Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

I watched The Battle for Terra. :thumbdown

Earthlings haven't just exhausted their own planet, but Mars and Venus as well, then they blow them all up in a war over the remaining resources? Then it's more efficient to travel across the stars so they can take someone else's world rather than exploit the resource-rich asteroid belt or the even richer Oort cloud? Do we really need to keep playing this "Humans baaad!" meme over and over and over? This could have been a much better movie if they hadn't gone for the easy "Military guys are just power-hungry murderers waiting for a chance to take over and rule" theme.

Other than that I thought it was enjoyable. :ugly:

The rest of the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series, Shoscombe Old Place through The Cardoard Box (which closed out the series).

Futurama -- from the beginning of season one, Space Pilot 3000 through the third film, Bender's Game.

Outsourced episode 09 (Temporary Monsanity).

At the moment, the Charlie's Angels film from 2000 is just ending.

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

Tsui Hark's Vampire Hunters -- My expectations were dashed when it turned out he was only the producer. While interesting in parts, I found the story to be somewhat disconnected. More time needed to be spent introducing characters, especially since you have the master, four students, and two love interests. The vampire was suitably horrific, and any FH GM could get a lot of milage out of adapting his powers to those of a fantasy lich or wright.

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

Zombieland -- it was great fun. I need to do a character sheet for Tallahassee. I also find that the idea of the "infected" as opposed to "undead" zombie has a lot of potential for different settings. For example' date=' I could easily see some sort of bio-terror weapon getting out of hand and turning people into monsters in my [i']Kazei 5[/i] setting. Thus allowing one to have an animepunk zombie holocaust!
Zombieland was great fun. Really a nifty little zombie flick, with nary a chill to be seen. It was just funny, or adrenalizing, or cool, depending on where in the movie you were.

Following the theme, I watched the first 22 minutes of The Omega Man, Chuck Hestons 1970's take on I Am Legend. Holy cow was that awful. Sweet mother of pearl was that a bad movie. Bad. Really bad. Poorly thought out, at the very least, and then just plain awful. In fairness, it might improve, but having met the bad guys and developed a deep and abiding scorn for the entire plot, I decided to leave that movie in Netflix where it belongs.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind -- 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition

Disc 03 of 03 includes:

The director's cut of CE3K (some additions for the special edition were removed), part three of the documentary The Making of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (which had been produced for the special edition), Steven Spielberg: 30 Years of Close Encounters, a version of the theatrical preview Watch the Skies, and a trailer for the 30th Anniversary set.

The set includes a fold-out with a poster for the film on one side, and a feature comparison timeline on the other. The timeline notes scenes that were added or removed, depending upon which version of the film one looks at.

There is also a collector's book in the set, containing a number of production photos, quotes, and biographical info on major figures from the cast & crew.

I got to see the theatrical release back in 1977, when I'd made the mistake of reading the novelization first -- I learned not to do that after this film. I don't think I got to see the special edtion outside of home video.

Yeah, I just watched Omega Man on Netflix instant.

While it was pretty *meh* and I hate to admit it... but it's probably the closest movie adaptation of Matheson's book.

Did you get to the Satanic Hippy Vampire Cult before you quit?

That was EXACTLY where they lost me - at the Satanic Albino Luddite Hippy Vampires in sunglasses and black robes. I could forgive the pedestrians and oncoming traffic in the opening sequence, albeit begrudgingly. I could forgive the lack of calamitous debris on all but one block of the abandoned city. I could not forgive the bad story, or even the mediocre story badly told.

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

Superman - The Ultimate Max Fleischer Cartoon Collection

The latest version on DVD of this series of short films that were originally seen in movie theaters from 1941-1943.

Included is a 'booklet' (really a fold-out) with some information about the series.

Extras on the DVD include a section called Behind the Cape, a synopsis of each episode with bits of trivia; the Warner Brothers cartoon Snafuperman from 1944; biographies of the voice actors, Superman, and Max Fleischer; a trailer for the Kirk Alyn Superman serials from 1948; and a telephone interview with actress Joan Alexander (Lois Lane).

As I type this: Hardware Wars -- the earliest fanfilm/parody that I know of, from 1978. I got to see this originally way back when cable TV was a new & rare thing.

Earlier today (an eight hour day with one call) -- Astro Boy (2009), Alice in Wonderland (2010), and The Kennel Murder Case (1933).

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

Missed Young Justice on the TV, saw it on Youtube (It maybe down by now) . I really really liked it. The teens kick ass but even they admit they could really use the help of their mentors at least once in the episode. It's a good set up by the end of things.

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

Frozen - a pretty good suspense/horror movie about three people trapped on a ski-lift throught a combination of bad luck and their own stupidity.

Yes, there are some plot holes.

Yes, we as gamers could have figured out 10 solutions to their problem before we started to get cold.

Still, not at all bad and a nice alternative to the slasher/torture porn films that seem to comprise nearly all recent horror.

KA.
