name so he could go elsewhere. Plus Italy, France, the rest of the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa play World class Rugby.

All parts of the old British Empire also know what Rugby is.

And here are the last of the old names

US Ardent

US Giant

Vapours

Vaudville (or VaudvilIian)

White Hat (trad Good Guy)

White Hunter

White Russian (name of the anti-Bolsheviks)

Yamato (Japanese Battleship)

Young Turk (common term for an up and comer)

Zoltan the Magnificent

I think Ardent on its own if US Ardent fails. Both it an the Giant were on the list originally.

Vapours is a mist like villain

Vaudville is for a theme villain dressed in old theatrical costume. This has been done in the comics like DC's The Prankster and members of Clown like Slapstick in Champions.

White Hat like Black Hat was a generic to show good and bad.

White Hunter is like the people of old who went on Safari. However like Kraven in Spiderman or in various film versions they now hunt the most dangerous game. People. Super powered people. And they have the safari costume to show them as people who stand out from the crowd. If you really want to show someone with an ego. Great White Hunter.

White Russian. Apart from being the name of a drink was the name of the faction that supported the Czar in Russia after the Communists try to take over.

Young Turk was the name given to the Turkish army officers who revitalised Turkey around and after the First World War.

I have also built up a new names bank of around 580 odd names. More on this soon.
