  1. Our little evil GM has just come up with something rather interesting. He mentioned that it would be a good idea if a PC had political contacts. Without consulting each other, me and one other player came up with two rather well placed people in the government - one is the right hand man of the Mayor and I am the head of the Emergency Service Units for the same city. Our group is forming the very first official Super Hero group (supers have been a bit of a 'myth' so there have been no official word about them as of yet). And guess who are the two people who were put in charge of the project? So now we have to do this dance number. During tryouts, each one of us had to come up with excuses and so on not to be around. I can't wait until citations are handed out...
  2. Heh, if they received any in the San Francisco office, I might just take a long lunch and bring my wallet. Actually, I already pre-ordered at my FLGS so that would be wrong of me.
  3. Nah, My character in the game I play in is also a speedster named Gold Rush. Just a common name is all. I chose Gold Rush because he's a speester in SF. It was either him or a brick with growth called Redwood. However, the player's comments about "Woody" helped me choose my character.
  4. I had come up with an entirely new coin system... For a Live Action game, I had a system called Lunars. They were based upon the phases of the moon. You'd have a quarter Lunar, or a Phase (shaped like a crescent moon), a half Lunar (shaped like half a circle) and then a Lunar (a full coin). They were made out of silver. Then you had the gold coins. A gold Phase was same shape as a silver Phase and worth 7 silver Lunars (or 28 Phases). And then you had the gold half Lunar and then the full gold Lunar. That was it. Something a player came up with was that if he was out of money, he was "New" (as in a New Moon). However, I was eventually over-ruled by 'old school' neoates that wanted the 100cp=10sp=1gp so I dropped a grand and got them.
  5. Nope. They are making profits and simply put it back into the areas that are selling - such as the clix. Until there is a bigger need for Hero, they won't purchase it. Afterall, you don't stock up on swiss cheese if 99% of the people buy gouda.
  6. Young-un's? Sheesh, make me feel old since not only do I remember watching UNCLE - I even know the Acronym.
  7. Actually, no, they are nothing alike. I can't speculate on how the original creators nearly two decades ago came up with the original names but I have found nothing that could link either group to their Marvel 'counterparts'. They are all different fish.
  8. My FLGS is a Gaming Store/Comic Book Store/Gaming Center hybrid. The back third of the store is for the Gaming Center, leaving the front two thirds for the games and comics. He has VERY limited shelf space so he needs to pick what will sell and what won't. Luckily, the game I play in/run is just two blocks from this store so I have managed to talk a couple of my friends into buying from him as well. Hopefully, this will boost more sales and thereby have a nice stock in stock. The trouble with a new store is that they usually will only buy what sells and I had to guarantee them (with a deposit) that I was going to buy Fantasy Hero before they would order it.
  9. Okey, a very simple concept that is screwing up my head... I figure that a character travelling at great speeds become a blur - so much so that recognizing him would be difficult. So Joe, in his Secret ID does a quick run from point A to point B in his secret ID but because he moves so fast, no one can ID him. I first thought invisibility, but that isn't quite right. Then I thought the Disguise skill but it also didn't seem appropriate - rolling everytime he ran to hide himself. Finally, I am thinking of Change Environment to add some negs to the Per roll but again, not fitting the mold. Has anyone created such a SFX that would work? Could it be a minor transformation (such as Instant Change) with a 'only while running' modifier?
  10. Awww, and I thought I was original with my new speedster from California calling him Gold Rush. Guess I need to come up with a new name... waaaaaaaa!
  11. -The Hulk stops the dam from leaking by putting a boulder in the way. -Spiderman stops the bridge from collapsing by using his webbing to mesh together the cables that snapped. -Superman stops the ship from sinking by welding the breach closed with his heat vision. Is this just a SFX or is there something that refs require (Body Aid?) in order to do such things? I use just good RPing myself but wondered if anyone required rules for it.
  12. my hardest problem is trying to make the owner of my FLGS understand WHAT products to buy. He purchased just two copies of FReD without any of the cool support materials. I FINALLY got him to purchase CKC and USPD which, I feel, really helps to sell the game - seeing the examples and such things. He's absorbed into the Clix market at the moment so I have to use a soft baseball bat to get things across.
