Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Next up, let's go on a sea cruise!

Team Name: Defenders of the Sea

Members: 6 (+1?) (the latter is if someone wants to name/describe the team's base -- could be an undersea base, a recovered submarine, converted offshore oil rig, or what have you)

Theme: Sea/ocean theme (water, fish, coral, etc.).

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

The hero known as Narwhal was abandoned as a child on the shores of Baffin Island in Canada. Fortunately, the child was rescued and raised by Marcus O'Reilly, a lighthouse keeper who gave him the name Jonah. With grey skin, super strength, the ability to breathe and survive the cold, deep pressures of the ocean and a powerful horn jutting from his forehead (as opposed to the tusk of actual narwhals), to this day Jonah doesn't know if he's a mutant or something else entirely. Right now, he's torn between his loyalty to protecting Canada and staying fully with the Defenders of the Sea.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Five year old Eric Williams was at the beach with his family. An excellent swimmer, like most of his family, he was nevertheless pulled by a rip current out to sea (and after an exhausting search was assumed lost and drowned). He was found by a pod of friendly dolphins, and they helped keep him alive and eventually started raising them as one of their own. He became an even better swimmer, and his stamina grew to superhuman levels. He found he could hear the ultrasonic frequencies used by the dolphins, and could even echo them back; he learned their language (as well as those of various other cetacean species) and gained the ability to speak with them. Later he found that he could emit sonic blasts underwater. He can hold his breath for up to an hour, swim as fast as a dolphin, and can dive to great depths and return quickly to the surface with no ill effects.

Now twenty years old, he acts as protector of dolphins, whales, orcas, and other endangered sea life. He has come to the attention of the surface world, who have dubbed him the Dolphin.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Peter Ellington and Ricky Denham were best friends as kids. Growing up in Seaport, they loved boats and anything to do with them. Peter loved designing them; he kept notebooks full of doodled and scribbled designs of improbable boats (such as nuclear-powered hydrofoils, submarines with carrier decks and Jet Ski hangars and torpedo tubes that could launch friendly dolphins, and the like). Ricky loved the idea of sailing them. They made a pact, that one day Peter would design boats for real and Ricky would sail them. Eventually they would take degrees in marine engineering and naval architecture. They returned to Seaport after college to go to work for a small company, Morton Hydrodynamics. One day, the Morton facility came under attack by the New Peace Armada; Peter and Rick headed for their almost-finished creation, the Nautilus II. Using its weaponry to drive off the villains, they were nevertheless too late to save the facility, and Morton Hydrodynamics was destroyed. They now sail as part of the Defenders of the Sea, under the names Captain Danger (Rick) and the Engineer (Peter).

These can count as one member and optionally as the base (the destroyed Morton facility could now house the Nautilus II's secret submarine base, if the sub itself doesn't count as one).

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Well, since they're the Defenders of the Sea, they should have a Defender-like character...

Oceanographer Dr. Barry Nagle threw down the newspaper with disgust. Almost mockingly, the pages stayed open to the article on the oil company's lackluster attempts to contain the oil spill from the supertanker and clean up its effects on the enviornment. Dr. Nagle glared at it, then turned to open a window. Outside, he could hear the waves crashing against the ship's hull and the occasional call of a seagull. A breeze ruffled his long brown hair, and he heard the pages of the newspaper on the floor behind him flip in the wind. When he turned back, he saw that it now showed an article about the Champions. Intrigued (and with a mild feeling of fate's hand on his shoulder), Dr. Nagle picked up the paper to read about the superteam's latest success, stopping a group of supervillains from blowing up a chemical plant.

His eyes travelled to his filing cabinet. Atop it sat a brass helmet, part of an antique diving suit, and light from outside glinted off the glass faceplate, almost like it was winking at him. Ideas began to form in his head. Yes, it could be done. Like the well-known Defender, it was just a bunch of engineering challenges. Major challenges, to be sure, but not insurmountable.

