That they don't....though the manual has some borderline terrifying maintenance advice (everything is meant to be serviced, not replaced).

Brakes get grease on them?  Disassemble the rear wheels to take the brake shoes off, pour kerosene over them and light them on fire - problem solved!

Oil gets contaminated with gas or other crud?  Drain the oil, fill the crank case with kerosene, run the starter (with the ignition off) for 2-3 minutes, drain the kerosene and fill with oil. Proceed to run the engine "gently" for a little while.

Ok...that last one I'll likely be doing in the immediate future...but still, the fascination with kerosene as the cure to all ills on a vehicle is somewhat disturbing.

There are some pessimists grousing that they'll need to build the next-generation lepton (electron-electron and electron-positron) collider to get new physics rather than just colliding protons together (which what LHC is doing) or even protons and antiprotons.  The trouble is: to do that, you're going to need an entirely new bunch of hardware to do that.  You will probably have to build a new, gigantic linear accelerator ("linac").

The reason for that is physics.  When you accelerate a charged particle, that makes radiation (light, radio waves, x-rays); and making the particle turn *is* acceleration.  How much radiation depends on the kinetic energy of the particle, and the particle's rest mass, and the amount of acceleration.  It turns out that the fractional energy loss (that is, what fraction of the kinetic energy of the particle gets lost from the particle and turned into radiation) is proportional to the particle mass raised to the minus 4th power.  Electrons are about 1/2000 of the mass of a proton, so the radiation loss from making electrons run around a circular racetrack is MUCH larger than that suffered by making protons run around the same racetrack at comparable kinetic energy.  Now, the acceleration is inversely proportional to the radius of curvature, so a bigger curvature would diminish the lateral acceleration and the associated energy loss, but it also means a bigger machine.  The 8.5 km ring that's at CERN and now is the site of the LHC was the location of the LEP (which was an electron-positron collider), which ran from 1989 to 2000.

With foreseeable magnet and accelerator technology, you're going to need a much larger ring, or settle for a "straight-line" accelerator where the radius of curvature approaches infinity.  And that's going to be expensive, and those who remember the SSC fiasco in the US in the 1990s know that there are limits to what you can raise money for.

I missed this when it appeared, perhaps because I was sick with COVID at the time, but NASA's Parker Solar Probe has got some images of the surface of Venus in the visible bandpass, albeit at the long-wavelength end: see https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2022/sun/parker-solar-probe-captures-its-first-images-of-venus-surface-in-visible-light-confirmed

I would not have imagined an astronomical imaging spacecraft looking at Venus, but given that the Parker probe's primary target is the Sun, saturating and damaging the instruments is not going to be an issue for that spacecraft.  The features seen in Parker's imager correlate with features on the surface mapped by the Magellan mission's radar imager when it operated in the early 1990s.

You are looking through thick cloud layers, but at a surface whose temperature is 465 Celsius ... not as hot (by about 100 degrees C) as the nichrome wire heating element in your toaster as it scorches your bread into toast ... but hot enough that the human eye would note a distinct glow from an object that temperature.

Mortimer, "Morti," Whynter was a 27 year old college junior, the King of Major Swaps. His inheritance from his great aunt Hortense provided for all of his needs until his college graduation, including a very well-appointed apartment with a great entertainment system. Mortimer poured over the college catalog fretfully, as he was running out of majors! He had so many credits in each area that the remaining degrees would only buy him a few more semesters at best. He tossed aside his iPad (with all the upgrades) and turned on his 75" TV. He'd have to start considering jobs (aunt Hortense's trust fund didn't cover grad school; she was self-made and was being quite uncharacteristically generous in providing for a four year degree), when what he really wanted to do was Netflix and chill. If only he could find someone to chill with. His prospects were slim until . . .

. . . his potted ficus suddenly grew to an enormous size, and wrapped itself around him. For a time, everything was green. Just green. Every shade from light, almost yellowish green akin to the back of some plants' leaves, to a dark, almost black shade that reminded him of . . . nothing, really. Morti didn't really have a whole lot of knowledge about plants, despite his 8 semester hours in Botany. He began to feel faint, and start to wonder whether he was dreaming, having drifted off while watching Day of the Triffids or something. As he realized that he hadn't yet started streaming any shows, he suddenly found himself in a small . . . hut? alchemy lab? nursery? He'd been summoned by  . . .
