  1. Re: Game-Time Pop-Quiz for GM's Just an FYI, HM. Those of us using the gray and green template don't need to highlight, we see that white color just fine.
  2. Re: Game-Time Pop-Quiz for GM's Well, I consider these 'tricky' but not really 'counter-intuitive', but what the hell: Wicked Lazer fires his Nasty Beam (3d6+1 RKA with +2 STUNx) at young sidekick Wonder Boy and hits. If Wonder Boy's ED/rED is 20/10 and Wicked Lazer rolls 11 BODY and a '4' on the STUNx die, how much damage does Wonder Boy take? What if he rolls a '1' on the STUNx die? The GM is having the villian Bio-Flame do battle with the Mighty Mahogany Man, a new PC. Bio-Flame lets loose with his Terrible Torch power (9d6 EB AP) and burns the Wooden Warrior. Mighty Mahogany Man has 25 ED and 25% Energy Damage Reduction, but he also has a Vulnerability to Flame Attacks (1.5x STUN). If Bio-Flame rolls 29 STUN damage on the dice, how much does the Mighty Mahogany Man take? Powerman (SPD 5) did a full move and smashed through the skylight on Phase 3. On Phase 5 he flies a half-move towards the Terror Team and blasts Fear with a pushed Power Blast. Powerman then declares he's going to do a Presence Attack on Loathing (SPD 4), the remaining member of the team. When does his Presence Attack go off? Will Loathing get a chance to respond? I'll post the answers later. We really need to get the on this board.

  4. Character Post: Gil Grissom - Picking Nits This is an excellent effort. Great job. It really takes some courage to do a known character from any form of popular media. This is primarily because when we watch (read, listen to, generally expose ourselves to) the character, we each pick up on different little things based on our own perspectives. So, while we all can agree on the larger aspects of the character (enigmatic, bug expert, etc), it is the minutia that you'll find debated. So, just like everyone else, I've got some comments. From my perspective. Characteristics Overall, I think you've done fairly well at this. My Goodman-Sense kept tingling [20 INT? Give him an 18! Same roll and you save 2 points!], but I shrugged it off. I'll have to agree with Treb that his STR and CON seem a bit high. He's never struck me as being overly physical. If you give Gil a 12 STR, what do you give Stokes? 15? However, I do remember the episode where he had to separate Eddie from Catherine, which I think shows he is willing to be physical when he needs to. Maybe a 9 or 10. Powers So That's What's Going On is an interesting way of simulating his ability to put the whole puzzle together when that key piece of evidence is finally revealed. Nice. Skills I would have never thought of giving him the Animal Handler skill. Very creative. I don't remember him having a huge in-depth understanding of Poker, but you probably remember something I don't. His PS: Criminalist skill seems a little low. He's good at his job. He works well with his team. I'd probably raise this a couple. Giving him Inventor is inspired. I especially liked his improvised field kit in the Jackpot episode. Teamwork is defined as "a character's ability to fight well with others in combat." I really haven't seen that in Gil. At all. Ever. Or any of the other Las Vegas CSI's either. If you are doing Horatio Cain from the Miami part of the franchise, maybe. He pulls his gun every other episode. Sign Language and Literature have already been mentioned, but I also think he needs a Knowledge skill to represent his being a Roller-Coaster enthusiast. Perks Lady Heather has only appeared in a couple of episodes (damn it) and I don't think rises to the level of a Contact any more than Paul Milander did. Talents Excellent choices, no debate here. Disadvantages I would have broken out the watched more so I wouldn't need the Reputation or DF disads, but this works. Like I said, this is well done, and any write up I would create would be derived from this sheet. I'd love to see the rest of the cast, too. Heck, I might even contribute a couple when I have the time. Rep to you.
  5. Re: Trolling for suggestions, 1982-style. 1984, The Master starring Lee Van Cleef! Then, as a side benefit, if you include 'Dirty' Harry Callaghan, they can give each other 'don't I know you from somewhere' looks. doo diddly-oo ... wah wah wah
  6. Re: Trolling for suggestions, 1982-style. 1985. I had a similar thought in Doogie Houser, but his show didn't begin until 1989. It's amazing how past decades just all sort of blur together.
  7. Re: Musings on Random Musings I think some people start threads just to see how long it take for them to get locked. When threads start with a flame, we should be ignoring them, and their originators. And threads generally only get locked after they've been reported.