After that, Nagle set to work. He procured use of a small lab at the oceanographic institute and began quietly stocking it. Cutting and welding equipment, electronic gear, diving and underwater sensing equipment, all made their way to the lab, most often under cover of night. Then, on a Saturday evening two months later, Dr. Nagle walked into the lab, but had anybody been around to observe, they would have seen the armored Cirripede walk out.

Compared to many armored superheroes and supervillains, his creation was crude and underpowered, but it was good enough to help foil an attempt by Nereid to sink a freighter a month later. This brought Cirripede to the attention of Defender, who contacted the fledgeling superhero and offered to help redesign and upgrade the suit. He has served as Nagle's mentor and trusted colleague ever since.

Years later, now in his Mark III Cirripede Armor, Nagle continues to defend the seas against threats both corporate and supervillainous. When he helped form a sea-based superteam, he proposed the name Defenders of the Sea as an acknowlegement of his friend and mentor's contributions to his own success.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

The rest of the team aren't sure where Harpoon came from. One of those teenagers who believes he's immortal, he's 19. He wears a wet suit and SCUBA gear (he claims to be SCUBA certified, leading Cirripede to quip "He's definitely certifiable"), carries a speargun, and drives a Jet Ski with a mounted harpoon gun (in fact, it's more like he pilots the Jet Ski, like a maniac). If the Defenders of the Sea had a B-team, he'd be on it (in fact, if they had a Z-team, he probably wouldn't make the B-team). Ordinarily they wouldn't have given him the time of day, except he did show up at just the right time to help take out an Aquadroid that would have otherwise killed Narwhal. Despite having no known superpowers (except maybe a little too much luck), whenever there's a villainous threat to the sea he dives into the fight with glee (no pun intended, and apparently I'm a poet and didn't even know it).

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

For the Defenders of the Sea, we have:

  • Narwhal
  • Dolphin
  • Captain Danger and the Engineer (I'm counting them as one) plus the Nautilus II
  • Cirripede
  • Harpoon

Anyone got one more?

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Tangaroa: for ages this powerful entity was the sea god of the Polynesians. He was happy to serve that role and gladly took the responsibilities, helping where needed and punishing where necessary. But then he was forgotten by his people. He took his canoe and journeyed on the oceans for countless decades. He hid from all ships he encountered and seldom set foot on any lands again. But now the time has come to act again. The oceans being under attack from civilization, something has to be done about it. The Defenders of the Sea were his natural choice. They would provide him with the means to bring back the harmony of nature.

Tangaroa is an alien being full of cosmic energy that he can use for various effects. He is immortal and does not need to eat and drink or sleep. He looks like an athletic muscular Polynesian (6'2''; 230 lbs.).

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Little is known about the hero who calls himself Mister D. K. His accent is unmistakeably Jamaican and he seems remarkably cheerful for a man who has shadow/darkness based powers. So long as he has access to any shadow, he can teleport to it. Likewise, he can temporarily blind an opponent. Needless to say, he's skilled in blindfighting and an expert in Capoeira. Direct sunlight seems to hurt and weaken him. The only cases that seem to anger him are the ones that involve drug violence.

Desaparecer (Vanish) - Juan Herrero is a private investigator from Puerto Rico. He can shapechange, taking any human form from 1 to 2 meters in height, of either sex (an extremely handy ability for a PI to have). He generally conserves mass, though can take on additional mass through water or animal protein, and occasionally shed it through water loss and/or waste disposal; in his base form he's 5'8" tall and about 150 pounds. His STR and BODY scores can vary based on his height and weight, and how much additional mass he has to redistribute and how much time has in which to do so.

Haven, is Warmblood a Bermudan or a Defender of the Sea?

Needs to be bigger than that. I'm 6'2" 230 and living in Tonga (for the time being)... I feel like a shrimp compared to these guys.

I like Tangaroa though, excellent choice.

Sorry for the confusion; the Forum timed me out before I could put in the full post.

