If it followed the comic book story line, I would be inclined to agree with you. From the bits about the movie that have been released so far, this sounds different. And Marvel Studios has built up enough of a track record for me give them the benefit of the doubt until I see otherwise.

Marvel television does seem to be a little more representative of East Asians than their movies, notably Melinda May in Agents of SHIELD. At least we got Helen Cho in Age of Ultron.

But Yinsen and the Mandarin are tricky cases. Keeping the wartime arms-supplier connection for Tony Stark meant moving his origin from Vietnam to Afghanistan, so the ethnic change made sense. As for the Mandarin, I strongly suspect Marvel was concerned over offending and alienating that big Chinese moviegoing revenue stream.

Absolutely agree. Strange's Cloak of Levitation serves a practical purpose. Even in recent comics, the Cloak lets him fly without expending any of his personal magic power. And Strange has even used it offensively a number of times, to blind or bind opponents.

As for the Eye of Agamotto (that's the amulet he wears -- the Orb of Agamotto is that big crystal ball he views the Multiverse in), IMHO it's one of the coolest, most distinctive identifying gimmicks in comics. It just wouldn't be Dr. Strange without it.

Age of Ultron did explain Vision's cape, in a brief and delightfully subtle way. While he's talking to Thor after he calms down, you see him glance down at Thor's cape; then Vision's own body morphs a matching accouterment. He obviously liked the fashion statement.

Well, we've seen Marvel take two approaches to the cloak/cape on their heroes. Thor's is all practical. I remember watching a making-of video for the first Thor movie, in which the costume designer (the great Alexandra Byrne) described developing a cape that would look and move like the one in Thor's comics. That seemed to turn out quite well. Then we have Vision's largely CGI cape in Age of Ultron, which can of course move any way they need it too. Personally I found it a little distracting at times, although nowhere near as obnoxious as Spawn's.   Superman's cape in Man of Steel, and the trailers for Dawn of Justice, is often CGI, but IMO works most of the time. So I don't expect that element of Dr. Strange to be problematic.

And strictly speaking, Strange's classic outfit is Sixties.

I am sure, if DC does a Shazam movie, he will be an orphan, which he is, who was abused by his drugged out parents who OD'd, and the orphanage he is in will be run by the equivalent of Fagan.

I read once that the creator of the original Captain wanted to call him "Captain Thunder," but the editor thought that name would be too frightening to children.

Would have been a cool-sounding modern rebrand, though.

If that's still the magic word he speaks to change from super to mortal, wouldn't that be kind of awkward?

It's a bit of a middle finger to DC, too, since they're developing a movie starring the hero they can't publically call Captain Marvel.

I guess when the character's history goes back twenty-five years before that. The majority of villains identified with Spidey's "rogues gallery" debuted during the first decade of his title: Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Kraven the Hunter, Sandman, the Lizard, Mysterio, the Scorpion, Electro, the Vulture, the Rhino... I'm sure I'm forgetting someone.

Even in 1988 when Venom debuted, his style foreshadowed the "Iron Age" of comics, which lots of longer-term fans view as "post-classic." (Personally I despise the character, but that's irrelevant to this discussion.)

Personally, I'm fine with Fox retaining the X-characters. Those titles have practically been their own continuity within the Marvel Comics universe for decades, not really meshing with the rest of the setting. But their other super-properties easily could, and IMHO should be integrated into the MCU.

Cinematic Ultron has been a polarizing villain for a lot of people. Some fans really wanted a cold, menacing, "robotic" Ultron more reminiscent of the comics. Despite that being a type of villain we've seen literally thousands of times before... and complained about in other Marvel movies. I'm one of those who likes the sarcastic, arrogant, childish Ultron from the movie. It's a fresh take that interested and entertained me more.
