Corn used to mean something different than maize. The Roman diet description is reflecting the older use of the term.

 

Indeed it did. But the "researcher" at the linked site clearly got confused by references to "corn." Hence the statement that the Roman army used to eat corn, wheat and barley. I guess that the writer could argue that "by corn I meant oats and whatever," but that's a defence worthy of the Interwebs.
