I have used Classic Traveller in my hard science fiction campaign. If you stick to just the core rules, the system is rules-light and straightforward, perfect for a one-shot game.

It's definitely nice to have that type of versatility. That said, I found the KISS principle to work best with new players. Adding too many things all at once only confuses people new to the game. The biggest problem I've encountered is that many people equate the HERO System with Champions. If you're going to run a superhero game, it's not an issue. But if you're running a different genre, some players won't be very happy.

I've been watching the Colosseum miniseries on History Channel, as well as some of the Shark Week specials on Discovery Channel.

I didn't know Peter Cushing was a wargamer. He played H. G. Wells' Little Wars. There is one sexist quote from the book (and another historically dubious one as well), but otherwise, the video is inoffensive.
