  1. What do people think are the best HERO system products from any edition? I personally liked Justice, Inc.
  2. Re: What were the best Marvel titles of the 70's? What? No love for Warlock? He made the Two-in-One annual! Captain America was okay during this period as I recall. I liked the Invaders. Thor was pretty good too.
  3. Re: Casting "Champions Universe: The Motion Picture" Ben Browder for Pulsar
  4. Re: Disney Princesses Mulan - Affirmative Action Hire Princess! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney_Princess
  5. Re: Disney Princesses Personally I'd go with the following: Cinderella - Superspeed - I mean she has to clean the house and wait on three women the whole time, she can outrun the duke who's job was to line a spouse for the prince while wearing a dress Belle - Gadgeteer, Detective (she spent the early part of the movie trying to figure out what was going on), Cramming Ariel - Water based powers, Can you have a wrong skill (i.e. identify object incorrectly 13-) Jasmine - I'd give her some sort of diplomatic, leader skills. After all she had been raised to rule and stood up to the Vizier so she appears to have some political awareness Aurora - Give her ranger/forestry skills - she spent most of her youth in the forest. Mulan's never actually a princess. And there is always Megara - lots of presence (?) to be constantly sarcastic to the Lord of the Underworld. I'd make the whole group report to M for their missions with M being Mary Poppins of course.
  6. Re: Jointbreak and similar maneuvers, I'm getting confused... Wouldn't it be disabled because under the description for the disable element it states "However, for purposes of determining if the attack was Impairing or Disabling, the BODY done by the attack is doubled." Therefore, 6 BODY * 2 = 12 BODY>10 BODY =>disabled limb.
  7. Steve, Here are a couple of follow-up questions on martial art attacks with the disable elements. I took my information from the element description of disable in the ultimate martial artist. In the element description, it provides the example of "Bull" Robinson using a knee-breaking kick (Killing attack with a disable element). His attack does 6 Body to the victim's right leg. The victim has 10 Body so the attack would normally be considered impairing. However, since he used the martial attack with a disable element. The attack is considered to do 12 Body for disabling purposes; so the victim takes 3 BODY (1/2*6) and his leg is disabled since 12 BODY>10 BODY. Here are my questions: 1) If the victim had 2 rPD, would the attack be impairing or disabling? i.e. is the body for disabling calculated as (6-2)*2=8 = impairing or 6*2-2=10=impairing? 2) If you have an attack which is defined as attacking joints for breaking purposes (i.e. hits arms, hands, legs, and feet), but you do not roll for hit location. Does the damage get reduced by the multiplier for said special effect regions? i.e. I am playing a superhero who has a joint break manuever, we don't use hit locations. The special effect of my attack is that I break the arms and leg joints of my victims. I roll 6 BODY 18 STUN on a victim without any rPD. Does he take 6 BODY or 3 BODY with his broken leg? Thanks
  8. Quick question: For a martial attack that has a disable element, do you double the body to check for impairment (a) before defenses are applied or ( after defenses are applied? Thanks
  9. Re: Who is the Greatest Detective of the Champions Universe? No Sherlock Holmes or Father Brown on the list - what's up with that?
  10. Re: Humanity Rating? I was thinking it would provide modifiers to the character's actions, i.e. a low humanity character would have difficulties noticing/interacting with normals (minuses to perception rolls/persuasion rolls to individuals), but might be better at commanding action (pluses to oratory/presence attacks/interrogation, deduction rolls to see the "big picture"). A perfect example in comics is when Green Arrow confronts Green Lantern about his top line behavior and Green Lantern agrees to travel with Green Arrow to regain his humanity. In this case, Green Lantern's humanity was low and he responds with a means to increase it. Sort of can you see the forest or the trees idea.
  11. Re: Humanity Rating? Not necessarily. I am trying to capture the consequences of a characters choices on his ability to relate to the mankind. Compare Captain Marvel to Miracleman. The build should be close to identical. However, as Miracleman progressed and he became more powerful, he chose to distance himself to humanity (e.g. no longer transforming to his alter ego, etc.); whereas Captain Marvel continually struggles to balance his alter ego. I would consider that Miracleman would have a very low humanity score. Another genre that would use this is cyberpunk, as you gain more cyborg attachments you lose your humanity. Certainly the character disads would inform how much humanity you started with and avenues to gain or lose humanity, but I thought it would be a way to track the cumulative consequence of a character's actions throughout a campaign. I guess I am trying to figure out how much a character behaves as a SUPERhuman vs. a superHUMAN.
  12. Re: Humanity Rating? This is where meta-gaming comes in. I envisioned that the players would know that some sort of rating exists, but not the actual contents of their scores. I t would be up to the GM to introduce the changes to how the character perceives his surroundings. I thought this might be a useful GM tool to examine how players use their XP. A character does not necessarily become more heroic as they become more powerful. Instead eschewing power is usual they means to true heroism. I was trying to think of ways to capture the characters progress through the campaign as they either spiral towards a demigod isolated from mankind or they manage to balance the need to protect their world and to keep their humanity.
