Champions of Infinity Campaign and RPG Aid!

The Doctor

Recommended Posts

It's been quite some time since I was on the boards, lots of familiar faces and lots of new ones. The traffic on the site seems down since the "Glory Days!", but I see tons of great info being exchanged. To that effort I was hoping our RPG group can contribute a new thread dealing with our upcoming Champions game. It is my first endeavor since we wrapped up our Hero Talk campaign in 2009.

This new game is the same game world 5 years later, after the "Goldberg Security Initiative" was passed in the United States.

The Goldberg Initiative is a limitation on the role Meta-humans can play in government and government Agencies. It basically revokes the Police Powers for all Super Groups under the stated notion that super powers are in essence "Weapons of Mass Destruction" and that the concerted use of Homo Superior abilities is incapable of being regulated and was ruled paramount to terrorism by a Jeffrey Andeavers lead Senate Committee. Meta-humans are still allowed to fight crime and maintain roles in Government Agencies, but only one sanctioned meta is allowed per one million residents and government agencies are only allowed one per branch. This doesn't seem like much of a problem until you realize New York has over twelve million people and the Primus branch has one Meta(Sensation).....no Silver Avengers or Golden Avengers, just sensation and mooks with guns. The freelance superhero sanctions are on one year renewals from the ultra covert government agency F.A.S.E.

Now none of this seems to bad until you realize that one in every five thousand people has some mild mutation, one in every fifteen thousand has an actual power, but one in every fifty thousand is a full powered meta-criminal. Making the ratio of bad guys to registered good guys an average of twenty to one.

What is the punishment for Unsanctioned Superheroes? If capture you are tried for terrorism and willful intent and or use of a weapon of Mass Destruction. Prison sentences can range from 5 to 150 years and can be multiplied for repeated offenders. There is a way to walk away from your sentence. Doctor Andeavers left an "easy out" for those so inclined, first time offenders can be released after 6 months in a new meta parole system where the offending hero wears a locator beacon with power monitoring functions for the remainder of their sentence.

Re: Champions of Infinity Campaign and RPG Aid!

The actual intent of this is to Chronicle the happenings of the game as it unfolds and if anyone sees something they like it's at their disposal. Originally I built a free website for the campaign at http://champions2015.webs.com and then decided to invest a couple bucks into something that wasn't going to run out of space. That site isn't online yet so we are still currently defaulting at champions 2015.

Where I am picking up in the game is a series of short stories about a group of heroes that gets together under the confines of the current campaign

to help set the world tone so the pcs hit the ground running. Before I get to the stories though we are playing a set of brush up pre-adventures as the Ravenswood class of 1996. We have two new gamers in the group and the story of the class of 1996 is so tragic that there is practically no way to derail a mini-campaign at Ravenswood in the 90's. I also have brief character Bios for the 96ers on our website for those interested. I will also upload pics and character sheets for this thread.

First thought: It looks like the authorities, and would-be superheroes, are going to be seriously hamstrung in comparison to the super-criminals. Law-enforcement likely won't have the firepower to counter them, and freelance heroes face severe penalties if they even lob an energy-bolt at a bank robber.

Do I have that right, and is that your intent?

Re: Champions of Infinity Campaign and RPG Aid!

Well, this is the back side of a 4 and 1/2 year campaign, rather than start over. In order to keep the same characters and places that everyone loves. There has too be a passage of time, a change of the guard and the rules by which we operate have to change in order for people to evaluate each situation as new. Now some of the favorite pc's and npc's have reacted differently to these events and there has been a mass exodus to canada, by some of the more motivated heroes.

In short....yes, that is exactly the point. This however is not the point at which we will game. That's why we are erecting a new site for this chronicle championsofinfinity.com and I'm writing three prequel stories and a seemingly unrelated Ravenswood pre-game.

Great stuff, Doc.

Which reminds me, on a unrelated topic, what do you think of DALCYB-1's background (seeing that your a whovian, and proud of it darn it...).

It's in the Enimies of The TED thread.

steriaca,

I hadn't gotten to it yet, but after reading the entire thread I whole heartily approve of the combination and ingenuity it took to create it. Rep for Major Tom and you as well my friend for pointing it out.

Re: Champions of Infinity Campaign and RPG Aid!

The big reveal is actual at the end of the fourth short stories I'm writing. The stories follow lives of a group that tries to buck the trend and form a heroic group and at the end of fourth story. The META RAPTURE!! I know it sounds ridiculous, but all the noble and worth are pulled up to heaven leaving behind the neutral and the evil. When I say worthy I mean the young and pure as well, so if there is a young meta with evil in his heart he stays and the pure ones are gone. It seems a little dark, but it gives us a campaign on the precipice of change. How will that happen who will initiate it and what direction? The other part is that if all the worthy are gone and you see someone that was supposed to be a really great person, what did they do to still be here? Where did all the worthy go anyway? Lot's of questions and a main stream plot to go along with it.

The Meta Rapture!!(Remember only the meta humans are affected)

Extremly intresting. There can be tons of explnations for this event. Some are:

1) Ailens have colected the worthy metas because thay need there powers/abilities, AND there morals for a grand fight to save the universe/multiverse/all of existance.