  8. Re: A Thread for Random Musings My ignore list just keeps on growing....and growing...and growing. I'm going to have to clear it at the beginning of the year in the hopes that everything will have settled down by then. I'm sure a bunch will go right back on, though. Can we try to remember that everyone here is an individual? One's personal beliefs does not nullify their humanity or individuality. Quit wildly slapping around the broad brushes. The problem is that there are a few on the list who are very good reads when outside of political threads or the NGD in general. Sometimes I wish I could have a list just for the NGD forum, and have a smaller list in the other forums. Also, don't feed the trolls.
  9. Re: Trolling for suggestions, 1982-style. - Be careful not to get too vehicle heavy (KITT, Airwolf, etc.). However, if you bring KITT in you have automatic cool evil vehicles in KARR and Goliath. Still, who wants to play David hasslehoff? - Detectives! Magnum has been brought up (don't forget Rick, T.C. and Higgie-Baby) but there were a bunch of mystery solvers in the eighties. I personally always loved Simon & Simon (Rick & AJ), and you can't forget Rockford, but, if you want to go in a little unexpected direction, you could include Jessica Fletcher (Murder, She Wrote) in the mix. - Loved Matthew Star, it had Louis Gossett Jr.! - Did you know that Jackie Chan had a small role in The Cannonball Run in 1981? As himself? Hmmmm? - Finally, Charlie's Angels ran through 1981, so Kelly Garrett, Kris Munroe, and/or Julie Rogers (the Angels when the show closed) could make an appearance with their buddy Bosley.
  10. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER I, also, am suffering from a moment of 'buh?"
  11. Re: Champions Homage in a comic book "Grond" is a word used by Tolkein. It is the name of the Hammer of the Underworld weilded by Morgoth in battle after he had descended to Angband. The battering ram used to destroy Minas Tirith's Great Gate during the Battle of the Pelennor was named after the hammer. I suspect that's where the name is pulled from for the Champions character, and, if these guys are 'geeks', I suspect they got it from the same source. Tolkein was big on languages, though, so it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't base it on a real word.
  12. Re: A Thread for Random Musings In the 'Sentence Game' thread... ...has become... ...in just short of 1200 posts. How many posts will have to be made to get back to the original sentence? Will it happen on it's own? Can all the monkeys at their typewriters create the works of Shakespeare?
  13. Re: What happened to seeker?? After being beaten to a bloody pulp for a final time, Seeker finally snapped. He faked his own death and moved to Hudson City, where he took on a much darker persona and began a one man war on crime. He has shunned his ninja weapons, put on some armor (plus a fedora, trenchcoat and face mask) and has actually taken up some serious firearms. With a tougher nom de guerre, he's actually become very successful, and is a well over 900 point character now. Look for him in the upcoming Hudson City supplement.
  14. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER Nope, not me. You can tell, because she abbreviates your handle as 'DT' where I enjoy 'tribster' or 'tribby-poo' or 'Klingon bait'...you get the idea. We weren't really agruing, though. I mean, it isn't really an argument unless laser cannons and mutated play-dough monsters are involved. Say hello to the tribblettes for me!
  15. Re: Musings on Random Musings Hey! You can't... But I was going to... He started... Oh...fine. If it pleases the masses.
  16. Re: Musings on Random Musings Nowhere... I guess... Baited zornwil... When did zornwil threaten me with death? Whose wrath am I dealing with? The only being that I've faced off with is you, fluffy. I didn't bring lizardus maximus to the table, you did. And now you invoke the name of Mightybec. Who's next? I'll be over here waiting, by myself, until you get everyone you need together to locate and destroy me. Ahem. zornwil, please forgive me. Apparently, I am more intimidating than my less than 1% of your post count would imply, and d.t. had to come crying to you for help. I hope that you have not been inconvenienced too much by the constant whimpering and sniffling from the dust tribblet by your pinky toe. In recompense for your time, I have recently come into possession of over 800 pounds of attorney meat which tastes exquisite with honey barbeque sauce. I'd be glad to prepare you to-go box.
