  1. Re: Combat skill levels Depends on how they're applied. As ghost-angel says you have a few options (although it takes 2 CSLs to add a damage class, not one). Basically, assuming you have 2 All Combat Levels, you have the following options during any given Phase: 1. Put both levels into OCV, improving your chance of hitting your target. 2. Put both levels into DCV, decreasing the change of anyone hitting you. 3. Put one level in OCV and one in DCV, improving your accuracy a little and decreasing your chance of getting hit a little. 4. Put both levels into damage, increasing the damage you do. Exactly how this works depends on the campaign you are in. In heroic games it just adds an extra DC to the attack. In superheroic games it adds 3 STUN to the damage on normal attacks or 1 BODY for killing attacks, but damage can't exceed the max damage for the attack.
  2. Re: How would I write up this power Ockham is correct in confusing matters. Summon sounds right but we really have no idea what this monster does or how it acts, how long it lasts, etc. Also, what effect does this drawing of energy from the environment have on the environment?

"I wouldn't allow PSLs to counteract the -2 from Grab because it's an integral part of the Maneuver and there is no way to perform that Maneuver without incurring the penalty, so I won't let it counteract the -2 from Sweep/Rapid Attack for the same reason." If someone is Sweeping a Grab, any levels with Sweep or Grab would apply. I have to admit the jury is still out on this for me personally though. I may eventually rule that when using Sweep you may only use the higher of any two CSLs which may apply but they don't add together. Since this has never come up in game for me, ever, I haven't really given it much thought.
  4. Re: Few Questions about Sweep, and Combat Skill levels No, I don't have a problem with it at all. In fact, I might even encourage it. I didn't realize why, but you did make me think about it. What I realized is that if you buy a +X with Hipshot, you only get that bonus while performing a Hipshot. While you can combine Hipshot with some other maneuvers (such as a Strike, Grab, etc.) you cannot with other maneuvers like a Move Through, Grab By, Haymaker, Sweep and there are some attacks, due to Limitations, you just can't combine with it. And you also get that DCV penalty while doing so. So no, I don't have a problem with it. Yes I do. And I can even say this from experience. I allowed "PSLs' with Sweep before we had PSLs. I modified Ranged Skill Levels back in 4th edition, and even called them Penalty Skill Levels and allowed them to apply to any penalty. Along came 5th edition and Steve Long's FAQ response so I thought about it, like I do whenever I see something like that, and ended up agreeing with him. It makes sense and it's fair.   5. Re: New Mechanic: Killing Attack Adder I guess it's fruitcake. Nobody seems to like it yet it sells by the ton every winter. I can't argue your logic. By all that is fair and logical KAs should be more expensive than normal attacks... but they aren't. Personal experience, rather than logic, as taught me why. That's all I got to stand on here and I've found personal experience is a very difficult thing to share. Oh well. At least I've got some fruitcake.

Mine is pretty much if doing 0 BODY is worth X, and the possibility of doing body is X, why should the possibility of doing more body be X+? Perhaps yours would be if the possibility of doing more body should be X+, why isn't doing no body X-? To me the difference is in what defense the attack is versus, but in what the attack does. KAs kill people. Normal Attacks beat people up. Flashes make their senses stop working temporarily, Drains reduce the effects of their powers, etc... You pick the one that you need to use, and from my own experience, I've never noticed any kind of advantage of KAs over Normal Attacks unless you're trying to kill someone, but that's what a KA is there to do.

Why not just make it a +0 Advantage in the same way Does No Body is a -0 Limitation? Is doing Killing damage any more advantageous over doing Normal Damage than doing Normal Damage is over doing STUN Only?

  10. Re: Few Questions about Sweep, and Combat Skill levels I didn't feel I needed to. It says Maneuver where I look up Sweep, so it's a Maneuver. I don't care if it's a different kind of Maneuver than Strike or Grab or can be combined with those Maneuvers (or even requires to be combined with another Maneuver), it's still a Maneuver. I don't really see a problem with the cost. It's up to the GM to decide if any individual purchase is abusive or not. Yeah Valdorian Age! This kind of thing is just logical to me. PSLs should apply to any penalty outside the control of the character, including Time Penalties and other circumstantial penalties. VA is just a published source that agrees with me on this.

  13. Re: Few Questions about Sweep, and Combat Skill levels Sorry for my tardiness on this. I just got promoted at work and as a result my schedule is massively bass ackwards. Exactly. Nothing random. Completely within the character's control. The difference between Sweep and targeting a Hit Location is that Hit Location is a specialized form of the size/range penalty. It's fixed only because it's standard and predictable, much the same way as the range penalty for hitting someone between 4" and 8" is. And even then, there is some variation because the target need not be human shaped and have the same Hit Location penalty for each location.

  15. Re: Few Questions about Sweep, and Combat Skill levels If you notice, only the Sweep/Rapid Fire involves a "random/variable" element complete under the attacker's control. That is hardly variable. The attacker chooses his penalty; it is not applied to him. Hit Location penalties are similar, but are in fact based on size/range penalties. They are just more specialized and thus more predictable. And I can buy an HA +1d6 AE Hex, AF10, NND for only 15 points and the only thing that's stopping me if the same thing that'll stop you from abusing the system by buying CSLs with Hipshot. And if you're saying you can buy PSLs with Sweep/Rapid Fire, what's wrong with charging more for it?

Re: Material Science I can understand your disagreement, but I have yet to encounter a game that did not, at least on some level, incorporate common sense into it's play, or otherwise make play more enjoyable/effective when common sense was applied. This includes logic games like chess by definition. What is common sense if not a subconscious application of logic?