2) God needs them to fight The Devil durring The Last War (aka Armagetion), which is COMMING SOON.

3) It is a grand trick by a wickid time travler looking for brainwashed metapowered solders. Somehow the brainwashing works better on 'worthy' metas.

4) This is not a true 'rapture'...all the 'worthy' metas left on an Earth built spaceship, as thay were weary of all the fighting (basicly think Frodo at the end of the LotR book, enmass.).

5) There not gone...someone made the world think thay are gone in a rapture-like event.

Of course, the truth is...

none of my buisness :)

Or it could be something horrendously and truly apocalyptic, like what happened in the movie Knowing.

In the case of something like that -- and if you were an alien who wanted to ensure that those you chose

to rescue had the best chance to survive wherever you relocated them to -- you'd pick those with special

abilities and powers (if for no other reason than to protect any normal people you might've decided to

rescue as well).

Sounds like the campaign is transitioning from a Silver Age mentality to Iron Age or beyond. So the Aliens took all of the goody two shoe supers like Superman. They left behind the ones that were neutral or with evil in their hearts. So Batman Stays with the Punisher. Spidey goes, Hulk stays etc. All of the Dark Heroes and Heroines all saying good riddance, don't let the ladder to "heaven" bump your butt on the way out. It would also be interesting if some "Noble Villains" also were Raptured along with the Heroes. Perhaps some of the goodies choose to stay behind by focusing on all of their internalized hatreds during the rapture. Could the whole thing be staged by the goodie Scientific types, who became fedup with how the governments were treating them. So they decide to stage "The Rapture" so they could move to another planet to start over away from the prejudices of non powered people.

Also any of my PC's would be looking into this "Rapture" as being hoax. That perhaps all of the best Heroes were being kidnapped. I mean some hero had to have communication going with their base computer. Some person had to have sent some drone or probe into the white light the heroes were being sucked into.

We are transitioning as a group. The last game was centered around pc's with a silver age flair and through job offers, moves and inclination changes the game in order to maintain viability has to adjust or die.

Re: Champions of Infinity Campaign and RPG Aid!

The previous campaign started Bronze (The Judas Contract was a stated inspiration) and transitioned to Iron, mainly due to the decisions made by the PCs.

In this follow-up campaign, we get to face the reality we largely created. Flinching is optional.

Although the meta-rapture that happens between the campaigns seems to be a completely independent variable. I'll freely admit that I don't have a good handle on it. Yet.

Re: Champions of Infinity Campaign and RPG Aid!

If there's any mysticism or wuxia. Even if the hero could pass a tetrino test(which detects the amount of faster than light energy life particles your body absorbs every second), it could literally turn into a which hunt. In modern day society if someone could leap 50 feet no matter how they explained it. The benchmarks they have surpassed by leaps and bounds are frightening.

Re: Champions of Infinity Campaign and RPG Aid!

For the setting purposes, supernatural abilities are all powered by tetrino flow.

The "Mutant signature" disad means you're pulling tetrinos all the time, but doing anything that surpasses normal human abilities means you're almost certainly pulling them for the duration of the action (and the following recoveries).

Of course, you can alway take a specialized "invisible power effects" adder if you've got a subtle power that you want to keep as a hole card.

sounds like that episode of Young Justice where all the adults were sent to a different universe by some badguys. If I had a character in this campaign I would definitely be thinking along those lines (as well as suspecting the government of being involved in this somehow).

Re: Champions of Infinity Campaign and RPG Aid!

Actually I will be posting the first of my short stories about my games transition group. Led by the Night Marshal from the Ravenswood book. It should help to ease people into the setting while giving some depth into some of the alternate ways and types of people that still managed to hero. I would have it out today, but I have to get someone to edit for me. Should be posted tomorrow.

This is the first of the four stories leading to the campaign. The story starts off with the Night Marshall at slightly reticent and reflecting on his life. This tale leads into the next, but there will be a passage of time in between. It is also not the final copy, but it is so close I wanted to post it.

Hope you enjoy and feel free to comment

  • 1 year later...

We just entered the third month of the campaign.

I would like to thank everyone that gave advice and or criticism to the idea of the meta rapture and I took it all in and made the needed adjustments.

We started off a year and a half after the meta rapture with a couple of the heroes being commissioned by the two meta religious groups:  The Jadye and the Dark.  Both of these groups religions are based upon the end of the world.

The Jadye believe it is the end of days and that there will be another rapture and are working to prove themselves worthy of the next and final rapture before the end of the world

The Dark believe that now that the rapture has happened and that they will have a better position in what ever happens after the end in hell or purgatory as a reward for their contribution to the end of all things.

The PCs were contracted as neutrals by both factions in finding a religious artifact known only as the Judas Purse.  The Purse is a calf skinned coin sack supposed containing the 30 pieces of silver that Judas received for betraying Jesus.  As is commonly portrayed in TV and folk lore Judas hung him self shortly after his betrayal and the sack went missing.  The Judas purse is a cursed item of insurmountable power.  Each coin from the purse has the power to change reality, but at an unknown cost.
