  1. +1 for Wild Cards.

-1 for Verhoeven's Starship Troopers movie. As a dark humor satire of military sci-fi it has watchable moments intermixed with moments of utter stupidity. As an adaptation of Heinlein's novel, it is an atrocious hatchet job.

@Spence: I had no idea the book had been altered by publishers. Who in the hell approved that? Surely not REH himself.

I know you meant RAH but I would seriously love to read a version of Starship Troopers written by Robert E. Howard.

  2. The last time that I watched Flash Gordon, I think that I ended up channeling my late wife, because I became extremely fascinated with the decor and the costuming*. The plot, not so much.

*When you're looking at an action scene, and all that you can think of is just how much work it was to sew on all of those bugle beads by hand, you've probably lived with a crafter.

I've been doing that for a while now. I can hardly watch a movie without wondering how much the sets cost to build and how they were built, who made the props, how many people it took to film the scene, and so on. In my case, I blame the special features on DVDS. Back in the days of VHS I didn't care about those things.

  3. I stopped reading the article when the writer mentioned the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams are in Saint Louis. So either this article is old or the reporter didn't bother to do any fact checking. If the latter is the case, I can't trust him. He probably made up the whole thing. Who knows what other crazy things he might say. I bet he thinks the Chargers are in L.A. too.

  4. Oi Hermit !

There are better things for us to worry about like three active hurricanes off your coast. Or the fact that we are not going to win the contest but are still taking part.

You heartless monster! Worried about the masses while Hermit continues to languish in obscurity? I question your very humanity, sir!
