  2. Re: "Neat" Pictures Apparently eating a bike made the tree tired.

  4. Re: Matriarchial Societies Women significantly outnumbering men comes to mind.
  5. Re: Matriarchial Societies You might start by determining what factors would create a matriarchal society.
  6. Re: Kids from C.A.P.E.R. Man, who would think to? Oh who am I kidding. Of course someone's written them up! I loved that show as a kid. All what, five episodes or something?
  7. Re: Jokes They could learn something from Santa and the Easter Bunny. At least those guys show up sometimes.
  8. Re: Satellite I had two still running thirty minutes shy of twenty four hours, but I had to reboot. Try this: Leave your mouse pointer in one position somewhere near the orbit of the moon, then start clicking rapidly about five seconds before the moon crosses nearby. Interesting simulation.
  9. Re: Satellite I've got three that are approaching seven hours and four more that are thirty minutes behind them. (All are clockwise. My CCW satellites didn't make it to three hours.) I'm off work soon, so I'll leave them overnight and see if any are still alive in the morning.
  10. Re: Satellite Never mind, the sun has nothing to do with the Earth-Moon Lagrange points. Brain fart.
  11. Re: Satellite I've got clusters of six and fifteen going. The former has been going ninety minutes, the latter sixty. I suspect the extremely exaggerated radius of the moon makes it impossible.
  12. Re: Satellite Clockwise orbits are relatively easy to make stable. Counterclockwise orbits are really hard (or else I haven't figured out the secret yet).
  13. Re: A Thread for Random Musings I took my kids to see the Blue Angels last weekend. At this weekend's show, one of the planes crashed and killed the pilot. It's a horrible thing to happen at all, but thank God it didn't happen last week.
  14. Re: How to get swords on your starship So add a high-tech electric/shaped explosive/chemical/pharmaceutical/nanoscale/what-have-you element. It stands to reason that if you want to harm a person but not the ship, you don't rely on kinetic force alone to deliver damage. (That would be "clumsy and random." )
  15. Re: [Video] Nazi Robot Attack Worrying about an incorrect rank insignia seems funny to me in a video about a giant Nazi robot wading through the ocean to stomp a military base. Yeah, I had to rewind to make sure I saw what I thought I saw.
  16. Re: How to get swords on your starship It's reasonable to assume that handguns for spacefaring combat will be designed for increased safety in that environment.

  18. Re: Nazi Robot Attrack Video That is just all kinds of right!
  19. Re: How to get swords on your starship Another possibility is to have swords be ubiquitous for practical reasons. Say for instance that pretty much all crewmen aboard a spaceship (or at a remote colony, etc.) carry configurable tools made of some lightweight, intelligent nanomaterial. Such tools can be programmed to form into countless shapes for various practical jobs. They can also be programmed to shape themselves into melee-type weapons. Since everybody has one, they eventually become commonplace as weapons. They could even morph themselves during a fight as part of an informal (or even formal) martial art. Again, they wouldn't take the place of guns as such, but if everyone knows how to use one, any tough guy worth his salt would be handy with them. Plus they could be difficult for automatic security systems to detect, as opposed to the very obvious gunfire/lasers/etc.
  20. Re: Astrogator's Handbook So if we discover some weird organism living on a gas giant, the implication is that it represents an even more common class of life form?
  21. Re: Astrogator's Handbook Heck, in the big picture, maybe we're the exotic extremophiles.
