  1. The sound of a black hole
  2. I only tried FASERIP once, and that was just character creation. I didn't like the process. I ended up with an Average Joe with an alternate identity. The alternate identity also turned out to be an Average Joe for the most part, except with Aunt May level strength. I was hoping to make some kind of swordsman, but the rolls weren't with me. One of my friends got the roll for a sword with a special ability; I admit to being jealous about that. He was just goofing off, so he decided the sword's special ability was that it could stick to the wall.
  3. My biggest hang-up about HERO is how slow combat can get. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in this, and a lot of potential players can likewise get turned off on the system. Speeding up combat will help new players get into the system more easily. You can add more combat options as the players get more comfortable with the game. The martial arts system in HERO is definitely among the best, if not the best. Another is expectations. HERO can simulate any type of genre, but most people associate it with superheroes. If you can show new people how you can run a fantasy/espionage/sci-fi, etc. game using HERO, more people will appreciate it.
  4. Okay, let's get this straight. When you're playing a solo game, you're playing BY yourself. Playing WITH yourself means something else entirely.
  5. Today my house and 47 others lost power for most of the day. Some idiot was chopping down trees, and one of them fell on the power lines. At least the lights came back on at 5 pm instead of the 8 pm (originally 1:30 pm) estimate. I wouldn't have been surprised if the repair crew had worked through the night.
  6. People will still play other systems that are popular. The fans of those systems aren't going away anytime soon. One D&D seems to be made solely for online games. But there are too many people who prefer playing face to face, so that type of gaming won't go away. And I ran a solo game today because my area lost power for most of the day. That's one advantage tabletop rpgs have over online games: You can still play when the lights go out.
  7. Basic Fantasy is my go-to rpg at this time. I just played a solo game when the lights were out in my area today. I also wrote up a conversion from MERP, which was my go-to rpg when I was in college.
  8. Selections from Mahler's Song of the Earth
  9. I prefer Reaper Dark Heaven Legends. The metal miniatures are more realistic, and they come with integral bases (I can never overstate my loathing of slotta bases).
  10. Why not? Maybe someone can run it in a game store or convention to let people try it out.
  11. My near-future campaign doesn't have any aliens, so the players speak whatever languages are native to them. In a far-future spacefaring campaign, I would assume some kind of trade language would be used to allow communication between different species. If English still exists at the time, it will have evolved to something different from the English we speak today.
  12. Are we witnessing Betelgeuse's death throes?
  13. In all fairness, Garcia and Coric are not rookies. They may not currently be in the top tiers of the sport, but they have years of experience under their belts.
  14. I was about to post that last video as a counterpoint, not to bash the upcoming product. You beat me to it. For my part, I have no interest in this. I found long ago that the d20 system wasn't for me, and I never got into 3.5e or later editions. So I haven't been paying much attention to whatever WOTC produces. Of course, I have seen the hype about this product, and Baron de Ropp's video is the first negative response so far. But discussion is a good thing, so people can think about whether or not to buy into this thing.
  15. There are so many companies offering better - and cheaper -- miniatures than GW. Reaper sells both plastic and metal miniatures representing different genres. Copplestone Casting (a UK-based company) also sells miniatures for different genres. Wizkids only offers plastic fantasy miniatures, but the miniatures look good and are already primed. Iron Wind Metals sells miniatures from the old Ral Partha line. Pulp Alley sells miniatures meant for a Pulp-era game. There are also a lot of companies that sell historical miniatures.
  16. Has anyone considered offering a tutorial on HERO games? Nothing fancy, just a simple scenario to show how the basic rules work. Have a few pre-generated characters so people can start playing right away. Maybe you can find new players that way.
  17. If something is in burger form, it's way past the point of healing.
  18. I haven't played or run HERO in a long time. Part of the problem is that I some of my players expect a superhero campaign when they hear about the HERO system, and I have no interest in that genre. I may do a one-shot fantasy or modern-day game just to give players a better idea of how the mechanics work, especially combat. I'd use the basic maneuvers listed in the core book, but nothing from the supplements. Another reason is that my friends and I only play sporadically if at all, so I tend to prefer rules-light systems for my one-shot sessions.
