  1. Re: Alternate Universe: No Industry, No Guns That would be a hard science fiction objection. We're talking Sliders here.
  2. Re: Alternate Earth 3: Passionless Christ Dude, it's the exact same war that Christianity had.

  4. Re: Musings on Random Musings They knew you were a "Senior Member"
  5. Re: Alternate Universe 2 Conscious control over fertility opens up a world of recreational sex for women by reducing the risks. I see two approaches that a Sliders type show would take. Either it's a matriarchal society with women holding most of the good jobs and men expected to take the lion's share of the household responsibilities or it's a patriarchal society where men totally clamp down on women and failing to breed when your husband tells you to is treated as a crime. Of course a world's big. It can accomodate both options.
  6. Re: Alternate Universe: No Industry, No Guns OK then. Electrical generation has been invented, and cities have lights, factories and mass transit systems powered by it. Cross country travel however relies on canal barges or animals pulling cars over rail systems. Farms haven't mechanised and plantation agriculture is being used to grow cotton in what in our world is the American South. Clipper ships cross the oceans.
  7. Re: Alternate Earth 3: Passionless Christ OK, I'd go with "Everyone's a Jew". Jesus Christ is remembered as the Messiah who converted the Roman Emperor to Judaism, and made it the state religion of the Empire. As a result there's a strong social stigma toward anyone who goes around without some kind of headcovering and toward cleanshaven men in North America and Europe. You are obviously foreigners and unbelievers.
  8. Re: Musings on Random Musings Well, I've seen actual albums where it happens that the end of a song is on the next track so... As for your question you'd need editing software to change where songs break, but it's easy enough to change song titles.

  11. Re: Alternate Universe: No Industry, No Guns We can assume that such a world would advance more slowly. While they could still develop electric power sources like hydroelectricity and industrialise that way, fossil fuels would be a quicker and easier path. Transportation technology would be particularly handicapped, so I can easily see technology becoming much more regionalised with a bigger gap between city and country. Inland and away from rivers things tend to become very primitive if not wild. Fortification becomes comparatively more effective without artillery so the castle-building phase only stops when an area is particularly sure that there's no fear of war or uprising. Thus a greater tendency not to abandon monarchy.
  12. Re: Alternate Earth 3: Passionless Christ The butterflies are incalculable. It could mean that women aren't barred from the priesthood or that Christianity never catches on as anything except a minor subsect of Judaism.
  13. Re: What Fantasy/Sci-Fi book have you just finished? Please rate it... Academ's Fury by Jim Butcher of Harry Dresden fame. This is a kind of rags to riches series with a boy who starts out being held in contempt by those around for being the only one in the entire country who can't do magic manages to rise through the ranks of society through his hard work, resourcefulness and luck. I'd rate it as somewhat above average but unremarkable.
  14. Re: A Thread for Random Musings I don't drink when I drive. It wouldn't leave me a hand free for my book.
  15. Re: Genres HERO GAMES may want to avoid (intended to be humorous) Yes. And actually the combat mechanics, being a toned down version of a serious game, are quite playable in a wargamey way.
  16. Re: The Forever Man The Wizard of Oz Incorporated: I'm pretty sure my life isn't going to be long enough to figure out what's going on with your life, and I don't intend to waste years trying to kill someone I don't even dislike. But I tell you what I can do for you. If it's the burden of thousands of years of memories that you can't live with, I've got psychotronic technology that can fix that. Run your brain through the spin cycle and you'll be good for another thousand years or two.

    Mechnoids

Re: Mechnoids The Palladium Games product? If anyone has then they'll have to keep it secret.
  18. Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? The Arbiter, from the Chess Album. You know the songs about chess from that album are way better than the romantic songs from it that litter my parent's CD collection.
  19. Re: Character name needed Does he have a secret ID?
  20. Re: A Thread for Random Musings Today I thought "I should open my curtains and take off my pants". Then I thought "That sounded like there was something wrong with it"
  21. Re: Alternate Earth Characters #11 Given the environment she grew up she could actually have mutant powers instead.

    Debriefing

Re: Debriefing Riptide: Yeah baby! If hot alien babe wants to use him, she can use him all night long. Is he worried about Vitus? Nah. If he cared he wouldn't have dumped her and if he changes his mind, Riptide can dodge until he cools down. As team leader, entrepreneur and idol of millions he'll probably qualify.

    Idea Bank

Idea II: Janissaries The characters are humans kidnapped by aliens because they had the right genetics to be given superpowers (which is what the probing was about). The aliens needed warriors to fight in their war so they erased the memories of their abductees and gave them superpowers. However in the first session they learn about Earth and are given a chance to desert and try to go back and find out who they really are.
  24. Re: Genre-crossover nightmares Champions and Charnel Houses Groups of people in spandex get together in bars and drink until someone hands them a map leading to a supervillain lair. Nobody bothers to ask whether the "supervillian" has committed any crimes, they just group together into a team to go off, kill him and his henchmen and loot the corpses.
