Final Destination

BIt finally happened. Live in the mask, die in the mask. Maybe it was stopping some megalomaniacal world beater's latest rampage, maybe some thug with a gun got lucky or someone had to fly that megaweapon out of over the ocean to explode harmlessly. However it went down...

Your character died.

What are the repercussions? Who do they leave behind and how would they mourn? Does the world grieve for a fallen hero or does only their team know (and/or care)?

And perhaps most importantly....

What will their "[insert character name here] Reborn!" story arc look like? Because only real Jobbers stay dead :)

Re: Final Destination

Shadow Hawk being a genetically engineered superhuman who works for a mysterious government agency, only his 'team' would know. Only his clone-brother, War Hawk would be notified.

His reborn arc... his organization would keep his survival secret, even from his team mates, in order to surprise the nation's enemies. Master of stealth that he is, the first clues would be dead snipers, plans to enemy installations in the team's meeting room, and such... until the big reveal, where he'd reveal his new, improved combat suit!

Re: Final Destination

Landslide is just starting out and hasn't even met her team right now, but It is save to asume that her parrents and friends at home would be hit (she has a public ID).

Her reborn arc:

1. Reborn on the spot:

She was created when a extradimensional critter was killed and it's final survival mechanism kicked in: The blood fused with the closest living being (wich happend to be Manuela Meier, who became Landslide after that). It is very possible that this would happen when she is killed to. How much of her and the poor affected person personality would come out in the resulting person is a different question.

If it is mostly her's (so who ever got assimilated is lost), she would be devastated since she effectively killed somebody.

If it is mostly the other person, that person is in for a hell of a adjustment phase. But certainly has superhero potential.

2. Out of sight, out of mind:

Asuming a "should be dead, but body never found" story she will have most likely survived. She was created when a extradimensional, ultra-survivalist critter was killed and so her body is the ultimate survivor. Loosing an Arm or Leg means nothing and surviving on the ground of the ocean is no problem - asuming she finds a source of food and/or air. If not, perhaps her body spontaniously adopts to survive totally without it (it has some limited magic manipulation abilites so everything is possible).

Then she might need some time to walk back to the surface, unless somebody (lemurians or other sea-dwellers) pick her up (she can't swim at all).

Re: Final Destination

Orion is a vigilante, so very few would miss his passing. No family left, and no social life to speak of. He has an apprentice he is training (to be a hero, not a vigilante), but she doesn't know his secret. Genocide would be hopeful, and have a few restrained celebrations, but won't really believe he's really dead, even if they were the ones responsible. Law enforcement would not believe he is gone, and would keep looking for him.

He's already died twice in combat, so the rebirth arc is pretty clear. After being gone for a couple months, he reforms with somewhat altered powers. He may be more or less powerful, but his drive to be a vigilante is dampened, and he is momentarily at peace with himself. That won't last though, and sooner or later he will start hunting down criminals. With every rebirth he feels less of a need to personally and publicly carry out justice, and is slowly turning into an investigator that anonymously provides tips to the authorities and other heroes.

Re: Final Destination

Keeneye would be missed by his numerous ex-girlfriends, but not the Board of Directors of MetroCom. He's not popular with the public, so no one would miss his costumed persona until the crime rate skyrocketed.

His rebirth arc would probably involve a villain creating a clone/quantum duplicate/replica of him for some evil plan, which then goes rogue and turns to superheroing.

Varn is actually vaguely popular, so he would at least get a memorial service.

At that memorial service, he would appear out of nowhere and warn of some dimensional menace that is approaching.

Re: Final Destination

Volt is very popular with the public and most hero groups (and even some villians), so there would grieving and a cermony. He leaves a daughter, son-in law and a grandson. (he's 67 and a widower) Rebirth... He's electrical based, and got his powers when a chemical and ligntning combined. Think re-animation ala Frankenstein's monster. But hopefully still heroic.

Olorin is also very popular, so there would be greiving and a ceremony. He has no family in this universe. As to re-birth ... He already does not age. When asked if he can die he says "I don't know. I haven't died yet. But I"ve come close, so I think I can." If he finds he cannot die and just comes back - he'll be angry first then depressed. Outliving everyone he's ever know has gotten to him before. His biggest fear is outliving everyone. He'd be in crisis for some time, but it may not be obvious at first.

Black Tiger - few others than his team will miss him. He has a sister, but she has no heard from him in years. She even wonders if he's alive, and really does not care. Re-birth - Probably not, but if so, it had to be a part of his super-soldier treatment. Or something really weird.

Leaman - Missed mainly by team and other heroes. A waitress in his favorite diner would miss his secret ID. He has brothers and sisters (8 in the family) but they are not too close. Re-birth - His powers come from an earth magic based amulet. Being buried int the earth just might kick something in, and back he comes. And as a good Catholic boy, he'd be very disturbed.

Futurian - "Whoaaaa. I was dead? Wow, my nanites must be exhausted! They've worked overtime. By the way, got any food? I'm famished." Yes, he has self-repair nanites. But they are not supposed to bring him back from the dead. Note: not supposed to . His teamates, some heros and others will miss him .... since he can be amusing to watch. No relative here that would miss him. Just ancestors.

Re: Final Destination

Mr. Blackwings would stand back up after a few hours, dust himself off and get back to work. He's already died three times in game so far, so as long as the gods aren't done with him, they'll put him back to work. ( Regenerate with Resurrection adder )

Arc Angel is mourned by his team mates, his bros, and the local populace. He was a fairly popular hero in a local team. His 'Arc Angel Reborn!' story would involve his research assistant finding his notes and spare equipment and taking up the mantle as "Lady Angel".

