  1. Re: Your FIRST Super Hero Character The Fireball Flan Man, a little cartoon I drew in the seventies. Short, round guy with a cape and goggles; fire-based powers and flight, of course... Probably inspired by the telly show TISWAS and their character The Phantom Flan Flinger as I can't imagine why else I'd have been so interested in flans at such a young age He later became the villain in a series of strips I drew about Wonder Vicar, a fairly ludicrous hero idea dreamt up with a friend when he was ill-advisedly cast in the school play as a vicar and dressed up in rather flowing black cloak. Ah, schooldays....
  2. Re: For those Model Citizens out there Sadly I only have a black and white printer It looks like a beauty though.
  3. If you can handle it... Disney's Temple of the Forbidden Eye in all its fiddly cardboard glory.
  4. Re: A new page of pulp resources I posted your observation over at the Pinnacle site and the link has now been corrected.
  5. Re: A new page of pulp resources Right, the link seems to be publicly available now so I've reposted it above.
  6. Re: A new page of pulp resources Unfortunately I'm not connected with the project in any way, but I'll see if I can find some contact info and make them aware of this. Edited to add: The link for this site was posted by a user on the Pinnacle Savage Worlds forum this morning, but it seems now to have been removed. There's the possibility that it should not have been listed in the first place, so until I can find out the details I am removing the link from my initial post.
  7. The Ravaged Earth Society was planned as a pulp supplement for the Savage Worlds RPG, but unfortunately it was recently announced that the project had been shelved. However, all is not lost! A new site has been created with information from the proposed supplement, including a list of links and resources. Pulp HERO GMs may find other handy titbits on the rest of the site, too. Edit: The Pinnacle site was down for several days due to a substantial revamp, so unfortunately I couldn't check that this link should be shared... but since it's now on their front page I'll re-post it here: Ravaged Resources
  8. Remarkable photos of an uncontacted tribe in Brazil. The pulp era is not over, it seems
  9. Re: Steve Reviews INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL
  10. Re: PS238 Best Game of 2008! Congratulations! I'm really hoping that one of the retailers at the UK Games Expo this weekend will have it for sale, otherwise it'll have to wait until I get back and can make a trip to town. There are some Champions games being run there, I notice, so fingers crossed that Hero support is improved over last year.
  11. Re: Do you use minis? Even easier to do now that they've started making Shrinky Dinks for printers.
  12. Re: Energiser Bunny Effect You might find a few flaws in the concept. Many, many years ago I ran a Golden Heroes character called The Bulletproof Man. He was almost impossible to kill, but not too hard to put down... after a time he'd get up and be ready to go again. The villain dropped a bus on him. My chap was not, of course, strong enough to move said bus and so remained stuck under it until the fight was over. I tried variations on the character in different systems and never had much success. My idea was to play someone who was essentially normal and had to really use his wits in a world populated by supers, with the near-indestructibility balancing things out by not letting him get killed in the first encounter, but in the end he was unable to consistently offer much to the game. It doesn't surprise me that you're having trouble with the balance, but it might be that this sort of character just has an inherent problem.
  13. Re: PS238 Roleplaying Game Looking forward to those. I'm hoping to take a look at the books at the UK Games Expo next weekend, although last year (the first year for the Con) I couldn't find a single HERO System book for sale
  14. Sometimes the BBC website just oozes stories with pulp potential. Here's another, concerning Charles Lindbergh's work towards immortality. Who else might have been interested in that sort of technology, had it appeared? An elite of immortals, just requiring replacement parts now and then...
  15. Re: The President's Alien Flintlocks Hmm... It might be interesting to run a game where the characters are the ones who made the switch and the adventure is a "flashback" to how it all happened and why.
  16. This news story from the Beeb sparked all sorts of pulpy adventure possibilities for me. I'd not previously heard of the pistols in question, but it's a fascinating story. And don't worry that the report casts doubt on an extraterrestrial origin... clearly misinformation
  17. Re: Steve Reviews INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL Back from the early showing (unfortunately, this being a Bank Holiday weekend, it was not as kid-free as I'd hoped) and I must say I very much enjoyed the film. Yes, it could have been better; it could also have been far worse, and although that's no recommendation in itself I think it caught the tone of a solid adventure romp pretty well. Some humour, plenty of inventive and well-executed stunts, nods to the previous instalments and some of the most appropriate use of CGI I've seen in a recent film, generally using it to enhance other effects instead of replacing them. It also had a non-screamy female character and no Short Round, two major points in its favour I could point to a number of slightly niggling things here and there - I'll probably spot more on the next viewing - but that can be done with any of the Indy films... they're not perfect, but they are fine entertainment. And for the slightly more obsessive Indy fan: Did you notice that he wore the shoulder bag over his jacket instead of under it?
  18. Re: Ape Name Needed The Artificial InSimianator...
  19. Re: Steve Reviews INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL I'm off to see it in the morning, definitely not wearing my Akubra Federation hat, Peter Botwright jacket and MkVII gas-mask bag (I wouldn't want the cinema staff to think I was obsessive or anything ) and all I'm looking for is an enjoyable B-movie style adventure. The one great thing about the Star Wars prequels is that they have provided a wonderfully low benchmark for new films: Whatever else, I can be confident of walking out of the cinema thinking that it was better than those three.
  20. Re: Stronghold Concept Art The description alongside the art seems at odds with the images. If the place had been running into the ground since the seventies (possibly the 1870s...) then the pictures would be more in tune, but it seems rather dismal and decrepit for a facility that has undergone at least one rebuild and is still in operation after a couple of major breakouts. It will be interesting to see where they take the idea and what the thinking is behind the choice of Stronghold's look.
  21. Re: Odd Costume Designes He'd probably be better than the briefs-clad German CoH hero my friend created, Wunderpants! I'm hoping that things like billowing cloaks with absurd collars (á la Doctor Strange and the Vision will be a possibility. The CoH designer is nice, but far too many of the options don't look either heroic or "comic-booky" to my old eyes.
  22. Re: Hudson City as Pulp city? Fair enough.
  23. Re: Character Portraits as Card Stand-Ups It's the sort of relatively small yet appealing thing that may just do that. Design your character for the MMO, then have the image of him from the computer game printed on your Champions character sheet and stand-up figure for use at the table. Hardly a feature worth buying the game just to have, but it's a visual and conceptual link between the two games. Obviously this sort of thing can be done anyway with screenshots and editing software, but if a simple feature for it existed within the game I think that a fair few people might go for it.
  24. Just musing earlier today and it struck me that being able to represent your Champions Online character in the actual RPG might be nice, perhaps by way of a Cardboard Heroes-type stand-up. Not sure how likely this would be, but a utility letting players print the image of their character onto such a template would be rather cool.
