I've read some of the Phantom. The series I'm traying to recall the title of actually came out just a few years ago, and I thought it was by Image Comics. It was a British secret agent, something like Bond. When one died, a new agent was given the identity.

You're thinking of the series "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" from Crossgen. I can't remember the agent mantle that it used, but I remember that the hook of the series itself was that a woman was assuming the agent mantle at the start of the series.

My friends and I have always gone with the notion that the 00 status (only 9 of them at any one time) came with a premade secret ID (ie 007 is Admiral James Bond) created and maintained by MI-6. We feel most agencies work this way, and curiously, if you think about it from the books, this theory is also held in the Jason Bourne books, where that is just one of his identities and no one knows who he really is.

Obviously I agree with you on the possibility of a rotated ID. But to clarifiy, there agents designated as 0011, 0012, and 0013.

Something vaguely like that is used in "Algernon Files: the Fires of War", in the form of the character the Silent Knight.

 

Basically, the Silent Knight seems to be a real super agent: incredibly skilled in all areas, impossible to kill, seems to be everywhere at once. . . because "he" is actually a team of twelve OSS elite badasses, who've been trained to use the same physical mannerisms, and are dressed in the same identical outfit.

Not squeamish? I've read all the books and there was at least twice that Bond had the chance to kill someone early in the story and he didn't take the chance simply because he didn't want to shoot them in the back. One I recall off the top of my head was Scaramanga in The Man With the Golden Gun. Bond knew who the man was, knew what he was guilty of (among other things, killing fellow agents) and DIDN"T TAKE THE SHOT. I was almost screaming at the damned book (yeah, I get a little too into my reading at times) "SHOOT HIM!" But no, Bond wouldn't do it because he didn't feel it was "sporting". You're a f**king assassin pal. It's what you do.

 

(I guess thechnically this really isn't "squeamishness" but it still annoyed the crap out of me when I read it. If I've misremembered any of the above please feel free to correct me. It's been a little while since I've read the books.)

Bond is sent after Scaramanga because M considers Bond to be 'washed up' after the SMERSH brainwashing events post- You Only Live Twice. In reality it's a suicide mission and Bond knows it. Bond wants to go face-to-face with Scaramanga rather than simply blow him away in order to validate his 00 rating. Getting info is an added extra.

That character's name was Jack Wade. He pretty much served the same function as Felix, who hadn't been seen on film since losing his legs to a shark in License to Kill.

Felix returns in Casino Royale, played by Jeffrey Wright. If the next film is a remake of Live and Let Die, you can look forward to him losing his legs to a shark in that one too. Baker played "General" Whitaker, a Machiavellian arms dealer, in The Living Daylights. I think I saw him in Goldeneye, but I'm not sure who he played.
