Re: REH Out of Copyright and Online

Not all of Howard's work is PD , this article http://www.robert-e-howard.org/AnotherThought4revised.html might be of interest to some who are into the in's and out's of that.

The on-line stories are generally thought to be versions that have been badly edited in parts though to the casual reader they are probably fine . If , however , any of you are interested in getting the books I recommend the Del Rey series of Conan , Kull , Solomon Kane and Bran Mak Morn . Many of the stories have been reproduced from Howard's manuscripts or pulp appearances without the editing / re-writing etc. especially on the Conan stories by DeCamp etc. See http://www.randomhouse.com/author/results.pperl?authorid=52853

Many of Howard's other stories have been reprinted in the last few years by Bison Books and Wildside Press also.

Re: REH Out of Copyright and Online

That explains the sudden rush of Conan books in the past few years as they tried to milk it while they still could.:straight:

Excellent news! Thanks for letting us know Von D-Man!

Rob

Not really , the recent books are the first for many years to feature _only_Howard's stories as the prevous owners of Conan were more interested in producing their own inferior pastiches than promoting Howard sadly.

Huge REH fan, here. Huge. :straight:

Shouldn't The God in the Bowl be there in the Conan stories?

"God in the Bowl," wasn't published within REH's lifetime, so I it doesn't benefit from the opened coyright. There are a bunch of stories like this... like "Frost Giant's Daughter," though you can find the same story in the version titled, "Gods of the North," which was publish, but had it's character's names changed. Likewise, you can not get the classic Kull story, "By this Axe I Rule," but you can read the Conan rewrite, "Phoenix on the Sword."

All of these stories have been open copyrighted in Australia for some time now, btw.

The ABSOLUTE best thing about the opened copywrites, is that you now have access to stuff (big obscure stuff) that will probably never see the light of day in published compilations. Specifically, neat stuff that should be in Conan compilations, but aren't... like, "People of the Dark," the first REH story to feature a reaver named Conan (a Gael if I recall) who swears by a god named Crom... and "Haunter of the Ring," which features the serpent ring of Thoth-Amon in the hands of a modern-day sorcerer.

Re: REH Out of Copyright and Online

I'm pretty sure this is in the Bran Mak Morn collection.

I don't have it so I wouldn't know. However, it doesn't fall under the 'Bran' lists in either D-Man's above link or the Gutenburg-Australia site. More importantly, it's not in the newest 'comprehensive' Conan compilation, which is otherwise pretty darn complete.

Well, both wikisource and gutenburg rely on people to type them out in e-format and submit them. Until someone does... they don't have it.
