  1. I enjoy running in historical settings -- early 17th century, late 18th century, early 19th century, but I've never felt compelled to make it absolutely 100% accurate. My last campaign was straight-up historical (GURPS 1793) with dashes of the Scarlet Pimpernet ("could have been" history). I found myself wishing for magic and/or psionics by about the 10th game, though. -Shelley
  2. Re: Re: Nero Wolfe The books are great. My husband's best friend found out I was interested in them, and out of the blue shipped me his collection -- I devoured them! They're fast reads, very fun -- may make you want to start wearing a fedora, even. -Shelley
  3. Here are some... Though no Austin Powers (at least, I don't think so!) They're for 4th edition, and were compiled by many, many people. http://www.mactyre.net/scm/deejay/champs/writeups.html -Shelley
  4. Nero Wolfe It's not pulp per se, but Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe stories were written over a forty year span, and are rich in period detail. That I was devoted to the A&E show (now on DVD!) has nothing to do with my crush on Timothy Hutton as Archie Goodwin. Well...OK. Maybe a little. -Shelley
  5. Re: QM's U:DoF review Steve *is* a machine. We had to take our SUV to the store to cart home recent HERO purchases! Matthew saw the HERO rack and blurted, "Good God! Is this *all* Steve Long?" -Shelley
  6. You rascal! You always make me blush! I'm studying as fast as I can! Really -- and I'm more than halfway done with this cursed JD, too (less than three semesters to go...) But for what it's worth, I'm constantly thinking of new PRIMUS things (that is, when I'm not working on Regency HERO between papers). -Shelley
  7. The gaming story was bad enough, but this....this is ridiculous! I've been hit on, but nothing so bad (thank heaven). -Shelley
  8. Most of my awful gaming experiences centered around a "gaming spouse" who really didn't want to be roleplaying -- she just didn't want hubby to be doing something without her. There were the tantrums...the pouting...she wasn't content until the evening was ruined for all of us. Case in point: we were playing a GURPS Black Ops game that her hubby was running. He asked me to make a role or two for the situation the character was in - and his wife interjected with, "I want to make a roll, too." He tried to ignore this, but she inisted. Finally he said, "But your character isn't even there." She said, "Fine. If I can't make a roll, then I'm leaving." (The game was in her house.) Sad, but even though he was a good friend, when she finally succeeded in severing their relationship from us altogether ...well...I wasn't overwhelmingly heartbroken. Gaming was much saner afterwards. -Shelley
  9. It is such a blast. In fact, it's such a blast that I think I'm going to get my parents to play it the next time they visit! (Considering my dad is learning how to roleplay John Adams for money...go figure!) -Shelley
  10. I'm not so sure about Munchausen HERO -- I think the stats would be constantly changing, as the story required -- but the regular game is a BLAST to get drunk -- er, to play. -Shelley

    P&P games

Re: Re: **sigh** LOL! My favorite is: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." -Shelley

**sigh** When I first saw the topic, my heart leapt! I thought he meant Jane Austen's "Pride & Prejudice..." -Shelley
  13. I was guestimating based on the time I spend preparing/researching, as well as the time spent in-game doing whatever it is. It's much more important to me to have established the why of what's happening than how many dice of damage the baddie does. (What do the players remember when all is said and done, after all?) -Shelley
  14. I think I'm about 80% RP to 20% combat. Combat is important to include, I think, but it should always be related to the story being told. No, I take it back. It should be completely dependent on the story, or else it's just gratuitous violence. All IMHO, of course. -Shelley

    GI Joe?

This is so shameless -- do forgive me! How about taking a look at the PRIMUS Sourcebook? It's chock full of government-issued goodness. -Shelley (If I do say so myself!)
  16. Sure, sounds good to me. And as someone who lived in Northern Nevada long enough to be considered native (8 years), I know for a fact it's a perfect place to set adventures -- I've done it myself, many times. -Shelley
  17. SP campaigns are a *lot* of fun! GURPS Scarlet Pimpernel is a good sourcebook for that. (And Age of Napoleon, recently out). *sigh* Someone needs to run a historical game for *me*! -Shelley
  18. Re: Re: Oh, Lordie! I know -- trust me, it was the first thing Matthew checked! He will smugly remind me that it's been "fixed" if the topic ever comes up. -Shelley
  19. Oh, Lordie! This was the source of one of the most heated arguments Matthew and I (married over 10 years) have had, a long ways back. (Well, not terribly heated, but it was a long-running argument!) He was very lenient with Diving for Cover (based on what happens in movies); I was very strict (what it says in the rules). The only way we could compromise was to let it work one way in my games and the other in his. -Shelley
  20. I'm in the if you want to keep it, you'll need to pay the points for it camp -- otherwise, you may lose it. (Of course, even if you do pay the points for it, you may lose it, but you'll end up getting it back.) -Shelley
  21. Gosh, you made me blush. The sad thing is that there seems to be one or two of us in any given gaming group -- not enough to make any of us happy, since we tend to be the ones running the historical games, not playing in them! -Shelley
  22. Very cool -- a great addition to any RH game! Just seeing that Dancing skill makes me grin. Maybe he ought to have some disease immunity, having spent so much time in India? [before I read the whole thing, as I scrolled down, I caught the words "yoga," "military," and "Boodles" all in one flash, and it led to a very interesting mental picture!] Oh! I had another idea: "Immunity to Smallpox" for those who've had the vaccine. Another thing to go on the RH list. -Shelley
  23. For others who might be interested, there's a great website about how to address every level of English nobility. I don't have the link handy, but I do know it's linked from my 1793 site: http://www.mactyre.net/shelley/1793 -Shelley
  24. A fair amount of that has gone on, too. -Shelley
  25. Thanks -- at least I nailed the decade . The Kestrel mysteries are cool. Kestrel is a dandy a la Beau Brummel, and he develops a penchant for investigating murders. There are only four books (the author died young, sadly). The first one has PoV issues (too much head-hopping) but she has it down to an art form by the last. You don't learn much about Kestrel during the course of the books, not til the end -- he's as much a mystery as the murders he solves. -Shelley