  17. Re: Musings on Random Musings Pardon? I kicked the hive? Which one of us was running around like a little tribble with a bow in her hair saying they needed big bad zornwil to fight his fights? I was just snickering at your pathetic raging. Well, at least with him there truly are consequences. None of which contradicts my point about them sucking worse than the Dungeons and Dragons movie playing on a loop in the middle of a black hole. Actually, I think the Lithuanian Film and Entertainment Comission referred to them as a 'horrendous assault on cinema' and a 'deplorable act of war by the film-makers', but call them what you'd like.
  18. Re: Musings on Random Musings That would make your butt easier to kick, I suppose. I can certianly understand you needing the help. I'm still not particularly concerned. Face facts, Klingon-bait, a couple of past fights with the big lizard is no guarantee you can get him back in the ring. He's like Rocky Balboa to your Mr. T. Especially when he finds out it's to crush some little 3-digit post counter that you can't hande on your own? You'll be lucky his laughter induced radio-active breath doesn't singe away all the hair on your 'giant sized' carcass. Hello, ladies! Disappointing, but accounted for. Typical. I look forward to meeting with your attorneys. My food stocks are a bit low. Oh, no! Not the male admirers! What ever will I do?! Unfortunately, I don't eat trekkies. Too greasy. Better just disintegrate them. Even more help? Perhaps I should have ignored your original declaration of my impending death. Obviously, you can't really handle the job. Loathesomeness has such a nice ring. In truth, I wasn't really putting forth that much an effort, since you've yet to prove I need to. I would hate to hurt your feelings though. Is 'floundering fluff ball' better? As opposed to you?
  19. Re: Musings on Random Musings Well, I can't argue that point. Look at my post count. Someone with less than two hundred posts could easily slip under your radar... Clever plan, but flawed. Unlike you and your large rubbery friend, I am not limited to surface movement. More improtantly, however, it is doubtful zornwil would accept your challenge...why would someone of his stature waste his time with your fuzzy little difficult to pinpoint hiney? If I told you that, they wouldn't be talking anymore would they? I also know about your Margaret Thatcher fetish, but the tribblettes do a better job of arousing my interest. I promise not to bruise them.
  20. Re: UNTIL SuperPowers Database Usefulness I own it and I've been playing and GMing on and off for 20+ years. I love the book for two reasons. 1) New Players. I've just recently pulled together a group of three players who are totally new to the HERO system. When one of them wanted to play a Human Torch rip off, I handed him the USPD open to the Fire Powers section and told him to pick what he wanted, and if he didn't see something specific to let me know. Which allowed me to focus on the gadgeteer a bit more. The USPD and Gadgets and Gear make great quick start lists for creating Champions characters. 2) Quick Villians. Hm. I need an Ice projector and a guy made out of steel. I have a good idea what that means and what powers each should have, but do I really want to spend the time fine-tuning the all of the powers I've got whirring around in my head for these two villians when those powers are right there in the USPD and I can just copy them. Also, if the USPD doesn't have exactly what I'm looking for, it usually has a similar power that I can use as a base. Hero Designer and the USPD/G&G combo have made Character startup and GM prep fast and relatively easy for me. As a result, I can focus more on refining my plots and getting my players involved in the genre...not just the fights. I love the HERO system to death and I love to tinker with characters, but I love to sit down and play more and the publishing choices that DoJ have made has only made that easier for my friends and I to do. I think books like the USPD, et.al. are raising the HERO system to a more generally accessible level that really didn't exist before. Does that make it something you should run out and buy right now? Probably not, but even for some one who is as intimately familiar with the system as you and I are, it can be a real boon. I'd put it on my definite 'to buy' list, if I were you. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised at how much use you'll get out of it.
  21. Re: Musings on Random Musings You just noticed now? I guess tribbles have reduced PER rolls. Which should make it easy to hide from your wrath. Though I do look forward to the assault of your snuggly tribblettes. Come and get me, tribby-poo.
  22. On Hero Designer and Psychology When I was at GenCon SoCal last year I picked up Hero Designer (along with a bunch of other stuff) and I am very pleased with the product. Champions prep has never been so easy! Yet, I find myself going to the Designer forum not for new export templates or to report any bugs I find. Nope, I go there for the sole purpose of seeing what threads Dan Simon has closed this week. It gives me a base pleasure to read each thread unfolding in a generally predictable way... ...over and over again. Now, I don't know what this says about Dan, or all the requestors, and I really don't care. I just want to know what it says about me.
