It seems that every movie studio has to learn the same lesson--sometimes over and over again--for themselves. They all seem to think that making movies which "appeal to kids" is equivalent to making movies "just for kids", thereby turning off the rest of the potential audience. "All ages" does not mean "little kids only", but few movie executives/producers seem to grok that.

and you could do a Dark Champions "vigilante superhero" campaign setting as a release for that as well.  And my long-wished for War Hero book for each major evolution in combat.

In terms of "unfolding", as dmjalund puts it, I would revamp Dark Champions for 6e and call it Action Hero, and then put out a Danger International campaign book, providing a complete espionage campaign setting.

If we accept daikaiju as essentially meaning "as big as Godzilla", then Kong was daikaiju in his second film appearance. This upcoming movie has more in common with that 1962 movie than any of the remakes of the original King Kong movie that came later.

You absolutely have the right to like or dislike anything. But looking at the daikaiju genre as a whole, IMO it's tough to objectively say that anything in particular doesn't fit in. These movies have featured giant dinosaurs, giant insects, giant dragons, giant turtles, giant dogs, giant humanoids, giant aliens, giant robots, and giant things for which there aren't even words.   Toho Studios even adapted a giant version of Frankenstein's monster!

My own view is that Legendary Pictures has done a pretty solid job of setting up a world in which all these things can co-exist and interact, so that if you can accept its basic premises (and I admit not everyone can), it all hangs together rather well.

2017 Legendary Pictures Kong was already much, much bigger than 1933 Radio Pictures Kong, and was described as a juvenile of his species back in 1973. In the nearly 50 years since the events of that movie, he has clearly grown to full size. At least they made a reasonable effort to explain the size equivalence in 2021. But honestly, if Kong's size is a sticking point for you then I don't know how you can enjoy any daikaiju movie.

Oh, I'd also love to see the 6e Vehicles book get revived and completed.

Kickstarter: someone mentioned in another thread that starship combat rules were punted from Star Hero to the never-complete 6e Vehicles book. I'd be willing to back such a book.

The Fantasy Hero 6E PDF it is both cheaper and easier to use (than the hardcover). You can search the PDF for things, which is a real plus for books of that size. And since you already have the full game system rules, FH6e is going to give you far more useful material than Fantasy Hero Complete.

That's true, but only militaries conduct courts martial. If Starfleet had not been a military organization, then Lt. Cmdr Spock would not have been tried by a court martial in The Menagerie. In fact, it could be argued that the Federation would never have empowered any other type of organization to establish a service order with so extreme a sentence as General Order 7.

The French resistance during WWII was a partisan force. Starfleet is nothing at all like a small, loosely organized, woefully under-funded guerilla force. They were the Federation’s “space navy”, military from top to bottom, with civilian vessels integrated into non-combat roles where it made sense.

The Enterprise, along with its mission, did not represent the primary function of Starfleet. In fact, its mission was highly specialized. Starfleet’s primary function was the defense of the Federation. I don’t know why “defense” is perceived as unmilitary by some folks here, but any organization created and mustered for combat operations is a military regardless of its interest—or lack thereof—in conquest.

TNG, and the series that followed, quietly retconned/rewrote quite a number of established elements in order to tell stories to a rather different audience (i.e., the casual sci-fi fan) who had no knowledge of or use for TOS canon. It’s one reason why I don’t particularly care for the Star Trek that Berman Built.

It also seems that the massive shift in direction and tone, starting with TNG, has made fans forget that Starfleet was originally, first, and foremost a military entity. The Federation is the governing body, and Starfleet is its primary military arm. Just because Picard thought every aggressor could be dealt with rationally and diplomatically doesn’t mean Starfleet had ceased to serve a military function. If it had, then Wolf 359 could never have happened.

Personally, I've yet to be disappointed by Legendary's "Monsterverse" movies. By several of the standards of general film making they could definitely have been better, but they gave me plenty of what I go to movies like these for: awesome looking giant monsters in awesome fights.

Personal theory: Cap's shield is endowed with Plot Device powers. Which would be fine if it only appeared in a single plot line and then was gone, like most Plot Device powers/objects. But it is a persistent object, used in story after story, and so the Rule of Internal Consistency becomes an overriding concern, or at least it should be if the writer(s) want to be respected and regarded as competent. The Rule of Cool only goes so far before it becomes a tool for farce. For instance, I'm sure there are lots of people out there who think it would be "cool" to see Chewbacca pick up a lightsaber and fire blaster bolts from it, but that would make me cringe so hard it would break my face.

I remember a long-ago discussion right here on the boards about what Caps shield can and can't do that got hung up on a comic where he jumped out of a 10 story building and curled up on the shield when he landed, then ran off like nothing had happened (I noted with some amusement that he does this *exact* thing in Winter Soldier).
Some folks were fine with it because he was just soaking the falling damage & his shield can do that.  Others were not buying it because momentum doesn't work that way.
This turned into (as internet discussions do) a discussion of "can Cap stop a bus by standing in front of it and blocking with his shield?"  It was agreed Hulk could probably punch the bus to a stop from the front, and Cap holding the Shield can take a Hulk punch so can Cap holding the shield take a hit from a bus and stop it?

My takeaway was that this is all rubber physics and it's mostly a question of when does your suspension of disbelief start to fray.  We are more aware of how bad falling is and how massive a bus is, but we have a fuzzy idea of how much pressure a Hulk fist applies on a Newtons per square inch level so somehow falling onto the shield bothers people in a way that withstanding a Hulk fist doesn't.

The MCU just make that even more visible.

For me, the Rule of Cool needs to be tempered with internal consistency at the very least. Realistic physics aren't necessarily to be expected in a superhero movie in any case, but if they establish rules for how things work, they should stick to them. Otherwise they fail to earn the drama they're trying to generate in their action scenes. This principle is just basic Writing/World-building 101, something any screenwriter worth their salt should know and practice in all their writing.

By the time of the events of Infinity War, Starlord had been through the dramatic arcs of two GoG movies, more than sufficient to evolve as a character. I'd argue that he should have learned how to be a hero by then, at least by comic book standards, even if his methods were often somewhat juvenile. But he didn't display the kind of heroism the leader of a group that thinks of themselves as guardians of the entire galaxy should have, and the way I see it that's the fault of the writers, not my expectations.

If true, then that explains the dissonance succinctly. You can't take a tragic Norse figure and transform him into a tragic Greek figure without (negative) consequences.

Nobody is going to care if you "pay" for that villain lair with a Villain Bonus representing villain XP or if you don't even bother with that unnecessary formality.

Mechanon is a good example in that he went from consuming 3/4 of a page in 1st and 2nd edition to several pages in 6th edition. He was always intended to be an Ultron clone, even in 1st edition, but in my experience it was never remotely necessary to define and describe him with the degree of bloat found in 6e.