Mother Superior is mourned by her husband and five children. The world doesn't know about supers at all, and the team works for a shadowey government organization. In the 'Reborn!' arc, it will turn out she was actually shunted into another universe, finds a way to send a message to the team and they get her free.

Re: Final Destination

Raven would be mourned by no one, really. Kate Sutherland (Raven's civilian persona) would be mourned by her father, and her friends--and the handful of honest people to be found in the Hudson City D.A.'s office. (By the same token, others in the D.A.'s office would be popping champagne corks....)

The rebirth scenario would involve Raven's reappearance as if she'd never been gone--but she'd be the alter ego of some other ordinary person.

The Black Knight would be missed by his teammates, and by lots of drinking buddies and many, many women. On the other hand, they'd all agree that he went just the way he always wanted to go. 'Orribly.

His rebirth would involve the words, "I was only MOSTLY dead!" (Given that the Black Knight's whole schtick is that he can suffer horrendous amounts of damage and get right back up, only something drastic like a major explosion would be likely to stop him anyhow...and then he'll just dig his way out of the rubble. Eventually.)

Iron Maiden would be missed by her teammates (the Guardians), by the couple with whom she shares a three-sided relationship, numerous friends, and (though they wouldn't know it, since she has a secret identity) a great many swinging acquaintances.

Her rebirth scenario would involve someone new, someone unconnected to Leah, taking up the name and identity to carry on the legacy.

Re: Final Destination

Nightwatch is a Texas Ranger who fully expects to make a famous last stand for some worthy cause. As far as he's concerned, it's built into being Texan. Assuming his body is found, he's requested to be buried under a poplar tree. So far no one has asked him why although he has posed it as a riddle Agent Belle, who he is trying to court. He might be mourned by his teammates (or they might not be able to hold focus for that long; they're sort of ADHD). He would probably be honored by the Rangers.

As for his rebirth arc. He would probably stay dead until some desperate soul getting ready to face down a terrible evil picked up his badge.

Re: Final Destination

Badger-orphaned. No family. Probably little mourned (maybe a couple of team members, an odd citizen here and there). Given the fact he was a pardoned villain, kind of gets in the way of any like towards him. Since, being pardoned he hasnt exactly made any PR moves to endear himself.

Frosty Bob- Kind of immortal. So the resurrection of the character should be easy. But, come one if he died, the locals are now in living in a large smoking crater.

Re: Final Destination

Brother Polonius : Well, despite his unbelievable luck so far, some kind of horrible death, probably because he didn't stay out of sight during a running battle with Orks, seems inevitable. Of course, if there's an audience he'd also have to juggle the need to impress the human mob with a martyr's death. Hopefully, if the death is spectacular enough, he'd urge his followers on to greater acts of xenocide, and end up canonised. But coming back from the dead would seem unlikely - and given where souls go in the 40K universe, I dread to think what might come back in his place...

ROVER : I expect his teammates in the Millenium Sentinels would be sorry if he was irreparably damaged, and his brother SPOT would be at something of a loss without a mobile counterpart, but his self-repair protocols are quite adaptable. Indeed, if the pieces get boxed up and left on a shelf somewhere it's possible he might, after some months, reemerge after incorporating all the other technology in the cupboard with him.

Vitus : Did get killed once. Caught in a crossfire between his teammates and snake cultists, Polymorphed into a snake, and accidentally chain-lightninged. Not a pleasant experience for him. Another colleague, killed in the same fight, appealed to the divine authorities that Vitus had an unfulfilled destiny on Aura, and begged that he be returned to life. The surviving party members and a movadic Deva pulled a bunch of strings and brought him back, and Vitus went on to be the only survivor in a number of subsequent battles, his colleagues dying around him. Something that, privately, he finds deeply depressing, and hasn't helped his mental stability.

Thank you for adding that depth to Vitus. It's nice to know he's not quite the 100% SOB he comes across as. Might be 99.5%, but still.

Garrett - super soldier experiment from 20 years ago. He recently killed the only other surviving subject (he and Marshall had a great Wolverine/Sabertooth feud going). He would be mourned by all the supers he's trained (except those who went rogue) and the current team he's mentoring. No family except his crew. Garrett's Return would involve the healing factor going above and beyond the call of duty. He would then have to determine why he was reborn and not the other subjects. And if Garrett returns, what about Marshall?

Bolt - mourned by teammates and family. They know who he is and he keeps in contact with them. Rebirth would likely involve the fact that his girlfriend has a powerset resembling vampire lore. Maybe that love bite had repercussions. As he is deeply religious, if his rebirth added vampiric traits to his powerset, he would be deeply disturbed. Which means that's probably what would happen.

It's one of the reason he IS such an arsehole, or at least acts like one - his friends keep dying - therefore, don't make any more friends....

Re: Final Destination

Economaster would be missed. Few spirit totems are as active in the world as she is, and the immediate negative effects on many markets in the world economy would be huge. A new Economaster would be chosen by the spirits fairly quickly, but whether or not she would return as a superhero is up to the new persona, the spirits, and (if this is a real world scenario) how good her comic-sales have been recently. Could easily return as a villain as well.

The Golem would be missed by a small few, but largely the world would cheer at being rid of 'the monster'. Still, he is VERY hard to put down permanently... a return is very likely. Stopping its 'killer' would not be important, unless he was some larger threat and by fighting (and dying!) to him/her/them the Golem had knowledge to stop them that others did not possess.
