Cool characters you'd never use

Ever come up with a character that you thought was REALLY cool, and then realized that you could never use it as either a player or GM? Mine is Vengeance. He's a vicious little so-and-so who uses his powers to hurt people who've hurt him, or just had the nerve to strongly disagree with him.

At the core is a 23+ EGO, an EC with Mind Scan and Clairvoyance that can only be used through the senses of the scanned, and a Multipower with some really vicious Fully Invisible BoECV powers. Though a lot of them are only 1d6 what are you going to do when a mentalist on the other side of the world is going to turn you into a basket case in minutes?

Examples are:

A BoECV RKA that does Body and is penetrating.

Transform from Sane Person to Insane Person.

Mental Illusions that can only create a bad acid trip.

Mind Rape: A compound power of a very small penetrating cumulative Telepathy and a small penetrating EGO drain.

Blinding Headaches: A compound power of Ego Attack and Flash.

Brain Drain: A simple INT drain, but with the right advantages you get enough of it to turn most characters into vegetables long before they figure out what's going on.

It's cool what you can do with BoECV, but I'm just not that mean.

What have you come up with that's neat, but you know that your players/GM would hang from your ankles from a tall place if you tried to use it?

Re: Cool characters you'd never use

As a character-building exercise, I built a character with 'Detect Criminal' with scads of telescopic on it and N-Ray, enough Life Support to survive space (plus no need to sleep), and a suite of Body-damage-dealing Ego-based attacks.

Basically, the character would sit on the moon and kill criminals from there; since the same face of the moon is always towards Earth, he'd just spend all day killing criminals.

Narcissus - a fairly routine character, except for megascale teleport, and megascale Sense Awareness of Narcissus' Mind with Discriminating Analyze and Targeting.

Narc doesn't much object to people being aware of his beauty. However, disturbing the tranquility of his inner contemplation of his own beauty will earn you a personal visit from this wrathful grandson of Zeus and Hera.

Which may be why BoECV IPE characters are rare in the world. ;)

1. Shakram is a character with a 200 pt variable power pool(cosmic).

2. He then Purches a seperate aid 50pts which affects and boosts his vpp pool & characteristics(1000 year fade rate).

3. He uses his power pool to make an aid boost his other aid with a (1000 year fade rate, uncontrolled, autofire).

4. He continues this until his aid has become about 1000, then boosts his power pool for 1000 points.

5. This continues forever, him boosting his aid, which then boosts his charateristics, and again his power pool.

6. He becomes the lord of infinate universes he create with his power pool.

Re: Cool characters you'd never use

Universe man - "Universe man, universe man, size of the entire universe, man."

A simple enough character, has a 0 point physical limitation that he encompasses one of the universes of the multiverse. (Not surprisingly, being that big isn't that much of disadvantage.)

His only power is the ability to "grab" something from another universe (although he didn't have any telescopic or range powers, so his mobile viewpoint was limited to the campaign city) and keep it "safe" within himself. It was easier to this with inanimate matter, but occasionally a lucky roll would allow him to snag something alive.

Universe man was affected by antimatter and other things of a similar nature. Still, the only thing that could truly destroy him was something that could cause realities to collapse.

Fracture: a brick with an Absortion power that feeds into his defenses (when damaged, his skin breaks out with crystaline growths).

Really fun... actually pretty tough... very dynamic game play...

... way too many rolls and too much record-keeping.

Background/History:

Genis-Vell: The Father – Spawned in a test tube and prematurely aged to maturity, Genis struggled to fill the boots of his late father--the boots of Captain Mar-Vell. Therein lied a problem. For Genis inherited his father's greatest gift, the ability of Cosmic Awareness, a oneness with the universe that allows him to know what will happen, what may happen, and what should happen to every living thing in the universe. You might think such knowledge would drive a person mad... and you'd be right.

Ultimately, Genis was seduced by the cosmic beings Epiphany and Entropy, the rogue relatives of the universal embodiment called Eternity, and helped them destroy and recreate the universe, throwing the time stream into chaos as a result. Several of Eternity's other siblings eventually restored Genis' mind and the damage that he had caused.

While he initially appeared to have regained his sanity, Genis immediately had an identical breakdown. His activity became increasingly irrational and he began killing with little prompting and no remorse, continually referring to himself as both insane and a god. His second insanity culminated with Genis threatening war against the most powerful known intergalactic empires. This conflict was stopped by an intervention by the Titanian Eternals and he appeared to be returned to sanity.

