A girl was bullied for liking Star Wars (which is insufficiently girly), so the cosplay group the 501st, aka Vader's Fist, gave her a set of stormtrooper armor, and took her backstage to meet Weird Al.

I don't know. The pantheon of potential geeky interests is so large, I doubt I could ever be sufficiently immersed in all their facets to be a geek to all of them.
I knew who winter soldier was and so forth, but I've never read Watchmen. (I'm used to the look of modern comic art, and the old stuff grates).
I can name lots of cards and their abilities from an obscure CCG called Anachronism, but I've never tried Magic or Pokémon. (I can name three)
I've played several pen and paper RPGs, but only DnD 3.5 and after. None of the advanced. I don't know THACO.
Nah, Geek is a word that has lost all meaning. the fandoms are too many and too large.

It's a new technology, and if it can be done for 25 bucks a test, it's about 5-10% of the price of current tests that do the same thing, so that's pretty cool.
How useful would it be? For high risk patients (like transplant patients) we already do this type of test, but that's not for diagnosis. It's for planning future treatment. The drawback of this new test (like the old tests) is that it relies on antibodies. Normally, it takes 2-3 weeks for your body to generate a measureable antibody response. So the test will tell you what you've had, but not necessarily what you have right now.
That could still be useful - especially as we collect more information on how individuals respond to infection and long term risks of infection - but probably won't have an immediate effect on medical practice.
Cheers, Mark

Friday’s ticker-tape parade in honor of the U.S. women’s national soccer team, which won the World Cup on Sunday, is the first such parade in New York to honor exclusively women since 1960.

I find the situation hilarious, to be honest, in a very dark way. People have this annoying tendency to conflate heredity, nationality, culture, and religion, call it "race", and use it to discriminate against each other. Race is meaningless. The president of the United States is black, right? No, he's at least as haole as he is black, genetically, yet somehow he's considered black because he got the hair and the melanin. Where I come from that's not black, that's hapa. There are numerous examples of black parents having children who could pass for white, and white parents having kids that could be mistaken for black. I personally have been mistaken for six different races. Yet you humans continue to insist on making instantaneous judgments based on appearance.
The saddest part for me is what's about to happen to this lady. It's incomprehensible to me that a white American would choose to be black. All that gets you is second-class citizenship and brutal police treatment. Yet this girl was obviously fascinated by black people and black culture, went to a mostly-black college, married a black man, ran the local NAACP chapter and by all accounts did a fine job. To use an awful term, she turned Indian. Then she got publicly outed by her own family, earned the hatred of African-Americans nationwide, and lost her job. So far.
But one thing she did do was blow up this whole stupid "race" idea. Kudos to her for that.

Ugh. Macro photography is HARD. really hard. I saw this beautiful Bold Jumping Spider (seriously, Bold is part of the name) on my stairs. Big as a dime, which is a lot when you aren't padding out your size with spindly legs. Anyway, I tried taking his picture, and I could. not. get. him. focused.
Sorry for the moaning. I'm sharing the pictures anyway.
