  2. Re: I love me some xenomorphs! She was in the midst of laying eggs when Ripley arrived, so it's conceivable one could have still been in the oven and she laid it before attacking Bishop. The idea that it was thoroughly hidden, though, is a stretch. More likely it would have left an epic slime trail. Probably best to retcon out that shot of the egg and say it was a facehugger along for the ride. That one is feasible.
  3. Re: Parallel Universe Star Wars I like this idea. Luke as a clueless prince and Leia as a rough-and-tumble kid from Tatooine.
  4. Re: I love me some xenomorphs! It's not that bioengineered aliens aren't scary as such. For me the underlying horror is that something so coldly terrifying evolved naturally out in the dark of space. It's not a weapon, it wasn't designed to be nasty, it's not even evil - it just is. Suddenly the universe is much scarier and we're just a link in the middle of the food chain. Not that I have a problem with them being used as biological weapons, of course. Just that they were manufactured as such. I'm sure she was careful, but those critters are pretty small. I'm sure they can hide like cockroaches in places she can't look, especially in a ship as cluttered and unfamiliar as that one.
  5. Re: I love me some xenomorphs! Not really. Nor have I ever liked that interpretation. Too easy and too not-scary.
  6. Re: "Neat" Pictures Oh man, I was racking my brain trying to remember where that was from!
  7. Re: I love me some xenomorphs! So I'm reading through discussions about Aliens (here and elsewhere) and in large part it seems like the creatures themselves aren't so much of interest as the ubercool futuristic warriors fighting them. When Aliens first came out, while I enjoyed the heck out of it, I did lament that the creatures went from "the perfect organism" to, effectively, video game targets. Space marines, not monsters, became the selling point. (Which is one reason I enjoyed Alien3's brutal return to form.) I've not followed other media about them except the movies, but judging by various fan discussions over the years, my lamentation from 1986 has been borne out. Is that true? Is the biggest appeal of the aliens now that they're worthy adversaries for Predators and Terminators and cyborgs and superheroes and various space badasses? Have they transformed from a horrifying monster to a combat framework into which you insert your favorite super warrior?
  8. Re: Pseudo-elf race as monsters Those weren't elves. They were elfs.
  9. Re: Pseudo-elf race as monsters The Rankin-Bass Hobbit cartoon was my first exposure to elves. "Monstrous" has always been a legitimate take on them in my mind, to the point that the thread title gave me cognitive dissonance.
  10. Re: "Neat" Pictures Those are the worst cold sores I've ever seen.
  11. Re: I love me some xenomorphs! I'd forgotten until Aliens was on TV the other day that "xenomorph" was actually just some cheesy generic bureaucrat-speak for "alien."

  14. Re: "Neat" Pictures They win World Alpha Geek status for the foreseeable future.
  15. Re: Predators vs. You I am so there.
  16. Re: Laser launched rockets That's what prompted my question. For the amount of power we're talking about, it seems like some sort of railgun would be infinitely more efficient.
  17. Re: Laser launched rockets In what context would this be the most efficient way to get something aloft? Honest question; I don't know the limits of the concept.
  18. Re: Predators vs. You The cast is intriguing, though the movie looks pretty cheesy. But potentially quite fun.
  19. Re: I love me some xenomorphs! Oo, xenomorph dragon! I may have to dig out my drawing table.
  20. Re: A nore reasonable option The speed of Friday Night Lights is a universal constant.
  21. Re: A nore reasonable option As long as we're passing laws that prevent flying vehicles from veering off course and crashing, can we do the same for cars? I never realized that was an option. This changes everything.