Soon thereafter, he embarked on a quest into the future where he encountered his future son, Ely, who turned out to be allied to the Magus. Realizing that a conflict between them would have casualties numbering in the billions, he made a decision to remove his son before he could become a threat. Eventually Genis, shifting through the alternate realities of the shattered time stream, found his newborn son. Acting upon the insane logic that he would inevitably corrupt Ely, Genis-Vell brutally slaughtered his own baby boy while he lay helpless in his crib…

Songbird: The Mother - Taunted by schoolmates and emotionally abandoned by her father after her mother was convicted and jailed for robbery, Melissa Gold ran away from home, adopting her mother's maiden name, Mimi as an alias. Eventually Melissa fell in love with a guy named Mike who took care of her. Tragically the relationship ended when the police found stolen goods in his apartment and he put the blame on Melissa. She went to jail where she met Marian Pouncy who went by the name Poundcakes.

Once released from jail Melissa took on the name of Screaming Mimi and found a place in Poundcake’s team that was called the Grapplers. The Grapplers were a group of female wrestlers with enhanced physical abilities who decided to engage in felonious activities. Screaming Mimi's abilities were vertigo inducing sonics. After unsuccessful bouts with heroes such as the Thing, Quasar III, Giant-Man II and Dazzler, the Grapplers went back to the wrestling circuit full-time but Melissa continued her criminal ways. Eventually the brutal murder of two of the Grapplers by the original Scourge sent Melissa into the world on her own until briefly joining Baron Zemo's Masters of Evil IV.

Not long after leaving the Masters of Evil Melissa would partner with Angar the Screamer and the two eventually fell in love. Then tragedy struck and Angar the Screamer was killed. Mad with grief, Melissa screamed, burning out her power. Immediately afterward, Baron Zemo contacted Melissa once more, and she accepted his offer to join a formative Masters of Evil. Zemo allowed Melissa to be nursed back to health, and his accomplice, the Fixer, gave her new powers via a voice-augmenting harness and high-tech implants in her neck based on technology from the villain Klaw. With her newly-transformed powers, Melissa adopted the identity of Songbird as a member of the Thunderbolts, a new Masters of Evil group posing as super-heroes to win the world's trust while secretly plotting world conquest under Zemo's direction. However, Melissa and most of the other Thunderbolts grew to like their heroic roles. Ultimately, the Thunderbolts turned against Zemo, foiling his attempt at world domination and rescuing the Avengers in the process.

The Thunderbolts subsequently received pardons but with the restriction that they couldn't use their powers. During this time new subtle powers would start to show up for Melissa. Using sonic harmonics she could reach decibel levels beyond human perception to gently influence a person's actions in the direction they were going to go. It is possible that her vocal chords had healed and that they had evolved to give her a different range of natural abilities. Her future as a Thunderbolt and even an Avenger looked promising. Regrettably Melissa’s future was altered by the mad Genis-Vell and her life changed forever.

Not far into the future Melissa Gold became the one true love of Genis-Vell. Together the spawned an heir and heiress to the Power Cosmic: Ely-Vell and Phyla-Vell. In an alternate reality the grandson and granddaughter of Mar-Vell grew into adults under the wing of their mother, their father inexorably absent, yet his evil deeds as palpable to Melissa and the children as if he were there always.

After the birth of her children the Titan Eternal Elysius, mother of Genis, contacted Melissa. Fearing the growing madness of Genis Elysius gathered Melissa and her newborn and absconded with them to Titan. Once there Melissa Ely and Phyla were placed under the Eternals protection. Melissa eventually adjusted to life on Titan watching her children grow to adulthood as Genis’ evil grew to the proportions of a mad god.

Ely-Vell: The Legacy – For safety’s sake Ely and his older sister Phyla were separated before he was old enough to know her. Instead of growing up with a sibling Ely grew up under the tutelage of a host of Eternals. ISAAC, Titan’s Integral Synaptic Anti-Anionic Computer, was charged his education. Eros became a friend and confidant to Ely and Mentor himself watched over the youth as he progressed to manhood. As sheltered and loving as Ely’s childhood was it was ever overshadowed by the grim deeds of his insane father.

Ely became a man, and on the eve of his nineteenth birthday he witnessed the unimaginable horror of his father run amok, destroying millions. Though the grief and shame he felt were unbearable he knew that it was his responsibility to confront his father. He pleaded with his mother for help. Her response was anything but expected. That was when Ely met his elder sister Phyla and received his own pair of Nega-Bands, for Mentor had foreseen this day and made special preparations for it’s resolution. Upon donning the Nega-Bands Ely came into the full power of his birthright. Cosmic energy coursed through his body and exploded from his throat as a celestial chorus that heralded his coming of age across the universe. Thus Echo was born.

