mvoncannon
Hey, My players have been complaining a bit on my soliloquy for bad guys. Honestly, I suck at them. Threats too. How do you handle this? Examples? I don't think it is my voice or delivery, as much as what I say. I can use the quotes and get a good idea from the character backgrounds, but I tend to get a loss when I have to deviate from that by any significant amount. CrosshairCollie
Re: Soliloquy and threats Furmanisms. Figure out a couple of really good threats, speeches, or turns of phrase that you really like, and use them a lot. Give them a little twist, turn the subject-predicate around, change the words to account for the speech patterns of the villains. For reference, Furmanisms. pinecone
Re: Soliloquy and threats An old MA threat "I'm gonna hit you with so many lefts, you're gonna beg me for a right!"

hfergus
Re: Soliloquy and threats My favorite is "I'me going to rip off your arm and beat you to death with the bloody stump." Oh wait. You said villain? Oops that's a hero's quote (just kidding - or am I?)
Mendou
Re: Soliloquy and threats Sometimes the best sort of threat is understatement. For instance, answering a hero's defiance with a simple "Really." before revealing he's mind-controlled the hero's DNPC, who is moving in for the kill. If the villain's a bit more bombastic in nature, I recommend tracking down a bunch of old comics written by Stan Lee. He's very good at mixing alliteration ("By the hoary hosts of Hoggath!") with eloquence. Or watch any Bond movie with Ernst Stavro Blofeld; they also have a lot of the standard villain speeches. Eventually you'll get the idea, and find yourself rattling off things like "Pathetic worms! Did you feel your puny powers could be any match for my brilliance? None can stand before me, especially not the likes of you! MwahahahahaHAHAHAHA!!!" in no time ^_-

Captain Obvious
Re: Soliloquy and threats When my son is playing with his action figures, a common response to smack talk seems to be "Yeah, right!", although I can't say it would be too impressive coming from most supervillains. A lot depends on the tastes of your players. Players who prefer Iron Age style settings often find Silver Age speeches lame or cheesy. Players who prefer Silver Age speeches often seem to roll their eyes at Iron Age crudeness or bravado, dismissing it as a pathetic attempt to be "kewl" Do you know what sorts of movies they like, and what characters from those movies? ParagonAlpha
Re: Soliloquy and threats After being strapped to a table and a laser activated. James Bond: Do you expect me to talk? Auric Goldfinger: No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die. The greatest villain line ever.