Warmblood's a Defender of the Sea...full background to follow.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Cauteloso is a Cuban national who goes by several different names, depending on whether he's in Cuba or outside its borders. Most of his friends call him Pepe. He is able to become completely silent, and to extend this silence field just enough so that whatever he does to other things cannot be heard. Combined with lockpicking skills and the (trained) ability to hide very, very well, Cauteloso is an infiltration expert. He goes in, gets the information and gets out before most people even know he's there. He may or may not be an agent of the Cuban government--certainly they seem to turn a blind eye to his activities.

And the next group?

The Agents of Change, five people whose schtick revolves around transformation, either of themselves or others. They specialize in fighting those who use transformation abilities for evil.

The Weakness is Wyatt Ordell. He specializes in targeting a weak point in a target and changing the environment to suit. Armor needs batteries, batteries are dead. Psionic can't operate against sonics, sonic booms erupt. Martial Artists have problems with dex. He is even more effective against inaminate objects.

Periwinkle is a size-shifter, transforming herself from a range of 1 inch tall to 10 feet tall. Initially, she was courted by the Little Folk and she seemed amicable to causing mayhem, having no love for "norms". All that changed after her older brother (himself a mutant shapeshifter [any normal human ala Mystique]) was kidnapped. The Little Folk didn't give a damn about his disappearance. Not only that, but they then tried to kill Peri when she attempted to go her own way. The Agents saved her life. She stays with them for the time being, trying to tame her anger and hoping that she can still find her brother alive.

Opposite Day is an androgynous person of uncertain age who is always concealed under gray robes. His or her true motives and background are a mystery, though it usually acts on behalf of its teammates when together with them. Opposite Day can turn any dualistic concept into its opposite: Black/white, male/female, good/evil, parent/child, rich/poor, strong/weak, etc. Once a person or object is changed, it's stuck that way for exactly twenty-four hours. While body, mind and spirit are separate targets for transformation, Opposite Day is powerful enough to burden a target with multiple swaps one right after another. OD can also apparently teleport when no one is looking at it.

When not superheroing, Opposite Day uses its powers to teach seemingly random people valuable lessons about life. Thanks to this, it's hands down the least popular member of Agents of Change.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Apex takes on the abilities of the nearest, most powerful apex predator whether he wishes to or no. Taking on those abilities nearly always leads to obvious physical changes. Fortunately for him, he never takes on aspects that are more limiting than his natural human form.

Example abilities

  • Black Mamba: While in Kenya, Apex found himself with a cobra-like neck flap, black mouth, sinuous torso, and fangs filled with one of the deadliest neurotoxins known.
  • Cheetah: On a mission to Iran, Apex grew a tail, semi-retractable claws, enlarged heart and lungs, and could accelerate from 0 to 60 faster than a sports car.
  • Komodo Dragon: A jaunt to Komodo Island led to Apex growing a very long tail, a mouthful of serrated teeth, a mouthful of nasty bacteria, and a long, forked tongue.
  • Wolverine: A trip to Canada isn't just about maple syrup for Apex. Nope, he also enjoys powerful jaws, sharp claws, waterproof fur, and special molars that allow him to eat food that has frozen solid.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

When Daniel Larson was a child, all he ever wanted to be when he grew up was a doctor. Throughout school, he threw himself into his studies, excelling in everything but especially math and the sciences. He was on track to achieve his dream.

When Daniel was 15, he and his family were out shopping, when the Neo-Luddites attacked, their target a scientific display near the department store they were at; Daniel and his family, along with some other bystanders, were held hostage. The Crusaders came, stopped the Neo-Luddites, and saved all of the hostages.

Daniel's life continued as he had expected. In 1979, when Daniel was in his third year of medical school, a member of the Crusaders' Young Heroes Squad, an 11 year old girl calling herself Daisy Chain, was diagnosed with leukemia. Conventional medical treatments were ineffective due to her powers, and paranormal healing methods seemed only to accelerate the course of the disease. Within eight weeks, Daisy Chain was dead. (Many were devastated, as she was well loved by all, even the villains; the story stayed in the news the entire time, and when she died the entire supervillain community called a moratorium on all activity for a day. Even Rudra of the Children of Shiva was touched, which is not a thing that happens lightly. To this day, most supervillains consider August 16 to be a holiday, and will halt their schemes; those that don't are policed by the others.)

