When I needed to provide some small states in Europe for a couple of story lines for my campaign, a little research on Romania on Wikipedia led to the discovery of many ethnic or former historical divisions. I borrowed some of the names or archaic spellings of them as well as creating a fictional name and now in place of Romania there are the states of Banat, Budjak, Moldavana, Oltenia, Transylvania and Valahia. Just something you may want to consider as a resource for names for your state is using historical or ethnic divisions of current states.
