WHAT?

To follow up on my last post, college hockey in Minnesota IS a big deal. Last week Minnesota played an epic duel against the top team in the country, Notre Dame. The goaltending was really good quality, and regulation ended scoreless. (Apparently this is very rare at that level, to an "almost never happens" degree of rare.) The Gophers then scored a spectacular goal with a minute and a half left in overtime to secure the upset win and help them position for the Big Ten playoffs.
 
And the arena was packed.

Yeah, my dad and me actually broke down and watched a quarter or so of the Pro Bowl.  First time me watching football this season, first time either of us has watched a Pro Bowl moment in a decade and a half.

If the NFL disintegrated over a labor dispute, the only owner I'd feel any sympathy for is the stockholders of Green Bay Packers, Inc.  For all the others ... well, let's just say I think the Romanovs got off waaaaayyyy too easy back in 1917-18, and the NFL league office and ownership are the same sort of despots as the Czars were.

The figure skating competitors get into a massive pie fight, leaving whipped cream and meringue all over the rink. In the chaos, the Japanese win gold and we discover this was all inspired by an unpublished episode of Yuri on Ice!.  (Or is that Yaoi on Ice!?)

Michael Dunn was an amazing talent all round. The character of Doctor Loveless was literally built around him, and I can't imagine anyone else in the part.

Edit: Specifically, a lot of people jumped in their cars and sped onto the roads, either forming a traffic jam or running red lights in their panic. At least one acquaintance of ours was literally flipping tables in her home (regardless of whatever was on them) to frantically build some sort of shelter. I don't know if the panic actually killed anyone but it's entirely possible. 
 
It it would be funny, except that I had to explain to the kids what all the fuss was about. And the fact that the threat exists in the first place.

I'd like to go out more, but the drones are following my every move.  The worst ones are the ones you can't see or hear.  I figure I'll have the auxiliary tunnel finished by the end of CY 2019.  I do need to work on the seismometer jammer thing, but that's an easy tech, I think.

The rubber science bothers me less than the main thing that bugs me -- Poe Dameron fouling up everything that can conceivably be fouled up. And that unsettling situation may be part of the point of the movie.
 
Poe does not learn from his mistakes. When he fouls up he refuses to accept responsibility, but insists that he can react to the situation effectively even though he doesn't really understand his situation. He is unclear on the very objective -- instead of understanding that the Resistance needs to salvage and preserve whatever resources they can so they can rebuild and regroup out of the First Order's reach, Poe insists that damaging the First Order's easily-replaceable military assets is a primary goal. Even sitting him down, rebuking him, and trying to make him understand the situation does no good. He insists he knows more than seasoned veteran leaders like Leia. The press has described him as a prime example of toxic masculinity. And although he doesn't say anything outright that he thinks he knows best for that reason, it's easy to see the connection.
 
Why does anyone listen to Poe?

Mark has an extraordinary gift for voices. And is a much better actor than anyone gives him credit for.
 
He is also very smart. He saw what stardom was doing to his friends and wanted no part of it. He lives the life he wants to live.

The Trolley problem apparently refers to something from Ethics, that has become relevant for selfdriving cars once again.

Someone please explain the Vegas Golden Knights. They assembled a team of castoffs and minor-league veterans and are sitting, right now, as the top seed in the Western Conference if the playoffs were to start tonight. Much as I've enjoyed watching their amazing journey, the only way I can think of that they're doing it is if 30 other teams gad been horrible judges of talent.

I've always thought the anti-vaxxers were just looking for something to blame besides bad genetic luck for autism.  The raw water people are just stupid.