Daniel decided at that moment that his specialty would be paranormal medicine. The problem was that there were few resources on the subject; he would have to develop it himself. Which he did. This became his passion over the next 10 years; he studied not only at places like Johns Hopkins and the Mayo Clinic, but also with known paranormal scientists and engineers, learning everything there was to know about the superhuman body and its illnesses. He eventually gained the nickname "Dr. Super" despite having no powers whatsoever.

By this time he had written several books, including at least two textbooks, on medical issues related to paranormals, and the field was starting to grow.

Daniel handled his first transformation case about five years ago. A bystander was hit with a wayward transformation attack and turned to stone. Daniel happened to have information on file about the attacker (a villain named Stonemason), and so he set to work. Requesting samples of other items transformed by Stonemason, he discovered the presence of an isotope that had transmuted all carbon atoms into silicon. Through a great deal of work he was able to determine how to reverse the transformation, trying it first on several blades of grass, then a mouse (he was able to not only reverse the transformation but to bring back a healthy, living mouse) before attempting it on the person. He successfully reversed her transformation as well, making her the first of Stonemason's human victims ever to be returned to human form. Daniel immediately published his findings, and before long was considered the expert on transformations as well as paranormal medicine.

Given time, Daniel can reverse nearly any non-magical transformation against a human target, and is now studying magical transformations. He is also the world's leading authority on paranormal medicine, and has successfully treated long term, debilitating, and/or potentially fatal illnesses in dozens of heroes and villains over the years. He has been declared off-limits as a target by many villains, and several years ago a well known villain group even cooperated with a hero group to rescue him when another villain threatened a bus he happened to be on.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Ahhh! No, I didn't. :) Since we don't have anything yet on the lighter side....

The X-Y's

Five members whose powers all relate to gender in some way, either altering, hiding, or affecting one or the other, or in some other way.

Obviously that one's not grabbing anyone. How about the Stellars? Five members who are either aliens, human-alien hybrids, or humans with alien technology.

Sorry, from work, I don't always get to post as often as I'd like. I missed the XY post until after you'd changed it.

The crash happened around 2 a.m. outside the sleepy town of Millinocket, Maine, and anyone awake at that hour would have seen the bright light cross the sky, followed by a brilliant flash to the west of town. A police officer, directed to the scene to investigate whether it was a crashed military jet, instead found a six meter-long egg-shaped vehicle of obviously alien origin. Well, it was egg-shaped before its crash; now, parts of it were rather scrambled.

As the police officer called for backup (preferrably from the Air Force, Marines, National Guard, heck, throw in the Coast Guard as well), a humanoid being stepped from the wreckage. Despite the cop's drawn gun, the being approached until it was less than three meters away (and extremely close to getting shot). "Izkap pareen epto prismangrapor? Meztapa mok tooke prazatz."

"Listen," stammered the cop. "I don't know what you are or where you're from, but you'd better hold it RIGHT THERE, or I'm gonna have to shoot you!"

The being adjusted dials on a box on its belt. "Ah! Sol-3 Amerenglish!" It consulted a display on its left arm. "Then you must be a USan! Or is it USAnder? Ah, no matter. May I use your hyperspatial communications array? My ship is badly injured and I will need some assistance."

By the time everything was sorted out, it was learned that the being (of an androgenous race far across the galaxy) is named simply Zin. Zin is an amateur explorer and xenobotanist. With no hyperspatial communications available, Zin joined the Stellars to pass the time while waiting for one of its race to come to Earth. Zin has the innate abilities to telepathically communicate with plants and survive in practically any environment, as well as devices such as a universal translator (which doesn't always work properly), a protective field generator, antigravity belt, and various sensory and scanning devices.

It should be noted that Zin is much more interested in Earth's plants than its humans (to be honest, Zin doesn't even really connect well with others of its own species), and takes a very dim view of people causing environmental damage.