  13. Re: Shorthand for character personality? I would assume the psych lims on the sheet would be used to populate the motivations (e.g. Psych Lim: Greedy = - Yellow). I thought summarizing the characters motivation and personality style would be sufficient to role-play them well. As far as fear/courage, it could either be their EGO/PRE values or you could put numerical values on the Meyers-Briggs and use some combination to summarize "force of personality/bravery". I find I don't have time to read a couple of sentences before I need to role-play a NPC; so I am looking to develop a quick notation that can help me get the gist of the NPC.
  14. Re: Superheroes, Power and Responsbility I just started a new thread to discuss a potential metric to brings these aspects into a campaign: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59326
  15. Based upon the discussion in this thread: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59296 I got to thinking about a way to track a characters evolution throughout a campaign. I was thinking about how the measure of a hero is how he relates to the average person. Consequently, I was thinking of a humanity rating akin to the sanity rating of Call of Cthulhu. Characters could add to their humanity by spending more time with everyday people, focusing on solving their problems. As a corollary, a hero who becomes more involved with cosmic events would see his humanity rating decrease. Comics abound with examples of heroes who lose touch with humanity (e.g. Miracleman, Dr. Strange at points, Green Lantern, Spectre, etc.) These characters would all have low humanity ratings. Spider-Man with his constant rescues of Aunt May and worrying about his friends and so on would have a high humanity rating. What do people think of the idea? What actions would cause changes to a character's humanity rating? What are the benefits of a high humanity rating/costs of a low humanity rating (e.g. a character with a low humanity rating may have minuses to his perceptions to notice normals during a battle/disaster)?
  16. Hello, As a GM I find that, at times during a gaming session, I have difficulty making assorted NPC's distinct as well as remembering what personalities I want each of the NPC's to display. I was wondering if anyone had developed a shorthand for an NPC's personality type. I have thought about this a bit and here is what I came up with. I would use colors and a 5 point scale (+5 to -5) to reflect the main motivations of the character and use the Meyer-Briggs Indices to reflect the means the character goes about it. Motivations Anger/Patience (Red) Gluttony/Temperance (Orange) Greed/Liberality (Yellow) Envy/Kindness (Green) Lust/Chastity (Blue) Sloth/Diligence (Indigo) Pride/Humility (Violet) Meyers-Briggs Indices (E)xtraverstion/(I)ntroversion (S)ensory/I(N)tuition (F)eeling(T)hinking (J)udging/(P)erceiving Thus, a character who was -4 3 ENTP would be very greedy (-4 Yellow) and reasonable patient (+3 Red) and would go about their plans in an outgoing manner, take leaps of intuition, act after mulling it over, and willing to allow his plans to come to fruition on their timing not his. I developed this system out of a couple of classical behavioral techniques. I figure it would be quick to administer (you could even randomly calculate by rolling a 2d6-7 for the motivations and a d2 for the indices). I figure it would also be useful if any of my players ever uses that pesky aura vision talent (Let's see, he is dark yellow mixed with light red). What do people think? Any comments or suggestions? Other systems that people use to get a quick read on a character?
  17. Which published superhero adventures (from any company) do people think are the best and why?
  18. Re: Convention Game Idea - Classic Champions I always think of Snowblind from the FORCE adventure
  19. Re: Convention Game Idea - Classic Champions Thanks for the background history. I only have the credited information from the comics to go by. Did they share the rights to Icicle since she didn't have her name changed in the comic and she still continues to appear as a Champions character although the backgrounds are different?
  20. Re: Convention Game Idea - Classic Champions Both were created by Glenn Thain (according to the Champions comic books). Icicle is Icestar's younger sister although Icestar is the star (no pun intended).
  21. Re: Convention Game Idea - Classic Champions Yes, I would update all the characters to 5th edition style - not necessarily 5th edition power level so I can make the all the character updates the easiest. I am actually going through this right now with my campaign since my setting is that the Guardians appeared ~25 years ago, and my group, the New Freedom Squad is trying to find out what happened to the old Freedom Squad ~10 years ago. Believe me it is much easier to leave the adventures as period pieces - I've been working on Wings of the Valkyrie for my campaign and Litvak is ~90 years old!
  22. Re: Convention Game Idea - Classic Champions A second question: Do you think I should upgrade the characters' backgrounds and the adventures to modern day or should I leave them as a "period piece" (set them when they were published)?
  23. Re: Convention Game Idea - Classic Champions I dislike the Gilt complex because I find it a bit heavy handed as in "Let's build an adventure to screw the PC's". If the players are on the bad side of the topic, this won't faze them. To quote another player from a "Gilt complex" like adventure. "Look, when yous tart throwing around 12d6 energy blasts, you've got to be able to take some damage back. It's the guys on fault for going out there and using lethal force and expecting us not to respond in kind to stop him."
