Re: Qwyjibo is up

He's mentioned in Monster Island and given stats. (giant Firebreathing radioactive ape)

However, his backstory in the book doesn't mention Dr. Moreau at all and sounds more like a creation of the Qualar (sp), but that may be the crisis they mention.

Re: Qwyjibo is up

We're starting to see the divergence of the MMO and Champions Universe story lines into similar but separate worlds.

Qwyjibo is mentioned as one of the captured monsters created by the Qularr during their first invasion (Monster Island p8). In the CU he has nothing to do with Dr. Moreau.

But it makes for nice MMO crossover story.

Re: Qwyjibo is up

Well, that tears it then.

He's likely a Cryptic add-on. Maybe they thought ol' Silverback wasn't enough monkey bang for the buck. ;)

And, yeah, that's why I mentioned the Simpsons. That's where the name came from. I guess they couldn't come up with a clever enough riff on King Kong or Mighty Joe Young.

At the time that Monster Island was written, Steve Long was dealing with the material that Cryptic Studios had developed to that point. It's possible that Cryptic hadn't devised a backstory for Qwyjibo at that time.

I'm not convinced we'll see a Cryptic/Hero Champions Universe divergence. I think this is just symptomatic of the transition from the Fifth Edition CU to the new continuity, which has required some compromises to bridge the two. For example, Steve Long deliberately fitted Cryptic's "Shadow Destroyer" into the timeline for Dr. Destroyer from previously-published Champions books so that he could be used with the earlier material, rather than revise the timeline to accomodate SD's much-earlier appearance in the new continuity.

I expect that all future versions of the universe after Sixth Edition and the MMO come out will conform to events laid out by Cryptic.

Re: Qwyjibo is up

*shrug*

I'm not losing any sleep over it. As long as the quality of the writing stays up, I'm cool with it. Having read every book published, I could probably go and start poking continuity holes in the CU before Cryptic came along. There's a lot of material in there to play with.

Besides...

Flaming Monkey.

You expect correctly. ;) Though as I've often stated,

(a) there are many, many aspects of the CU that the MMO will never touch on where we can do whatever we want, and

(B) so far, at least, Cryptic hasn't cared if we want to change something for the RPG from the way it is in the MMO (in fact in some cases, such as maps of instances, they require it).

So nothin' to worry about, methinks. ;)

The Shadow Destroyer example LL raises is a good one. In the 6E CU continuity, Shadow Destroyer will be the one who "returns" in 2002, not "real" Dr. D.

And yes, Qwyjibo is their creation, not something Darren or I ever came up with. If they gave him a connection to Dr. Moreau, that post-dates what was known or devised when I was writing Monster Island, but it's an easy enough change. :hex:

Re: Qwyjibo is up

Someone better versed in Champions lore can chime in; I certainly've never heard of him' date=' except to recognize the name as an old [i']Simpsons[/i] joke. :P

Yep, Bart and Homer playing scrabble... I still use that word from time to time and I haven't watched the Simpsons in years.
