Power Suit examples

Recommended Posts

I've been RPG'ing for a while, but mostly D&D, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, various D20, etc.

Champions is rather new to me and being older (and having 3 kids of my own now) doesn't leave me the time to really absorb the system.

I am in a casual game where I am playing a character who's powers are all in his power suit. Basic Iron Man. But I have been trying to personalize/make unique, mainly around the area of that the concept behind the majority of his armor/powers stem from some form of force manipulation (gravity, magnetism, whatever, haven't picked yet).

Point is most of his ed/pd is force field, etc and his weapons systems will be created through this force. I had set it up using a Multipower pool, but my GM has been suggesting that a VPP would be a better path. When we both have time, he will help me work on it, but in the mean time, could people post or point me to examples of power suit characters.

I have googled intensively, and been searching this forum, but there seems to be a lack of example power suit configurations.

Can you guys help? The more examples I can see of the implementations, the better/faster I can see the possibilities.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Power Suit examples

If you can pick up the following books:

UNTIL Superpowers Database I + II (highly recommended for prebuilt powers)

Champions (has a good bit on all Archetypes, including Power Armor)

Conquerors, Killers, And Crooks (a number of villains are Power Armor Villains that can help you)

Though, mostly anyon can be turned into a Power Armor Character by applying OIF to the Powers.

Re: Power Suit examples

Ok, possibly a limitation in my ability to search the forums :(, but I was trying power armor and power suit, and what I would get was messages that had the word power and the word armor, but not as a unit (which is quite a bit), but quoting it "power armor" would not force the words together.

I will try your search terms and thank you for the information.

I would still ask that anyone willing to post or point in the proper direction further examples, I would greatly appreciate it.:help:

Re: Power Suit examples

Sounds like you want to use an Elemental Control, with either Only in Heroic ID or an OIF focus. You could also use a Multipower or a VPP, but Elemental Control seems to be the best choice with what you want to do.

You can also use Only in Heroic/OIF and No Figured Characteristics if you want your character to have a particularly high CON or STR, which will shave a few CP off for you as opposed to buying them normally.

Re: Power Suit examples

Bluefire, WOW. Thank you. What you had as the idea for the character is right down the line over here with the gadgeteer concept. For me it is supposed to represent him constantly tinkering with it, making changes in relation to what has happened in the campaign. I started looking at multiform, and then backed out, with my head spinning. Lets see if I can figure out how to post what my first swipe at it looks like.

Background: Tristan Bogdanov was born in Denver, Colorado. He was the youngest son of Nick and Elisabeth Bogdanov. His older brother Anthony was three years his senior.

Tristan was always interested in computers and robotics. When he went to college there was really only one place he considered, M.I.T. There he double majored in Electronic and Mechanical Engineering with minors in Computer Science and Robotics. Upon graduation Tristan was immediately hired by the Dominion Corporation and put on a contract for the Department of Defense: the project that would produce the Iron Guard armor, Project Anvil.

At twenty-three Tristan was employed in his dream job, had a beautiful girlfriend and was wealthy beyond his wildest dreams. It was at this point that his life changed forever. Late one night he snuck his girlfriend Dana into the Research and Lab facilities where he worked. He told Dana that he was performing some testing of the battle armor (showing off for his girlfriend Dana, all part of building up to ask her to marry him) when things went horribly wrong. The armor's systems went haywire, the neural feedback sent Tristan into a seizure. When he awoke he was in a private hospital room within the Dominion facilities. He was told that 1) He did an incredible amount of damage to the facility. 2) He was now permanently paralyzed from the waist down. 3) There may have been some brain damage 4) He had killed Dana.

About a week into his treatment and after the shock of what had happened had subsided somewhat, he was visited by Mark Ballie, the then CEO of Dominion. Mark was blunt: as far as the world was concerned, it needed to be as if nothing had happened. They had already staged things to make Dana's death seem like a car accident. Tristian was to be given a rather large amount of money, and given a new life elsewhere, on the condition that he never mention his involvement with the Dominion Corporation, and completely forgot about Project Anvil. (Dominion already knew about the issues with the neural systems but the entire contract would be lost if the DOD knew about issues this late in the project.)

When Tristan got out of the hospital he was confined to a wheelchair, he was moved to Boston and was now working for Rangodyne Industries along the same lines as his work with Dominion. Even as he was just starting to be able to come to terms with what had happened to him and had begun getting settled, he received news that his brother Anthony was dead. It was revealed that Anthony had been the superhero Starburst and had died in combat.