  13. First off, Storn's art is great, don't get me wrong about that. But I agree that the cover seems a bit off. The triangular slope of the heroes seems to lead your eye to nothingness, and the blue heroine blasting a lightening bolt from her spear seems out of place. Almost the rest of the book is in earth tones and this color really stands out as a distraction. I think someone in dark green and just readying the spear would have worked better. The back page does seem to have that "large group of Super Villians" feel to it that I have seen in so many other covers. Still, I couldn't have done a job anywhere near that. And it is always easy to be an armchair art critic. But that won't stop me from buying a copy - or my friend from buying 5
  14. If the villian is 'special' in my universe, then the players sometimes already have an idea how poweful they are by reports on the villian. "I'd be careful around Poltergeist." "Why" "He likes to punch THROUGH powered suits." "Oh..."
  15. Heh, Nice resource. It was worth it if nothing else to get a cool pic of Lyta.
  16. Re: Re: Uncut Um, I am a redheaded stepchild... But no offense taken. I actually love the fact that I fit this typical stereotype and have never been 'beaten' in such a manner.
  17. Speed Brick Here's something ugly that I found out putzin' around with HD. And it is only 250 points - givein you a whoppin' 100 points to play around with. The Speed Brick Val Char Cost 60 STR 50 18 DEX 24 30 CON 40 12 BODY 4 10 INT 0 10 EGO 0 10 PRE 0 10 COM 0 15/30 PD 3 10/20 ED 4 10 SPD 72 18 REC 0 60 END 0 60 STUN 3 6" RUN02" SWIM012" LEAP0Characteristics Cost: 200 Cost Power END 38 Armor (15 PD/10 ED) Powers Cost: 38 Cost Skill 3 Breakfall 13- 3 Climbing 13- 3 Tactics 11- 3 Teamwork 13- Skills Cost: 12 Total Character Cost: 250
  18. I use a similiar scale in my games. I try to give those in the base's database an offensive and defensive rating: Offensive is AP/10 for their primary attack(s) Defensive is their overall PD or ED/5 (whichever is higher).
  19. My knowledge of the rules is slightly limited, but I remember (at least in 4th ed) that there were certain advantages. Such as you can 'spread' your attack without losing any power to the blast. Two targets standing next to each other get two rounds each. As well as there are other powers as mentioned before that if you add Autofire to it makes them a bit more buff as well (dunno what the are though). Even if you hit with only two shots, it could be well worth the advantage to do the damage twice to him. I am also trying to remember if Autofire adds to Knockback or not.
  20. I'm at work, lazy, without FReD, so I am posting here my questions as I doodle a character on Hero Designer. I have created a speedster character that already has a double KB HA. I want to create a type of 'sonic boom' where when he runs by multiple targets, they take a knockback from his passing. Would just doing a Multiple Move-By with standard HA damage (including KB) be appropriate? Also, about Megascale movement, if I create him Flying, only while in contact with surface, at a MegaScale of 20KM, does his turn mode suck? "Nice speed there, Jim. And you made a pretty design on that wall..."
  21. Combine Autofire with AOE 1 hex and it can get ugly. As for other uses, I'm not that cheese.... er, creative.
  22. Not exactly. According to the rules, you can half move, grab and squeeze/throw. He half moved and grabbed (without squeeze or throw). He waited a segment and before his next phase, he 'squeezed'. I had trouble telling him it couldn't be done as he could have squeezed back when he first grabbed the guy but at the same time, it really isn't a held action.
  23. So running the game last night, a person half moved and grabbed a character. I told him he could grab and squeeze or grab and throw. He just held onto the guy. Just before his next phase started he decided to squeeze the character since he could have done it last phase. So, can a person hold onto a character and squeeze on another segment?
  24. I can't remember offhand - do you need to have end costing powers in MP slots or is that just for EC?
  25. Depends upon the senario - sometimes there's nothing but RP, sometimes nothing but combat. I go for a 50/50 ratio. As for newbies - I am currently running a game with nothing BUT new players to the Hero system. it is currently 5% RP with 95% combat. I find most new players tend to be like this as they concentrate on learning the mechanics at first.
