  3. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... Okay tonight was Conan night. The Party: Valarias: Nobleman/soldier of Corinthia Athicus: Soldier of Corinthia Feng: Scholar from the east Busec: Plains Nomad Zum: islander barbarian We were following Busec because his goddess Ishtar kept telling him his love was in the west. Follow the Setting Sun. After a few days we arrive in a forest. Feng has been unhappy with this from the start. He keeps telling us that the beautiful female voice Busec hears is a witch and we should be weary. OOC I make comment about finding a gingerbread house. Finally we burst into a clearing and find a great big stone house, along with Busec's Stolen (tethered outside the house with a few other horses) Feng: This is the witch's hut! GM: "Outside the door of the hut you see a cougar." Athicus (ooc): A cat or an older woman looking for younger men? * * * Earlier, Feng checks knowledge: religion to find out about Ishtar GM: its a limited area religion with some orgiastic rituals Athicus and Valarias: "We convert!" * * * After the witch surrenders (And Valarias knocks her unconscious) we go check on Feng, who was shot by an enscorcelled Busec. Busec rushes into the hut. As the plainsman comes out Valarias says, "Okay, we'll force her to heal Feng and Zum and then take her to the next town." Busec looks nervous, "She controlled my mind, had me shoot a brother in arms...I extracted justice." Valarias: "You killed her?" Busec: "Justice is very complicated where I come from."
  4. Re: What Fantasy/Sci-Fi book have you just finished? Please rate it... I just finished The Vast White By Jason Walters, published by Blackwyrm Games. It took two tries to read it. But once I got going I couldn't stop until I had finished it. It is part one of a series and I will be hoping to see more. The book is written in a first person narrative (if I remember my lit courses correctly) of the chronicler of a mercenary company involved in a desert battle. It is a fantasy realm but beyond a few terms here and there it reads very contemporary. The "author" of the records is a loquacious, if hard bitten, merc and he sets a very...let's say, casual tone for his record keeping, often insulting the reader directly (as the only readers would be bureaucrats) and himself occasionally. There are a nice mix of characters and personalities, there's action and there's violence, and humor. The book never loses it's voice and once I grew accustomed to it, I found I liked the chronicler very much. It's not a great tome, clocking in at exactly 100 pages with about 9 pages of glossary; so it's a quick read. I hope to see the next installment soon.
  5. Re: A Thread for Random Musings So I went by the old WaMu Jp Morgan Chase branch today to see my friends and deposit some birthday money. My buddy Corby was recently chosen to be the assistant manager (after they fired Carla) and he was heading out on his way home. I asked how everything was going, sounds like the transition will be very smooth for the customers (if all goes according to plan and it rarely does). I asked how the new job was treating him. That was a different story. My former manager apparently has heart trouble (if I was really petty and vindictive I would say I was shocked she had one, but I'm only marginally petty and vindictive so this sentence will have to do) she's not allowed to drive while they do tests and since she lives 40 miles away she hasn't been to work in a week. And they've not hired a new Personal Finance Representative (New Accounts Person) to take Corby's place. He's been running the show, opening all the new accounts (and the college students are back in town) and has yet to actually become the assistant manager. Then I went in and talked with my former co-workers and they were telling me how the customers who don't really know what's going down have been coming in and worried that there would be a freeze on their funds or something and a few who've threatened legal action (or at least claimed they would hold the tellers personally responsible - whatever that means). It's kind of sad and I feel a bit guilty about how happy I am not to be going through that. It takes a bit of the edge off of my employment situation anyway.

  8. Re: NGD Scenes from a Hat Once he has the fishnets and Joe Q dead he's content. He holds and election and doesn't put his name on the ballot. Taking a small percentage of his royal treasury, he retires to an island with the lovely ladies he cloned and spends the rest of his life in quiet lust filled tranquillity. And occasional World of Warcraft sessions. NT: Who does America Elect after King Hermit the First?
  9. Re: A Thread for Random Musings Anyone remember the TV fantasy show Wizards and Warriors? I don't know why but I just had a desire to watch it again I'm sure that's a sign of attempted demonic possession.