This additional shock started bringing forward the other effects of his accident. His intelligence and memory, as well as his ability to understand systems and patterns had been enhanced, but this also caused issues as he started seeing patterns everywhere. This led him to start investigating various conspiracy theories and to start to believe strongly that vast networks of power did exist in society.

This of course started to isolate him from his coworkers. He was embarrassed by the way people pitied him, and before long decided to put his knowledge to work making a better version of the battle armor, so that he might avenge his brother and be able to walk again and possibly do something about the hidden groups that played with humanity. It took over two years and much of his amassed fortune to complete the armor. When it was done he quit Rangodyne and began fighting crime as Monolith.

The Mark I Monolith armor was a simple proof of concept prototype which Tristan still uses for mobility within his personal labs. Mark II was the first that he used for crime fighting. This was the armor used while Tristan was with the Sentinals. Durring a charity event a a childrens hospital, the inheriant flaw in the neural systems manifested again although the effect was limited this time due to safeguards that he had put into place. The Sentinals asked Tristan to leave due to the press around the incident. Tristan redesigned the neural systems from scratch, identifing and correcting the flaw once for all. This was the creation of the Mark III armor, which was later replaced with the Mark IV with several generations of optimization based off of in feild observations. The Mark II was salvaged for parts. The Mark III is still active but stored.

It didn't take Dominion long to figure out where this armor had come from. However, rather than curtail this new superhero’s activities, they instead decided to watch him and save the knowledge of his origin as possible leverage in the future.

Personality: Tristan is a quiet and thoughtful man, oftentimes can seem to be in his own little world. Tristan is handsome and often does quite well with the women, but cannot abide pity. He will ignore any woman who treats him like a cripple. Monolith is brash and vocal in combat, and often takes dangerous risks. Because the Monolith armor allows him to walk, Tristan uses any excuse to don the armor and become Monolith. Tristan is motivated to make up for the mistakes in his life, and seeks more than anything to avenge his brother's death.

Tristan is a normal without his Mark IV Monolith armor. Without the armor he is unable to walk and can only move with the aid of a wheelchair, or by pulling himself along the floor with his upper body strength. His armor gives him great defense, moderate attack capability, enhanced senses and the ability to walk and fly.

Re: Power Suit examples

OIHID, and also Multiform examples:

War-Man

Here are some OIHID examples:

Pounder

Richochet

As a comparison point here are a few characters that wear Powered Armor bought as a Focus:

Green Knight

Makeshift

Here is a combination Focus + VPP for modular gear:

Major Savage

And here is a character that wears Power Armor built as a Vehicle (the Powered Armor Suit link):

Goodspeed

And here is another character that has no physical form and uses a robotic body as a harness to interact with the normal world:

ERG-9

ERG-9 Suit

Theres a few more power armor type characters here and there on my site, but the above is pretty representative of the various major approaches I think.

Fyredrake perched on the corner of the building scanning the streets for signs of trouble. As he watched his mind drifted back..how long had he been doing this...two months now since... the Enforcers killed his brother. James thought of his career how he had spent his entire working life since graduating college, working for the government he now hated. He had designed many of the newer cybernetic implants the enforcers now used. He used to believe in the Enforcers until that fateful day in the department store. A group of terrorist had taken hostages and the Enforcers were called in. The Enforcers stormed the building and in the ensuing chaos, James' brother jumped one of the gunman and disarmed him. When the Enforcers stormed into the area they opened fire on anyone holding a gun..including Jame's brother. Over the next several months James' thought only of revenge, but had no way to act on it. Then he discovered an ancient history book from the time before the war. He saw pictures of the great heroes of the past...and one picture inspired him. He saw the legendary Iron Man. James built his own suit of armor and began fighting the Enforcers. He was determined to make a difference, to expose the Enforcers for what they were, to restore true freedom even if he had to die trying.

Re: Power Suit examples

I've been doing the power armor thing myself recently and here are some tidbits that I can pass along.

First, you are not supposed to put sensory powers into a Multipower so your GM may complain about that. Personally, I think it is great for power armor and makes a lot of sense, especially if it takes the limitation "costs END" and draws from the suit END reserve.