The Power Cosmic now coursed through Echo’s being. The incredible loss of his voice was coupled with a galactic symphony that thundered within his mind and ears, rendering him functionally deaf. But Echo was no longer bound by the confines of his physical being and his inheritance of Cosmic Awareness more than compensated for his losses.

Together with his family Echo sought out the tempestuous Genis in hopes of restraining his onslaught on humanity. What he, his mother Songbird, her mother-in-law Elysius and his newly discovered sister Phyla uncovered was a mad god. But more than that, they discovered the cause of Genis’ madness. Through the power of his Cosmic Awareness Echo was able to pierce the convoluted veil weaved by Epiphany and Entropy as they tainted Genis’ mind from beyond reality. Though the true villain stood revealed it was too late to stop the raving Genis. However, the moment of synergy that brought him face to face with a family he’d lost to his madness lent clarity to Genis that, if only briefly, pierced his insanity. Through his Cosmic Awareness Genis perceived the billions that would die should he and Echo ever come to blows. Then, before there could be an altercation, before even Epiphany and Entropy could react and reassert their control, Genis torn by the pain he’d caused and determined a remedy for it all. He would remake the universe… again. And thus it was done. But this time the shocking recognition of his children derailed Genis’ plans and they were saved, sucked into the new reality where they remain today.

Personality/Motivation: Echo is on a quest to clear the besmirched name of his father. Unfortunately, only the occasional celestial being has any memory of Genis’ transgressions. So Echo, still struggling with his powers, has become the self appointed protector of Earth. Echo’s understanding of his grandfather’s role as Protector of the Universe and the failure of his father to live up to that legacy has kept him from confronting his own birthright and taking to the stars.

Quote:

(Echo’s being is constantly bombarded by the galactic symphony. As a result he has lost all normal hearing and is unable to utter a word lest the Celestial Choir manifest. Fortunately, Echo’s Cosmic Awareness allows him to communicate normally)

Powers/Tactics: Echo’s powers are evolving. At this stage in his evolution he has taken a page from his mother’s book and uses the Celestial Choir to manifest solid-sound constructs, from walls, objects and shields of sound to fully animated and independent solid-sound creatures that reflect reality or even his imagination. In addition to the more obvious manifestations the Cosmic Choir allows Echo to fly and fire cosmically enhanced sonic blasts.

Echo is also wears his grandfather’s Nega-Bands. The Nega-Bands convert psionic energy stored within Echo’s cells into photonic energy allowing him to enhance his own physique (and others) and the Cosmic Choir as well as the power of interstellar flight and the ability to survive unprotected in space. They also allow Echo to switch open a portal to the Negative Zone.

Appearance: Echo is a well-built, white male with silver hair and eyes that reflect the stars. As Echo he wears a Kree Captain’s uniform (sans helmet) in honor of the good man his grandfather was and as a constant reminder of the madness that runs in his blood. When manifesting the Cosmic Choir he becomes one with the universe and celestial bodies fill the shadows of his aspect.

As Ely, the Nega-Bands allow him to manifest whatever passes as appropriate fashion. In his normal form his hair is brown. However, he must conceal his eyes with some form of eyewear due to their unusual special qualities.

Re: Cool characters you'd never use

My character Crisis has never actually seen play, and I doubt he ever will. He's an Ultra-Boy homage, and in most groups that doesn't work very well. He can be stronger than the brick, or more durable, or faster than the speedster, etc. Even though it's not all at the same time, the potential for toe-stepping and resentment is too strong. (In a cosmic game it might work better.)

Besides, the word Crisis has become associated with some pretty ugly and negative storylines recently, so I might change it if he ever does see game time.

Re: Cool characters you'd never use

One player character I had to deep six was Epicenter -- an energy projector with a powerful explosion EB of force that would tend to destroy everything around him. Player insisted he could make the character work by getting the bad guys to pile on him and setting off his power, but the character had a 14- reputation for being an "explosive superhero." After I explained that mooks may be kinda slow and fiercely loyal, but they certainly aren't suicidal morons, he decided to play something else...

My wife is actually playing a minor version of this. She has an 11d6 attack with her 55 Strength (1d6 less than the damage of the other Brick in the group), slightly-below average Dexterity for the campaign (21), and defenses that are 2 points less than the other Brick. However, she has a "Heroic" multipower with the following:

15 Heroic Feats: Multipower, 15-point reserve

1u Heroic Resilience: Armor (4 PD/4 ED), Hardened (+1/4) (15 Active Points)

1u Heroic Strength: +10 STR, Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2) (15 Active Points); No Figured Characteristics (-1/2)

1u Heroic Agility: +5 DEX (15 Active Points); No Figured Characteristics (-1/2)

1u Hypersonic Flight: Flight 5", MegaScale (1" = 1 km; +1/4), Can Be Scaled Down 1" = 100m (+1/4) (15 Active Points)

So, she can be the toughest character, or the strongest character, or more dexterous than anyone except the speedster...but not all at the same time. So far, it's worked out pretty well. The other brick (actually a 40 STR Brick with Martial Arts) has his own niche due to various immunities from Life Support and his martial maneuvers, the energy projector has range and a variety of attacks in her multipower, and the speedster is incredibly fast (33 Dex, 7 SPD, but only 9d6 attacks).

