Xavier destroyed his mind, leaving him a vegetable. Attracted to the strange temple, Xavier discovered the Ruby of Cyttorak, which transformed him into a being with the physical might to match his mental abilities. Freed of his crippling injury, and drunk with power, Charles Xavier decided that an Overman such as he had become had the qualifications and the right to rule the world.

Peter Parker: After his beloved Uncle Ben was murdered by a robber, Peter applied his extensive (albeit still rudimentary) skill as an inventor to create a suit of reinforced armor. Now supported by the proceeds of his numerous household and medical patents, he goes out and fights crime as the Knight of Justice.

Susan Storm: Instead of meeting Reed Richards and flying off into space, Susan went on a trip to Norway to explore the lands of her ancestors. There she encountered an alien incursion and fleeing into a cave pursued by one of them stumbled across an inscribed hammer. Trapped and cowering as the alien advanced on her, something awakened in her heart and she seized the hammer... Eventually she learned that she could become "Thunder" because she was a mortal descendant of the god, hence the name. Tragically, her brother became one of her greatest foes when he first stole the hammer, and then when he was adjudged unworthy it slipped from his hand and he went on to become Firestorm, thanks to an encounter with one Phineas T. Horton.

I guess it would have to be a suit of low end power armour to make up for him being a wimp... Still I like the idea.

An old issue of Marvel Comics' "What If..." had Jane Foster find the hammer and become "Thordis," which she said was the name of a Scandinavian girl she used to know.

Yes' date=' but I preferred for Sue Storm to become an ersatz goddess of thunder and I didn't really like the name "Thordis". I would have gone with the name of Thor's actual daughter, except that her name was Thrud.[/quote']

Which is suddenly kind of scary for me. In 'White Dwarf' magazine (way back when it wasn't just a GW product catalogue), there used to be a comic strip called 'Thrud The Barbarian' - all about a stereotypical (male) barbarian.

Re: Alternate Marvel Universe

See I've been mulling over a different take on Peter Parker so here goes.

Peter Parker: Parker was still a skinny frail boy got bit by a irradiated spider. He didn't get the spider stats but he did get the Danger Sense. With this it always seemed he was one step ahead whenever bullies were coming his way. As skinny kids tend to do, he started to put on weight, and seeking to bring some pay back to all the teasing he got, he set out to get into shape and eventually was able to take out Flash Thompson in a wrestling match to become team captain. It was at this point, while flush with his victory, that his Uncle Ben told him he was disappointed in him. "You're smarter than this Peter. Use your gifts, but use them to help people and be uplifting." Peter nodded and set out to do just that. He spent the rest of his senior year working with Flash to bring the wrestling title to the school while also graduating as Valedictorian. He set out to college and came up with some brilliant ideas while staying heavily involved in sports when fate finally got involved. His Aunt and Uncle were both killed in a bombing by Hydra, and while at the funeral he was approached by Nick Fury. Fury told Peter he'd had an eye on him for a while and needed Peter to head a covert team to go after Hydra on their level. He became "Renaissance" and along with the others on the team he set out to run a clandestine war against Hydra.

I'm picturing something much more long the lines of Batman. Highly trained and lots of gadgets that he invented. He heavily relies on the Danger Sense and has a defensive martial arts style that no one seems to be able to keep up with.

Benjamin Grimm, instead of becoming the pilot for an expedition into space, went on a spelunking expedition which discovered an underground world where he had the good fortune to stumble into rescuing Kala, the queen of one of the underworld realms from one of her rivals. He made quite a career out of queen rescuing and tempestuous romance. She declared him her champion, and armed and armoured him with her post-Atlantean technology, but he often found himself stripped down and relying his fists and his guts. Still when surface world heros came down, he ended up getting "Champion" as a pseudonym, even after he finally married Kala and was crowned her consort.

Henry Pym, instead of letting his wife go off and get herself deaded in a remarkably stupid trip to Communist Hungary, persuaded Maria to pick another site for their honeymoon. Years later, he sacrificed his life to save his wife from a rampaging alien menace, and Maria Pym and Janet Van Dyne (whose father was also killed) used his discoveries to give themselves powers to fight as Insectra and Ant-Girl.

Anthony Masters was the top Drill instructor at East Point. As he watched the young students he trained, go off and die for his country, he was frustrated. That was something he could not do, due to his heart condition. When an experimental Heart replacement program needed a test subject, Tony answered the call. Now with a superhuman heart, and a desire to serve his country, Tony Masters serves as TASK MASTER, Americas best.

A radioactive octopus?
A little more like (with a quick consult on Doc Ock's Wikipedia entry):

Otto Octavius was the man bitten by the radioactive (and/or genetically engineered) spider, and who developed massive strength and the ability to stick to walls. He initially used his powers to rescue his wife, Mary Alice, from criminals who had kidnapped her as leverage to obtain his scientific secrets. Later, at her urging, he adopted a superhero persona, The Spider, building a special harness to give himself four extra limbs in true arachnid fashion.

Dr. Bruce Banner and his scientific partner & girlfriend, Dr. Betty Ross elect to conduct radiation experiments in space. The two world renowned scientist bring along their two lab assistance. Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. Their pilot for the mission is Lt. Col John Jameson.

When cosmic rays hit the shuttle and cause the radiation experiments to go awry the 5 astronauts are transformed into the Fantastic Five.

Dr. Fantastic (Banner)

Ms. Mirage (Ross)

Living Lightning (Parker)

Multi Girl (Stacy)

&

Ironclad (Jameson)

Re: Alternate Marvel Universe

Lacking a Xavier's Academy and never having found the optometrist who would bizarrely create a pair of glasses with ruby quartz lenses (I mean really, how likely was that?), Scott Summers chose the only method which he discovered would work to keep from getting his headaches, avoiding any contact with sunlight. The result was years of isolation. His obviously mutant eyes, and inability to go out in the day, rendered him isolated, made it nearly impossible to support himself and soured his disposition. Eventually he turned to crime, committing burglaries to support himself. His mutant energy absorption power had responded a lifestyle which denied it by becoming more sensitive, allowing his eyes to soak up the slightest light to let him see in the dark, and feel electromagnetic flows, sensing the electric currents of alarm systems. He could even, at the cost of a headache afterwards, absorb the energy around him, shutting down powered machinery and creating a zone of darkness he would use to escape capture. Eventually they called him "Midnight".

Re: Alternate Marvel Universe

Matt Murdock's father was desperate to do something for and with his son. Shortly after the accident that cost Matt his sight he needed to do something to try to cheer his son up, so he decided to take Matt to the circus that was in town. Never minding that the boy wouldn't be able to see any of it, it was at least something to do and get them out of the house. What he didn't know is that one of the carnies would see a blind Matt jump out of the way of a juggling clown who wasn't paying attention. The word spread back stage fairly fast and the old trick shot archer stepped up, "I need to see this boy." The ring master offered to show the blind boy and his father around back stage and Matt met the archer. It took a little bit, but they ended up getting a bow into the boys hands. After one shot that was just on the inside edge of the bulls eye, the old archer nodded proudly to himself. The archer knew it would take some work but the blind boy somehow was a natural with a bow.

Time would pass and eventually a dark new hunter would begin to work in Hell's Kitchen. Blind Justice would now be the name of the game. I picture something like a more ranger-esk version of Green Arrow but in the deep red that Murdock is known for.
