Re: CHAMPIONS OF THE NORTH -- What Would You Like To See?

Hey' date=' doesn't Canada have a couple of Loch Ness Monster-type beasties, or so sayeth the legends? I could see something done with that.[/quote']

Ogopogo and Manipogo are the only two I remember, with Ogo having once been pretty nasty back in the day. He supposedly ate any Indian or white man who tried sailing across the lake without tossing a puppy or kitten over the side.

I am going to have to agree with the notion that something be said about Windsor [my hometown] during the destruction of Detroit.

As far as history goes, Windsor is a great location/area for many a type of game. RumRunners, secret tunnels across the border [under the river], Cheif Tecumseh, Fort Detroit was once owned by Canada, Highest number of bars per square mile, a casino, a port, surrounded by water on three sides, the great lakes, Canadian Club is made there, lots of mafia connections, highest number of assaults per capita, Automotive capitol of Canada, the busiest border crossing in North America, Polaris Recording studio [motown greats would come across to record], first trolley system in Canada...

I'm sure there's lots more that can be said of it, but all in all a great city to adventure in.

Kittens and puppies? Ok this goes too far. If you put this guy in the book, my character is going to have to stake out that lake, wrestle this guy ashore and then set fire to his head.

How is it I manage to never see these threads until two or three months after they have been running?

It is probably too late to throw this out, but I'd like to see something along the Maine/Canada border, particularly Old Sow in an official setting. You can check out my Digital Hero Article on Downeast Maine for information on that.

Re: CHAMPIONS OF THE NORTH -- What Would You Like To See?

This is a really cool idea. This is also my first post to this or any other thread so bear with me if I repeat something someone else has said.

I noticed that some folk mentioned aboriginal folklore. There are precedents for this in other SH literature originating from the States. Wendigo springs to mind. You may remember him as a bone white sasquatch-looking fellow in Marvel comics. The orginal story is far more interesting. According to First Nations legend, the Wendigo is an evil spirit that inhabits the body of those who commit suicide. Good for a dark campaign with an arcane bent.

Other aboriginal legends, such as Thunderbird and Manitou, might also be of interest. Gichi Manitou is more of an All-Father figure and may not be suitable for a SH campaign. Thunderbird is also a spirit who may possess a human avatar, ala Isis (remember her? god I am so old!) and so would work into a typicla SH campaign more easily.

Aside from aboriginal myth, Canada has a rich history associated with those of Euopean descent. More recently (post WWII), more Canadian imigrants have arrived from Asia, Africa and The Carribean. These people have brought with them relements of their respective cultures, including their own legends and histories. Of course there is also the Anglo-Francophone conflict that has been at the heart of Canadian politics for decades. In any event, pointing out our multi-cultural nature, as opposed to the American melting pot model, is crucial to understanding Canadian culture. Understanding Canadian culture will of course give CotN a verisimilitude that can only enhance a campaign set in the Great White North.

Lest some folks regard Canadians as hewers of wood and drawers of water, it is important to point out that Canada is primarily an urban nation. Over 90% of Canadians live in cities within 200 km (look it up!) of the American border. We have technology on par with the best the rest of the world has to offer. Lots for a superhero to do in Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver. Windsor is an important border city as well.

So, until Bob and Doug MacKenzie either drown in a vat of Molson Canadian or have heart attacks from eating too much back bacon, make mine Champions!

Welcome Valkyrie... er, Captain Kaboom!

...the Wendigo is an evil spirit that inhabits the body of those who commit suicide. Good for a dark campaign with an arcane bent.

This is good, I like it. Always up for some Buffy the Vampire vibe. Hmm, maybe if the Wedigo is not a single spirit, but a class of spirits, or a condition.

Wendigo could be a kind of frozen northern vampire. Not urbane or smart, but vicious and deadly. Fighting these could be rough going for a Dark Champion level character.

Other aboriginal legends, such as Thunderbird and Manitou, might also be of interest. Gichi Manitou is more of an All-Father figure and may not be suitable for a SH campaign. Thunderbird is also a spirit who may possess a human avatar, ala Isis (remember her? god I am so old!) and so would work into a typical SH campaign more easily.

This is all fine. At least mention it in the book, the GM can look stuff up on wikipedia and decide if it needs to be written in. But the more NPCs the better, imho.

And lots more good stuff besides. Definitely include as much culture and demographics as possible, I would have assumed that the population was much more spread out, like the US, and divided between the two coasts like the US. What the heck does Canada *do* the the parts that aren't within 200km of the US border?

Re: CHAMPIONS OF THE NORTH -- What Would You Like To See?

I'd be curious to see more details about Windsor and how Detroit's transformation into Millenium City changed it.

Also: I'd like to see a breakdown by province/territory, the same way districts in Hudson City each get a short chapter (the chapters needn't all be the same length). Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary are the most prominent cities, so they might be worth a detailed look at too. As the capital, Ottawa is worth a mention, and Halifax is one of the oldest cities (with plenty of material for a Horror campaign, thanks to all the ghost stories). Alert is another cool (actually cold) location that might deserve some exploration.

An adventure that spans from Coast to Coast... to Coast would be a great idea too.

I'd like to see how UNTIL integrates into Canada, since I suspect that us Canadians wouldn't feel the need for a PRIMUS-equivalent to counter it.

Re: CHAMPIONS OF THE NORTH -- What Would You Like To See?

I have several ideas. The Wendigo idea above is a good one, explaining Sasquatch might be another. Why not take this as an opportunity to get into Indian or Innuit shamanism for a small chapter? Maybe an Amerind Villian that caused the Ice Ages. Good Epic Villians make for a good adventure. Players like nothing better than saving the world. Perhaps a pathway to the Inner world or a dimensional gate in all that wilderness. Maybe this is where a dimensional warlord or aliens would stage their invasion.

Why Canada? I know why. But you have to have some tidbits in there to sell it "Why" to us Players. What makes Canada unique in the Superhuman world? That is what you have to figure out.

I don't know. I think my gut's telling me "Kingston". (Or maybe lunch is disagreeing with me).

And for the criminally insane: just north of Toronto. Markham Asylum.

BCing you

You really want to build a Super Prison near a Major Population Center?

And for the criminally insane: just north of Toronto. Markham Asylum.

Naaaah too easy.

Re: CHAMPIONS OF THE NORTH -- What Would You Like To See?

The military prison near Edmonton, known as "Club Ed" might be a good location for unpowered criminals, but with all that unpopulated land in the North, an international Stronghold might be a good idea (and brings in foreign money! Outsource your national supervillain incarceration problems with us, eh?).

Markham is an excellent location for an asylum. One of those huge warehouse complexes (like the IBM building) would be a cool self-contained clinic.

Re: CHAMPIONS OF THE NORTH -- What Would You Like To See?

Hey, Scott! Hope it's not too late to mention, but there is one thing I'd like to point out about my home city (Edmonton) that should get the attention of most of the people on this forum - our official slogan...

I dunno. I just enjoy that. I figured I should at least bring it up...

;)
