In terms of Republican vs. Democrat, I self-identify as "Non-binary". Which is a more polite way of saying "A pox on both their [REDACTED] houses".

I am in no way trying to say that both Parties are equally corrupt, nor that both are equally responsible for the mess we Americans find ourselves in here on 1 JAN 2021. But I'm not convinced that either Party has all the answers, and I am certainly not convinced that either Party gives the slightest fraction of a damn about my welfare or what I want or need.

I've often joked that "Politics" is best understood if you break the word down into its components: "poly-" meaning "many" and "ticks" meaning "bloodsucking invertebrates". I'm only about half-kidding on that one, as it turns out.

I feel like the Two-Party false dichotomy we've come to revere here in the USA is responsible for most of our country's problems. The whole political process has become an exercise in escalation. You send us some wacko from the fringes out on the Right, we counter with someone from even further out on the Left. This polarization makes it increasingly impossible not only for anyone to get anything done, but even for the two sides to talk to each other. Meanwhile I sit here somewhere near the political Center and wonder who's speaking for me. I don't have an answer to that question.

So I do what I can do. I live my life. I go to work (with the full realization that I'm damn lucky to have a decent job) and I wear my mask and I make dinner and I take out the garbage and I read to my kids. All the political stuff is way too removed from my daily life--Washington DC might as well be on Uranus. All I can do is what I can do. Stay informed, vote when given the opportunity, support good people doing their best to lead locally. And I try to teach my kids--all 200 or so of 'em--to be good and decent humans.

The politicians will do what they will do for their own reasons and for their own benefit. I can't worry about all of that. I can only worry about me.

I've progressed sufficiently for one day, I suppose. As you were, and thanks for listening.

Some of my family and friends had a better year this year than they did in the years before, and I was in a better place mental health wise than I was a few years ago...which is I know the opposite of most folks. And I feel a bit guilty about that, and worried for a return to some bad things. So I'm hoping 2021 is better for MORE people, my friends, family, and self included.

And, I really want certain political things to move on but that's for another thread

Agreed.  Although I think Diana's character is mostly brought out by Gal Gadot's acting and Patty Jenkins direction...far more than Snyder.  He was just (successfully) playing off that portrayal which was already in the can when JL was being made.

While I agree that establishing Diana as having sat out most of a century of war and injustice so she could be unknown to the world in BvS is problematic, I think Snyder did actually "get" Wonder Woman, better than he did Superman and Batman in fact. She's portrayed as smart, capable, compassionate, courageous to the point of fearlessness, and ultimately willing to do what needs doing even if she'd rather be elsewhere. She was easily the best part of her debut movie. And I have the distinct feeling that every frame of film from Justice League that objectified Diana or played her for laughs was Whedon's doing rather than Snyder's.

The new year is generally just another day to me...with the added complication of remembering to write the correct year when I sign something the first few times.

Ohlmin, the master from the Slaver's Guild in the Guardian of the Flame series. A thoroughly vile person if you have any of our world's current Western civilization ethical standards concerning slavery, rape, child abuse, abusing women, casual cruelty, physical torture, mental torture, intentionally maiming people, and/or intentionally triggering active shooting wars between nations in order to line your own pockets.

He's the kind of guy who you can compare to Hitler and accidentally find yourself thinking, "You know, in comparison, Hitler was a pretty nice guy."