Second, and far more important, the way you build your power armor will have a huge effect on what happens in the game. OIF Power Armor (-1/2) is how a lot of people tend to build, but if you read through the rules for foci, this has some effects that you may not intend... First, if you get stunned or knocked out, the power armor can be removed fairly quickly by anyone, including your enemies. Second, all foci can be targetted and damaged or destroyed.

Right now, just scanning quickly, the biggest power I see in your battle armor is your speed enhancement at 50 Active Points. That means that your armor has a DEF of 10 (50/5) and that anything that hits it (GM may make that a called shot to vital points on the armor itself or may just say anything that hits you and hence the armor) and does more than 10 points of body will start shutting down systems in the power armor. A multipower is considered a single power for the purposes of this shutting down, so one shot can eat all your forcefields, all your motion, all your weapons or all your sensors.

Alternatives come from the post KillerShrike made just above me. By making the armor a more inherent part of the character either by using OIHID or just buying the powers outright, you can avoid the possibility of those powers being shut down. Remember, just because it sounds like the special effects, it may not be the case that you want the limitation... A limitation that is not limiting is not worth any points so if you take the limitation, expect your GM to do nasty things to you with it.

Re: Power Suit examples

Some very good points Jaxom, but I want to add a couple things here. When I build a character I build based on the concept that I have in my head. Sometime OIHID seems closer then OIF, sometimes not. As I have learned over my years, if I build a power OIF, I know that it can be damaged/stolen and I roleplay with that knowledge.

As to the focus being damaged, its no more of a threat then a power being dispelled, suppress, transformed or any other adjustment to it. If your really worried about it, build in extra defenses.

Last point... is it really appropriate for a suit of armor to modify SPD? I mean, I can justify and accept modification to DEX, but SPD is a toughy. That is one of the few stats that is campaign busting if not watched. Also tends to make a group not like you much if your always SPD +2 or more of them (thats the speedsters job).

Re: Power Suit examples

Last point... is it really appropriate for a suit of armor to modify SPD?

Sure. Only as much as not to overpower the character, like any other FX.

It can by a cybernetic rerouting of reactions systems, and hyping up the body in various ways chemically, enhancing the nervous system so that you just arent more agile, but you act more often.

Re: Power Suit examples

It can also be explained as a combat computer that actually runs a program through the armor so that its a machine throwing the punches, closing to engage, firing a ranged blast at the first analyzed threat, etc.

You can also say that the armor has a neural link so it gets the thoughts and transfers them to actions which are carried out by the servos and myomers in the suit.

Conversely if the suit did not compensate for its own increased bulk and weight, powered armor characters most certainly would get speed penalties and be slower than normals.

Re: Power Suit examples

I'm coming to this thread a bit late but....Some examples of other

folks power armor builds (Iron Man, as an example):

http://www.mactyre.net/scm/deejay/champs/characters/avengers/iron_man.html

Total points: 854

http://www.sysabend.org/champions/gnborh/text/Iron_Man-sb.txt

total points: 833

http://www.sysabend.org/champions/gnborh/text/Iron_Man-ms.txt

Total points: 988

Obviously, these are attempts to generate versions of an existing

character after significant adventuring, etc....But there might be

some ideas in the builds that you might find worthwhile. :)

For a 250 point character who is not precisely power armored but

might have some use as reference here is a version of Robocop:

http://www.sysabend.org/champions/gnborh/text/RoboCop-mi.txt

Total points: 250

Likewise, here is a version of Robotman:

http://www.sysabend.org/champions/gnborh/text/Robotman-ks.txt

Total points: 250

And some generic 'Grond Stomper' battle armor:

http://www.patric.net/morpheus/cast/hero/grond.html

(The character sheet is in stripped/simplified format and I can't

seem to calculate the actual costs right now....sorry) :o

Hopefully, these might be usefull to you for getting a feel for

things.....

A focus that provides defenses has the DEF of whatever defense it gives. In the case of the Monolith armor, that would be 16/16 PD/ED from the armor and a total of 33/33 PD/ED if the force field is also running.

Also having just re-read the Focus section of the 5ER. You CAN at your discression define the armor as breakable yet durable or unbreakable for no increased cost. (pg 294 5ER). Durable (+0) doubles the defense for purposes of damaging the focus. Unbreakable (+0) is just that, unbreakable. Read pg 294 for a more complete understanding of focus'.