Getting back to the topic...I once allowed a character in my game who was a former cop. His main power? BODY Drain. He'd tell a villain to stop. If the bad guy didn't stop, he'd hit them with the BODY drain and repeat his request. If they still didn't stop - he'd repeat the process until the villain was dead. When people tried to label him a killer, he'd reply that it was no different from a cop shooting someone...

Re: Cool characters you'd never use

Here are some of my recent creations that never got to see any significant play time.

Characters I have written up for fun but know they would give the GM a migraine...

Shade - Has demonic powers diguised as mutant and mental abilities. Has the ability of Possession which makes him unplayable to many GMs I have gamed with.

Sinistral - Has the ability to to become a flawed Bizarro-like copy of other supers, except he appears as a mirror image (i.e. a left handed copy). Whenever possible, the sfx of his powers are the opposite of those he copies (a fire blast would be an ice blast, a darkness field would be a field of blinding light, ect.). Unuseable to many GMs I have played with as he is built with a Multiform VPP.

Characters which I thought were playable but a GM disagreed...

Crazy Jack - A hero with multiple personalities. Each personality had a different form and powers (built with a Multiform Multipower). A random roll at the beginning of each gaming session would determine what personality (and form) was currently dominant.

Cerberus - A were-wolf like character with a nomal human form, three wolf/ human hybrid forms (via Duplication), and massive three-headed wolf form (bought as a second Duplication using the ruled for creating creatures with multiple heads).

Re: Cool characters you'd never use

Jake the Troll - one of the characters I do WWYCD threads with, but unlikely to ever atually be played. He's a norse changeling who got imprinted on a zygote in a fertility clinic: as a consequence, there wasn't enough human mana in the area to successfully bond to. He came out as an actual troll, as opposed to a human lookalike. But he was born from a human womb, making him fully human yet fully supernatural.

I don't ever stat him up, because he's designed to be played in a campaign where power levels aren't an issue; more of an "eerie indiana" style, where it's relatively gentle wierdness, as opposed to 4-color combat. When issues do come up, it's assumed that he has as much power as he needs, as long as it can be covered by his SFX: Troll God.

Re: Cool characters you'd never use

Sadly, I'm afraid that the majority of my characters never see actual play time... as much to do with how many of them I come up with as the fact that they're actually unplayable for one reason or another.

However, I think my prime example is James Jonathon. His family is the last of a dwindling line of priests of an ancient order with a gift that allows them to become, literally, the best at whatever it is they do.

He started out as a gun bunny, and in that form is pretty playable. But after a variety of events in his storyline, he ended up becoming the first Defender in generations; rather than dedicating himself to mastering gunfighting, he 'retooled' his skills to the broader duty of protecting people.

The problem with this is that he'd probably have ended up looking a lot like the aforementioned Crisis in the end; able, with some focus, to outperform any one character at any one thing they could do.

Re: Cool characters you'd never use

Another character I thought up was back in my teenage years, and it reflects my maturity at the time. When I thought seriously about Cyclops and his eye beams, and his brother what's-his-face with the beams coming out of his chest I thought, "How do those powers know where to come out? What arbitrary quirk of genetics dictates where those beams come out? And why energy beams?"

The inevitable result was The Brown Torpedo, who instead of having a superpowered set of eyes or chest cavity had a superpowered digestive tract. For some odd reason no GM has ever allowed me to actually PLAY this character. I add that this was done decades before Mystery Men was made into a film, and I never did think to do a continuous does knockback flash vs. hearing.

All of the powers were bought with Complex Gestures (bend over and drop them) and Concentration to 1/2 DCV. Maybe you could say that it should be 0 DCV, but when a guy with a reputation for poo flinging drops his pants my first instinct would be to flinch. The limitations were bought off with an OIF battlesuit that had poo tubes for redirecting the blasts. It also had afterburners for a "Light a Fart" superleap and flight ability.

Other powers were a no range NND vs. Sealed Breathing that did BODY with a cone AOE (silent but deadly), an RKA (that one had chunks), and a Sticky Entangle (best not contemplated).

He had a massive bonus to his PRE strictly for the purpose of making PRE attacks based on the threat of using his powers.
